What will happen when the extension to lock down ends?

So in around 2 weeks the extension to lock down will be reviewed. What does Everyone think will happen then? Another extension? Or some lifting of measures? I'm really not sure... What I am sure is the country can't keep in lockdown forever! Where I live people appear already to be breaking rules... I've seem a few groups of people today including people who are pretty clearly not related and cross generational groups in the park.

I don't realistically see how an extension will be feasible, or obeyed. Not saying it will be fully lifted, but we need to live with this longterm and further lockdown just seems to be delaying the inevitable. Seems better to give people a bit more freedom, rather than lockdown further and people start taking their own liberties.

We need to live with this virus. Lockdown was for the government to have time to develop a plan, not to stop the virus completely- Which a shocking number of my friends still think.

Sparklingbrook · 25/04/2020 16:13

Everyone will have to do their own risk assessments and carry on.
But that’s happening already.

SunShine682 · 25/04/2020 16:14

When lockdown ends we party Grin

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 25/04/2020 16:16

I don’t see how they can extend it again. The fact is this virus is going no where and we are a while away from a vaccine, the economy can’t survive this for long we need to get people back to work and back to some kind of normal ASAP.

People are already starting to go out, so the government can either relax the rules or have people ignore them 🤷🏻‍♀️

How they will the relax the rules I’m not sure but they are going to have to. Social distancing needs to stay and I think the majority of people now get that but some kind of normal needs to start coming back

Letseatgrandma · 25/04/2020 16:20

I think it will be extended again. The government said at the last review, this one would be in place for ‘at least 3 weeks’ which suggests they want us to be aware it’ll be extended.

Sparklingbrook · 25/04/2020 16:21

Looking at the weather forecast in these parts the weather is on the turn. That might make a difference. Is that supermarket trip where you stand outside in a queue for 20 minutes really worth it in the pouring rain?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 25/04/2020 16:21

I think it will be extended for another 3 weeks, then a gradual relaxation of the restrictions.

Isleepinahedgefund · 25/04/2020 16:22

I think we can expect further lockdown, in line with countries with similar death tolls.

ivfgottostaypositive · 25/04/2020 16:24

It won't be extended. Lots of big companies - B&q, Homebase, a few house builders started back this week - if they can demonstrate 2m social distancing there is no point extending lockdown as they don't exactly sell "essential" items. Working from Home will continue indefinitely for those that can to avoid a rush for public transport.

freddiethegreat · 25/04/2020 16:24

@Sparklingbrook oh drat it, I hadn’t noticed the weather forecast. Ugh. That’s going to be grim, but as you say, it should sort out the essential from the non essential journeys!

Alex50 · 25/04/2020 16:26

I think companies are starting to go back, fish and chip shop near me opened today. My husband works for Aston Martin, they’re are going back on Monday, so are Jaguar/Landrover. They will not officially end lockdown but slowly filter back without causing mass hysteria.

Tootletum · 25/04/2020 16:28

I'm not sure, seems like the govt isn't either. Given that there isn't apparently even any evidence for immunity after infection (today's news on BBC), herd immunity would be a non starter, so we might have to accept the risk of contagion as the new normal. I think face covering, including just cloth, will become mandatory in shops and on public transport, as it now is in most German states. Social distancing will also continue but the lockdown will stop and more shops will open. The issue they have to solve is healthcare PPE, it'll become the new normal to have a higher death rate for the next year. It's sad.

Eeyoresstickhouse · 25/04/2020 16:48

It will be at least another 3 weeks again. Then we may see some relaxing of lockdown. Lockdown cannot be released until schools are able to go back. Millions of parents can't go to work if they have children off school. So it would be silly to expect otherwise.

LilacTree1 · 25/04/2020 17:09

“ I've seem a few groups of people today including people who are pretty clearly not related”

How could you possibly know that?

And it’s household groupings this Stasi crap is based on.

Letseatgrandma · 25/04/2020 17:33

I can’t see schools going back in whole classes which will then have an impact on parents working.

Perhaps that’s the plan-have schools open with reduced numbers/timetables and then a gradual increase in people working where they can.

catsandlavender · 25/04/2020 17:45

I think they’ll extend it for a further fortnight. All the press conferences I’ve seen point to the government not having any plans to relax things any time soon.

Chocolatecakeandpinkcustard · 25/04/2020 17:55

I'm really not sure.

It wouldn't be a total shock to me if they extended it another 3 weeks, but I'm feeling it's more likely that they'll open up more shops. Maybe things like household recycling centres.

We might start to see things slowly relaxed thereafter, but in small stages and monitored carefully.

Chocolatecakeandpinkcustard · 25/04/2020 17:58

The nice weather we've been having does bring people outside, but on the other hand if people can get out for a nice long walk, it does probably stop people doing other things such as visiting people or taking more trips to the shops. Only guessing.

But the government will be having to weigh a lot of things up.

Deelish75 · 25/04/2020 18:37

My local park has been busier over the last few days with larger groups of multi generations congregating. When in the park we walk at the edge of the footpath, a few weeks ago most people walking towards us would move over creating about a 2 metre distance, now people don't seem as diligent, and on Thursday I told a woman she was too close to us and she needed to move over. I don't really know about the supermarkets as we've been getting shopping delivered (DP vulnerable) but I have nipped in a couple of times, last time was the beginning of last week and it seemed all very civil.

If the hospitalisations and deaths don't start falling consistently then I think lockdown will continue but if they do then hopefully they'll relax it. Not sure what relaxing will look like but I do not see the schools going back soon. My DC's school have said they won't be opening until they've had guidance for social distancing.
