Plasma transfusion

Any medical people who could shed some light on this. I've read a couple of reports this week of really poorly people having a transfusion of plasma from recovered Covid-19 patients, and getting better!

Is it just wishful thinking or could there be something in it?

TIA

They’ve used this type of thing before.

I’m glad it’s working and hopefully more survivors will step forward to help.

It's a common medical practice, and in the US they have been using the technique since the virus struck. It appears to help support some of the worst cases of coronavirus, but it is still too early to be certain. It doesn't do any harm. I believe they are trailing it in Wales - probably elsewhere too. The plasma contains antibodies, and the principle is that the antibodies transfused start fighting back against the virus and help the patient to fight back, providing extra support until their own body learns to fight the virus.
