If I take a voucher from holiday company and they go bust do I lose my money?

We've booked a camping holiday in France at half term which now can't go ahead.
The company are offering a voucher worth 120% of the cost to use later this year or next year.
We will want to go again next year but I'm worried that if we take the voucher and the company goes bust we will lose our money.
I'm not sure if by taking the voucher we are still covered by the credit card company that we originally booked with?
Is it safer to get a refund and then book again for next year using our credit card?
I don't want to see the company go under as they've treated us well for a number of years ... but also don't want to lose my money!

Yes unfortunately.

I wouldn't take a voucher from anyone at the moment.

Yes.

Think it it is abta/atol protected.

HeadPotato · 27/04/2020 16:20

ok, so the original protection you get from a credit card company doesn't apply if you take a voucher.
I guess it's safer then to get a refund and book again using CC.

The company is covered by ABTA.

Any other thoughts?

I wouldn't take a voucher. Was in a similar situation with Hoseasons and have insisted on a refund.

If this is tui I'm sure their vouchers are covered. It said that in the email I think.

loobylou10 · 27/04/2020 18:07

But we're in the same position as you and I want my money back - rather in my account than theirs. (Even with and extra 20%)

MitziK · 27/04/2020 19:13

I'd insist on a refund.

Strangerthingshere · 27/04/2020 19:17

If given the option, I would also insist on a refund.

Check the Abta website and make sure the wording of your voucher is correct. Also check that because they’ve given you an additional 20% doesn’t invalidate the cash value of the credit note. The people saying a definite no are wrong. But you do need to clarify with ABTA.
