Friend’s partner is out and about a she likes, visiting family and hanging out with his mates (much to her dismay)
Neighbours are still visiting their parents
In-laws (in a different country but still with lockdown) all visiting each other

I keep hearing story after story of people I know or friends of friends who just aren’t observing any of the lockdown rules and it makes me feel what’s the point??
I’m not about to start flouting the rules myself, of course, but there is a part of me that thinks why the hell am I missing out on seeing friends and family when nearly everyone I know seems to be carrying on as normal??

No, I think it's confirmation bias. Add up the number of people you know to be violating lockdown versus the number you don't. Which is greater?

I know it’s frustrating, but all the modelling accounts for a proportion of the population not complying. Keep doing what you’re doing.

I feel that way but I also know that the data does not support that feeling

I think you’re absolutely right.

And thank you Mummagiles

How many times is this thread going go to be reposted?

The overwhelming majority of people are sticking to this. People are allowed to go work and go out for exercise.

We do t have to be hiding behind the sofa in the front room Hmm

I know of a few people doing things they shouldn't be - driving miles to the countryside to walk around, having hairdressers round, going to friends' houses, going out numerous times a day to do things that don't seem that important like buy some tarragon because they ran out. I've seen a few dog walkers stop and stand right next to each other talking because their dogs are sniffing each other and a lot of groups of youngish people congregating on benches.
Most people I know are very worried and cautious though

As many times as people want it to be seeing as, you know, this is a public forum and all.
I can’t beat forum police. Smacks of arrogance.

And when in my post did I say I expected people to be hiding behind their sofa?

Yes my family and I and the dc's closest friends are all sticking to it. They have not seen friends in 7 weeks but my teenagers classmates are all meeting upland sharing photos on social media. My friend who is extremely health stressed, meets her friends everyday 9but it's outside so it's fine apparently!) Her decade also hanging out with friends daily but again: it's x and y so it's fine too.

I don't mind so much: each to their own. The idea of policing my neighbours is depressing (even more so than lockdown!) But it bothers my dc more. They think what is the point if so many are ignoring restrictions. It'll last forever because of their inability to stick to rules and "they're having fun while im stuck at home". There have been tears over this.

Everyone on our street except us and next door are having regular, multiple visitors (not dropping anything off) and we (and next door) are the only under 60s on the street.

We’ve had multiple complaints about our tenant having garden parties.

We’ve seen more and more groups of Lycra clad cyclists on the road.

So yes, it feels like we (and our family and close friends) are the only people bothering to stick to the rules.

I think people here are largely sticking by the rules but making tweaks e.g. going out for walks past friends' houses and talking for a few minutes from the end of the garden. This is probably a good indicator of what will come next - gradually releasing people from complete household isolation, mixing in small groups socially distanced.

Definitely not. I know of a couple of people who have slightly bent the rules, but other than that, everyone I know is following them, and judging from what I can see from behind the curtain, so are my neighbours and the rest of the village.

"The only people I have noticed that appear to be flouting the rules are retired couple in their 70s who don't seem to have modified their behaviour at all. They still go out and have family visiting every day who stay for a couple of hours or so."

We love to have a dig at the over 70s here on MN but in the case
of 'having the family visit every day staying for a couple of hours or so' it's 'the family' breaking the rule rather than the Ancient Ones. The poor old Oldies were probably looking forward to a nice rest from these family visits so they could stay in rocking in their chairs and staring aimlessly into space in front of daytime TV.

I wasn't criticising them specifically because they are over 70. That was an aside.

But, I agree, their family is to blame just as much as they are. They shouldn't visit and the Oldies shouldn't open the the door and let them in. My MIL wouldn't.

I think most people are staying indoors. I live in a town with a population greater than 60,000. It's currently so quiet here that I was starting to wonder if the Triffids had taken them all.

When I do step outside it feels like I have gone deaf. There should be a constant drone of traffic and where did all the kids go? I live in a flat and when they are off school they play in the open areas outside. I have seen a couple in the last few weeks, but there ought to be dozens at any one time.

When I have to go out I prefer to avoid passing anyone in the communal hallway and stairs, but that hasn't been a problem. I know there are people in the same block as me as you can hear the occasional door slam, but they are not coming out.

No garden but my window looks down the length of the street and I've seen just a handful of people pass by. Usually alone.
