Future of supply teachers?

Hi, is there any other supply teachers on here?
Been furloughed and waiting for payment but I feel so stressed and can't sleep.

Will there be work for us in September when schools open? Will they accept visitors?
I feel so sick and anxious tonight and i'm not sure why Sad

It may depend on what type of supply you are willing to do. If schools reopen in September I think there will be demand for long term supply. There will be staff shielding, the usual maternity leaves and other long term illnesses, mental health fallout from covid-19 and schools that have either struggled to recruit or chosen to use fixed term contracts where it has not been possible to follow normal recruitment processes. If you only want very short term work and intend to bounce around schools then maybe not so much.

Well, they can't have classes without teachers, so supply teachers will still be needed.

I assume not all teachers will necessarily be going back once schools start to open so I assume there will still be a need for supply.

I am up for anything! I am also applying for jobs but obviously no guarantee,
I am an NQT and I was a short-term supply before. I would have wanted long-term supply more but it never came up sadly,
I think a lot of people are worried about future prospects so at least it's a 'We're all in this together' mentality

I would guess that long term supply might actually be more available than before. Some teachers might be unable to come in due to health conditions, risking family members etc.

@Jen101010

Hi,

Are supply teachers going on UC or down the self employed route? Who is paying you furlough? The agency?

I am supply but have been out of it due to health reasons for last few months. Was due to go back in March.

Kokeshi123 · 29/04/2020 04:22

I would have thought they will need every relatively young/lowish risk teacher they can lay their hands on!

There will probably also be a lot more parents needing Skype tutoring to supplement home learning. My own Skype teacher also does supply, I believe.

LonginesPrime · 29/04/2020 15:23

Plus, when schools do go back, there will be a huge increase in the number of children who can't attend school for medical reasons (because of COVID vulnerability) so the LEAs will need to employ extra 1:1 tutors to cater to them (either over Skype or in their homes).

I do short term supply as I am only available two or three days a week. I had as much work as I could do in the weeks leading up to lockdown. i am hoping that schools will still need this once the children are back on school - I assume cover for illness will still be required.

@angora

Do you mind me asking if you consider yourself able to claim furlough payments? Or UC?
