Is this something to worry about? Does anyone have any more information? What I can find online seems really vague and I don't want to worry unnecessarily but I thought kids were much less affected.

Define rare. We've seen 40 cases so far severe enough to require hospitalisation while in complete lockdown with schools closed. What does that look like when they open?

Barbie222 · 08/05/2020 19:28

It's an emerging picture but I'm definitely more concerned than when this thread started and we were talking about smaller numbers. Agree with a pp that the ethnicity information is another reason for us to be more concerned, not less, in the UK let's stop othering shall we

woodpidgeons · 08/05/2020 19:38

The reason they are raising the alert is because even with lockdown we have 40 kids showing very alarming symptoms in a new syndrome that is fairly severe. The big question is what happens when they go back to school. Not one doctor thinks this isn't related to covid-19

This exactly. Note the even with lockdown. Also the 40 cases are only in London, there are more across the UK.

woodpidgeons · 08/05/2020 19:43

Also reported in Italy, Spain, France and the US

Sunshinegirl82 · 08/05/2020 19:49

The last I read there were fewer than 20 children affected in the U.K.? Do you have a source for the increased numbers?

The Kawasaki disease charity released this statement which I felt was quite reassuring.

www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/children-hyper-inflammatory-disease-coronavirus-a4434636.html

This says there are 40 in London.

The original reports said there were other cases across the UK, and there is at least one in Aberdeen.

woodpidgeons · 08/05/2020 20:38

Actually it states there are more than 40

Alex50 · 08/05/2020 20:53

I heard it was mainly children 0 to 5 year olds, were effected by this disease, not sure if that’s true as there is a 14 year old on the link? Does anyone know what age this mainly affects?

Keepdistance · 08/05/2020 21:14

I guess usually it might be under 5 because usually you would catch a coronavirus (or other virus) by 5yo. Obviously with this being new any age could catch it.

Alex50 · 08/05/2020 21:19

I have just found this on the NHS website:

Kawasaki disease is a condition that mainly affects children under the age of 5. It's also known as mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome.

Does anyone know what the ages were for the 40 children in the article?

Barbie222 · 08/05/2020 21:29

@Alex50 I think they are describing it as similar to Kawasaki rather than confirming it as Kawasaki. The symptoms are similar.

Alex50 · 08/05/2020 21:32

That’s why i’m wondering what the age of the majority of the 40 children are?

historyrocks · 08/05/2020 21:34

My niece had this about 2 years ago. I’d never heard about it. It took a while for doctors to realise what it was as it’s generally rare. She was incredibly poorly and in hospital with it. Still at higher risk of cardiac problems.

Alex50 · 09/05/2020 06:51

In Kawasaki it mainly effects boys, is it the same with this?
