Fat people even more likely to be affected by COVID than previously thought

UK government scientists are urgently investigating whether people living with obesity may be disproportionately affected by the coronavirus, after emerging data from intensive care units suggested a stronger link than previously thought.

New data from the UK’s Intensive Care National Audit and Research Centre, which has been presented to ministers and SAGE scientists, has found that the proportion of severely obese patients in ICUs is twice the proportion in the general population.

Ministers have become increasingly alarmed by data coming out of Britain’s intensive care units, with some members of the government suggesting obesity may end up being a factor in the UK’s higher death toll.

The UK is currently projected to have the highest number of coronavirus deaths in Europe. Around 1 in 4 UK adults are obese. In 2018, the WHO found that the UK had the third highest obesity rate in Europe, behind only Malta and Turkey.

You can point , obfuscate fudge and detract as much as you fucking like. The fact is poorer people did not bring the virus into the UK.

Shifting the blame wont work this time.

QuixoticQuokka · 02/05/2020 17:49

Where do they get fresh vegetables and meat if they're reliant on food banks?
Tinned sweetcorn, peas, tomatoes, mushrooms. Tinned chickpeas and beans are both vegetables and a protein source. Tinned tuna. It doesn't have to be fresh.

I’m on anti depressants that cause greater retention of fats or something (mirtazapine)

And this is something a lot of posters on this thread seem very happy to disregard - some medications cause weight gain/retention. I'm in this position myself.

The fact that some people posting on here genuinely seem to think no one would be fat if they all just went for a walk and ate a fucking apple. Sheesh.

lesbihonest · 02/05/2020 17:50

Carter thank you ... after reading all this I’ve been sitting floods of years feeling a thousand times more shit about myself than yesterday ... your post has really, really helped me . Thank you Flowers - and to the doctor that posted as well Flowers

What are you on?! Who has said they did?

Sodamncold · 02/05/2020 17:58

* Sod well I'm sure living on gruel will make them as happy as many if the self starving self hating 'educated' wealthy women I know* so these slim educated wealthy women open up to you about their “self-hatred” and eating disorder do they? Grin

Querlouse · 02/05/2020 17:59

carter your post is really inspiri ng.

Nameandgamechange123 · 02/05/2020 17:59

@CallmeAngelina brilliant comment!

ToffeeYoghurt · 02/05/2020 18:00

Variety is also important for a healthy balanced diet. Also tinned veg, whilst better than nothing, isn't generally as good. Some of the nutrients are lost (unlike with frozen) and the cheapest brands especially contain salt.

HeIenaDove · 02/05/2020 18:00

So to summerize

Both DH and i should start smoking again. I gave up in 2005 He in 2006.

I should put some weight back on.

And DH needs oestrogen. I may have some old Pills somewhere.

Except lugging more tins home means going out on more shopping trips when being told to stay home. Because you can only carry so much when not having a car.

lesbihonest · 02/05/2020 18:05

bringin those tablets are horrendous , I can’t come off them just now (tried at the end of March , not a good idea) but they are bloody awful for side effects . I’ve lost weight somehow but have to watch every single mouthful - can’t eat much at all without gaining again . GP is phoning 4 weekly to get a weight and waist measurement ...

Plus they feel like diazepam so keep you very drowsy all day - last thing you want to do is a Joe Wicks workout !

ToffeeYoghurt · 02/05/2020 18:06

I love that Helena. Imagine that being the new health advice!

I'm off for a walk. Because I'm lucky enough to be able to. Unlike the many housebound with limited mobility or other issues making that hard to do.

pocketem · 02/05/2020 18:14

Anyone who has a good memory and can memorize facts can pass an exam.
That's not how exams work

Good exercise though. Might help you shift a few calories.

Literally nobody said this. Weak strawman argument

Oh you now want us to go out MORE Well i will make sure those on the main thread are aware of this.

So what do you propose i say when i inevitably get my collar felt.

Or my nosy arse neighbour puts photos of me on social media.

Xenia · 02/05/2020 18:23

If you want to be a healthy weight just eat a lot less eg twice a day not more and only drink tap water.

It is really not fair no the NHS and nurses to keep that massive burden on them caused by obesity and resulting diabetes.

Itsjustmee · 02/05/2020 18:24

The New NHS Slogan

Start Smoking
Eating Less
Save The NHS

QuixoticQuokka · 02/05/2020 18:25

I thought foodbanks were delivering at the moment? I might be wrong though. If you are buying your own food then you can buy fresh. Bananas, apples, carrots, onions and so on are all cheap, variety is limited on a low budget (I know, I've lived it), but you can still eat healthy food.

HeIenaDove · 02/05/2020 18:26

Next week im off out as MANY times as possibly can.

Fuck the lockdown .

IM DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

grumpyorange · 02/05/2020 18:27

@pocketem That's not how exams work

When did you last sit exams - that's exactly how they work except for maybe art or drama

HeIenaDove · 02/05/2020 18:27

I dont need a foodbank Are you suggesting i take help i dont need.

TheoneandObi · 02/05/2020 18:30

@Mikki2019
Love that slogan! It should def be adopted.
