DP and I keep wondering why hairdressers would be one of the first to be allowed to open. How could you socially distance and cut hair. It just doesn't make sense.

dementedpixie · 24/04/2020 21:25

Where did you read that? I'd think they'd be one of the later ones to open

The80sweregreat · 24/04/2020 21:29

I heard September. : (

BlueBrian · 24/04/2020 21:30

Well the DT reckons hairdressers could be one of the first businesses to reopen, however the DM says exactly the opposite, so basically neither of them has a clue and are just making stuff up.

When could hairdressers and salons re-open?
With hairdressers likely to be among the first wave of services and shops to re-open, here's what we know so far

Hairdressers 'could stay closed for another SIX MONTHS' even if lockdown is lifted because experts can't find a way to re-open them without risking further spread of coronavirus

happytoday73 · 24/04/2020 21:30

No I think they will be one of the last...

Reallyneeedhelp · 24/04/2020 21:30

In Georgia US they are reopening now. They have no choice it seems either - no money or support offered apparantly.

Thehollyandtheirony · 24/04/2020 21:38

It’s because they are personal services. Booked with names and contact details so easy to trace if someone tests positive. Much easier than trying to find everyone who has been in a certain shop or cafe.
Of course it depends on the authorities getting their act together on testing and contact tracing.

TheSquitz · 24/04/2020 21:42

I can totally understand why hairdressers won't open for months yet, but the way my hsir is going, I'll end up with some kind of weird mullet at this rate 😩

Itsjustmee · 24/04/2020 21:43

I’ve just read the same about Italy Austria and Switzerland
Hairdresser and beauticians may open mid May
I am using the word MAY though
But as it’s a one to one service and you have the persons contact details then it’s easy to trace if necessary

User202004 · 24/04/2020 21:47

God I wish, my husband'a hair is a state 😂 I saw a thing in the sun that said they wouldn't be open for 6 months (so it must be true of course...)

BubblesBuddy · 24/04/2020 21:56

How many will still be in business by then? There will be great difficulty getting appointments as staff will have been made redundant. The small business owner won’t survive doing nothing for 6 months.

Trenisenne · 24/04/2020 22:00

Hairdressers are opening on Monday in Switzerland, together with beauticians and physios and garden centres. I suppose it's the ability to trace and also because hairdressers are often self employed? Same logic does not apply to garden centres - I think people are just going crazy not being able to get to them...

cookingmywaythroughlockdown · 24/04/2020 22:01

The Swiss have good priorities. I'm desperate for a haircut!

TheCountessatHotelCortez · 24/04/2020 22:06

All of the locks hairdressers to me have released statements today saying the 6 month thing is utter balls, it has been suggested but isn’t set in stone. As another poster said how can they survive being closed for 6 months? A lot of them are self employed and not eligible for help, the owners are eligible for loans etc it’s not sustainable and i, for one, will be the first in the door when mine reopens

TheCountessatHotelCortez · 24/04/2020 22:07

Also the press have no idea, last week they were saying amongst the first to open and now saying the last? Just making it up as they go along

Natsel84 · 24/04/2020 22:12

I'm a hairdresser , this is from the nhbf which is the governing body in the hair and beauty world . Please take no notice of the papers .

Hairdressers may be one of the first to re-open???
PuzzledObserver · 24/04/2020 22:20

I’ve just ordered myself a set of hairdressing scissors, I’m reckoning on it being a long time.

Mentounasc · 24/04/2020 22:21

Hairdressers here in Germany are opening on 4 May, I already have an appointment booked for 6 May and I think getting anything for May is now pretty difficult as most slots have gone.
I have no idea if this will work given the conditions imposed:
Appointments only, and presumably fewer customers allowed in at any one time. Small shops opened this week and most only let 3 customers in at one time (depending on their floor space).
Both hairdresser and customer have to wear a mask. That's going to be fun. Cutting hair behind the ears will be a whole new challenge.
You have to have your hair washed, no dry cuts allowed.
So, it's going to be a weird experience I think. I also find it weird to have hairdressers open while cafes are still closed, but apparently German politicians find the thought of straggly hair too unbearable- hairdressers were among the last shops to close a month ago too. Given that this will be my first cut in 2020, I'm quite relieved. I also think it's entirely possible that hairdressers will be closed again for a while if the infection rates go up too much, so I want to grab the chance now.

Frankly, given the high death rate in the UK and the overwhelmed health service, I don't see hairdressers opening any time soon for you Sad

Kordelia · 24/04/2020 22:29

The health service , in my area at least, is far from overwhelmed.

TheCountessatHotelCortez · 24/04/2020 22:33

@Mentounasc nhs is far far far from overwhelmed in my area too and I am frontline nhs staff

sickofPPEtalk · 24/04/2020 22:33

Health service in my area is very much underwhelmed! Not all areas are the same, we have very few cases here.
I can see hairdressers opening in the first wave. There's lots of balance needed but everything will have to start getting back to some normality, albeit new normality.

RunningNinja79 · 24/04/2020 22:44

I might be talking a load of balls, but wasn't going to the hairdresser classed as an essential journey in one of the European countries?

I'm not sure if I imagined this though. Maybe they were open at first then shut down later.

Nat6999 · 24/04/2020 23:00

I hope so, my hair needed colouring & a trim long before lockdown, I'm shocked how grey I am, have been scouring hairdresser's suppliers for stuff to bleach & colour it.

Mascotte · 24/04/2020 23:03

People just won’t accept no hairdressers so they’ll open

VenusOfWillendorf · 24/04/2020 23:07

Yes, hairdressers here in Switzerland due to reopen on Monday. Grin
Reason given was ease of contact tracing and relatively small no of customers per day. There's also the fact that some, especially elderly people, can't wash their own hair.

DIY and gardening shops are due to reopen Monday also. I think this is because many are warehouse style with lots of space and high ceilings. But most likely it was to prevent a riot as people were getting very upset at not being able to plant, in fact the supermarkets had already started to sell seeds again a couple of weeks ago.

Polkadotties · 24/04/2020 23:13

I think it’s quite easy to be safe going to the hairdressers. Staff and clients wear masks and gloves, gowns and towels are one use only then have to be washed, chair sanitised between clients.
