Face coverings recommended in Scotland, what do we think?

Scotland's First Minister is recommending face coverings are used in enclosed public spaces.
I was at the post office today and both staff members were wearing masks. I felt a bit guilty actually that I wasn't wearing anything and was just breathing all over them so I think I will wear a scarf over my face from now on. Not sure I'm going so far as to make an actual mask yet, I've got an antibacterial buff thing, I'll wear that.

I especially think shop workers and people on public transport should.
They know it transmits more in enclosed places.
1 shop person could be in contact with thousands a day

dancerdog · 28/04/2020 15:45

Any suggestions on home made masks - what material would you use?

AndromedaPerseus · 28/04/2020 15:50

I’ve think they give people a false sense of security. I’ve noticed general members of the public who wear them are less careful about social distancing and hygiene rules.

cloudylemonade13 · 28/04/2020 15:55

What @EachDubh said.

Sturgeon has not made it compulsory, but recommended in enclosed spaces as a way of reigning in transmission from those that are asymptomatic. If you have an issue with that advice - incl. political point scoring - then you really need to give your head a wobble!

Didkdt · 28/04/2020 15:59

Nicola Sturgeon has spent this whole crisis upstaging Westminster at every opportunity which us why people think this is politics over public safety .
She needs to give her head a wobble. No one should be using this for political development

Belindabelle · 28/04/2020 16:01

The Welsh and Northern Irish leaders have made different decisions and announcements with regards to school closures and exercise restrictions, as is their right, and no one blinks an eye. Yet as soon as Scotland’s First Minister makes an announcement it’s regarded as political point scoring.

Tonemeth · 28/04/2020 16:04

Other countries are doing it so it's got fuck all to do with politics.

usernamenotavail · 28/04/2020 16:05

Quite frankly I can't stand the woman. I think she's a complete control freak. She's obsessed with looking like she's doing things differently. Thankfully I don't live in Scotland but my OH does work there (construction industry) and has been off unpaid since 20th March. Massively struggling now after getting nothing but UC which goes nowhere. All construction sites have been forced to close in Scotland minus a few hospitals etc. England sites never had to close, friends in England in this trade are either at work now or have a confirmed date to go back within the next week or 2. Absolutely no mention of this in Scotland even though they are able to distance. Getting increasingly frustrated now and wondering if anyone has any insight or thoughts about when construction sites in Scotland will be allowed to reopen?

usernamenotavail · 28/04/2020 16:06

Oops didn't mean to comment meant to make a post! Sorry 🤦‍♀️

Tonemeth · 28/04/2020 16:07

Letsdrinkgin you realise if the Scottish death toll gets out of control it's on her head?

Why can't she make a decision without it being seen as point scoring? Do you really think the tories give a fuck about anything other than their stocks, shares and popularity scores?

PrimalLass · 28/04/2020 16:09

The only reason she has said this is to go against the goverment. That’s it. She gives no fucks about the safety of the Scots.

Oh do piss off. Do you actually think Boris cares about anyone?

Tonemeth · 28/04/2020 16:10

Out of interest, how many of you are living in scotland. Really, it doesnt matter what you think if you're down south or outwith Scotland. She isn't impacting on you at all.

mathanxiety · 28/04/2020 16:11

Where I live ( midwest US) it will be mandatory to wear a face mask in public from tomorrow.

I have a supply of four masks DS had in his pockets from last autumn when he was volunteering in a local hospital. When these are gone I will make some more. I already made some for DS and his GF.

I have some general guidelines, spare shoelaces, and an old fitted cotton sheet.

BeforeIPutOnMyMakeup · 28/04/2020 16:11

@PineappleDanish The Mayor of London has pointed out due to lots of trains terminating on London he hasn't got the power to give guidance to those commuters.

mathanxiety · 28/04/2020 16:13

usernamenotavail your problem is UC, not Nicola Sturgeon.

In other words, the Tories.

Belindabelle · 28/04/2020 16:20

My family are hardly going out into public places anyway and that will continue. If we do have to go into shops or take transport we will use a buff or a scarf to cover our face and nose. Living in Scotland where it can be sub zero 6 months of the year we have plenty of these items lying about. DH has some masks with removable washable filters that he uses for diy, he may decide to use them. No need to buy or make anything.

LabStaff · 28/04/2020 16:28

I wore a homemade mask to the supermarket today. I put it on and took it off properly, I did not touch the mask or my face while I was wearing it, and I maintained distance from other people.

I don't understand why some people are so vehemently against masks - we're literally wearing them to protect other people.

diddl · 28/04/2020 16:32

Masks needed for us from tomorrow on public transport & when in shops.

I'm making a couple but will probably stick to dog walking duties for the foreseeable!

There are some no sew ones for anyone wanting to make but not learn how to sew.

StoorieHoose · 28/04/2020 16:34

I wonder if there would have been a thread about this if the leader of NI and Wales had recommended the use of face masks

StoorieHoose · 28/04/2020 16:34

Or Wales

Tonemeth · 28/04/2020 16:37

Exactly stoorie.

rookiemere · 28/04/2020 16:37

Makes sense and not as a supporter of Scottish Independence. If wearing masks means we get back to some vague sense of normality sooner rather than later- bring it on.

I've ordered some online - not medical grade but enough to stop cough getting through. To be honest I think I've had it already so I don't think it will do much for me, but like ai say if it moves us forward then great. I'm sure it is being discussed by UK government as well

YogaLite · 28/04/2020 16:42

I agree with Nicola.
I think we should throw anything and everything as a population to reduce risks not waffle on about politics and curtailment of personal freedoms.

Only those who are not personally affected would object.

palacegirl77 · 28/04/2020 16:46

So do people think that she is doing this for any other reason other than keeping Scots safe? If Boris does it people will be all over it! Good on her. I'm in England and have a mask which has a filter inside. It's made to size and comfortable. If it stops me spreading germs great, if it stops me catching them even better. If it is 1 percent better then I'm all for it. Plus mine looks cool and I like pretending I'm a Russian spy when I'm in Tesco's.

YogaLite · 28/04/2020 16:54

I think we all need to take some responsibility individually with regards to prevention whilst waiting for researchers cracking the treatment.
