Furlough and UC

lifeonaloop · 27/04/2020 00:35

I've had to sign up to universal credit due to being furloughed.
My take home furlough pay is £700. I've just logged into my UC account and they're paying me £270. Is this right?

I have 3 children and rent to pay. In my journal is says my rent is £279. I'm so confused.

It says my pay for this period is £2000

Strange. I would give them a call or make a note on your journal. I would also contact your local council to ask for food help if you need it, and let your landlord know that you can't pay your rent right now but you are trying to get it sorted.

Were you not already getting Universal credit? If your furlough is only £700 then your wage is low and I'd have thought you'd be entitled to the working tax credits part of UC.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 27/04/2020 06:57

Either way, that doesn't sound right to me. My take home pay is usually £730pm, I have one child. I'm still on tax credits but I get about £750pm in top up benefits - that's tax credits, housing benefit and child benefit.

Yea Uc is a bit confusing. It depends on your statement date and when you get paid from work.

For instance if your assessment period runs from 1st-31st March and your next statement date is 1st April. If tou get your salary between this period thsts what is assessed not your future salary.

So what im saying is your assessment period has taken into account your pre-furlough pay ( normal pay before the crisis) and then this your current assessment period will consider the new pay of 700 as you ve not been paid that right?

UC kind of pays you based on previous pay not future pay

Hope it helps

Like pp said it is probably paying you according to your previous paycheque and should be more next month. When you click on the statements what are the basic ones at the top? You should have the standard, rent and support for 2 children. If the amount your rent is incorrect on the statement you need to update this which you can do online.

Double check your reported earnings but sounds as if you've had two pay days in one assessment period. Check whether this is the case.

lifeonaloop · 27/04/2020 11:43

I was on tax credits and switched. It turns out I have had 2 paydays during the period. One was full pay and the other was furlough. I don't get paid for another 4 weeks from work so that money they have paid me has to last the full month.
Wish I hadn't bothered with it now

Sorry to hear, Lifeonaloop. Can you contact your landlord and explain the circumstances? Or borrow some money to tied you over for the month? With this current assessment period, you won't have a payday so you'll get more UC (if I am understanding things right) to follow.

Going forward, you need to figure out which months you may have two paydays and, if possible, prepare for these.

My wage is less than yours but I get £1200 (closer to £1300 now with the additional amount announced recently) UC. That includes personal allowance, rent, and allowance for 2 children.
