Riots? Looting? Breakdown of society?

This was confidently predicted by a fairly substantial number of posters on this site. Lots of "you'll see..." type posts, some genuinely frightening theories of how the pandemic would progress and what it would mean for how society would function.

Today it seems people are trickling back to work. I read that a couple of restaurant chains have reopened - Five Guys for example though not sure if that us nationally.

These are genuine questions, do you still expect this to happen? What are your predictions now? Is it too early to tell? Did you genuinely believe it or did you just get caught up in the stress?

There's still time , it would be more likely if we are locked down again as people will be used to being out and about again.
It's very early days yet, and we have it pretty good compared to countries with fewer deaths, hence we have more deaths and will peak somewhere over summer.
We aren't anywhere near the predicted 70k deaths and that was if we took correct measures, which we didn't.
It's not over until the fat lady sings.

@Ohffs66 I am also confused by B &Q reopening. They were always allowed to open being a DOY store but chose to close in order to support the social distancing and safety of customers, apparently that’s gone out the window now. It also reinforces the message to the idiots who think because we’re through the peak we don’t need to worry anymore

Deux · 23/04/2020 16:29

I think we’re more likely to see an increase in crime, thefts and the like if people are desperate and have no income.

Lots of people were also predicting and even hoping for police on every street, the army patrolling the streets and even tanks. Hmm

frumpety · 23/04/2020 16:44

Is B&Q open as in people can wander around the store and browse or open for click and collect only ? Our local one has been click and collect only for weeks and means there have been people queuing to collect stuff.

BakedCam · 23/04/2020 16:56

B & Q have huge warehouses as outlets. To manage the social distancing policy, a trial of 14 stores were opened. Easier to manage due to their levels of floor space.

The havent broken any restrictions, they weren't ordered to close as part of the non-essential closure orders issued to restaurants, hotels and gyms.

TJH130 · 23/04/2020 17:04

I still think the longer these restrictions happen then riots are more likely.

Look at the 2011 riots, all kicked off over the death of someone, but then it quicker spread around the country and a lot of it was put down to class tension, economic decline and associated unemployment

The type of people who riot will probably be the ones who rely on income which has disappeared overnight, it will be these type who have fared worse (despite what the middle class on here think) and this is where any rioting will come from

TheCanterburyWhales · 23/04/2020 17:39

I've only seen threads saying there was social unrest and riots in Italy.
There weren't btw.

Devlesko · 23/04/2020 19:27

I don't think enough of us are catching it and dying.
We are behaving too well, so opening up a few things here and there will bring cases up again in the next few weeks.
Nobody wants it to linger, and younger people want to be out doing things.
It's very tempting to start decorating and home improvements, I bet it'll be packed.

LangClegsInSpace · 23/04/2020 19:36

I got a bit twitchy during that couple of weeks just before lockdown when the shops were pretty much stripped bare.

Polly02 · 23/04/2020 20:05

Everything is going back to normal here. Shops are reopening-not all but enough- people are out with friends (not large groups but 2/3 families together) It’s been like this for all this week, increasingly so.

Everyone seems happy and not ready to riot.

BigChocFrenzy · 23/04/2020 20:25

Some posters predicted riots against lockdown

  • that didn't happen either

Everyone is too busy living on their screens to riot in rl

LuluJakey1 · 23/04/2020 20:37

I did think there might be social unrest, especially if there had been no support for those who had lost jobs or whose workplace had closed, and if there were food shortages. I think the 'fear factor' was a big part of that not happening- many people were scared of the virus and have complied with social distancing. And the government has put in place financial support through the furlough scheme.
I am not convinced we are past that yet. I think the longer the lockdown goes on the higher the risk. Domestic abuse has rocketed, more people are ignoring the 'Stay at Home' advice. I see lots of aggressive male cyclists on pavements in the last week and groups of young men playing football , basket ball and lazing on the beach. It wasn't happening a couple of weeks ago. I think some people are really finding it frustrating and need to be back at work.

HeIenaDove · 23/04/2020 21:33

If card payments only are brought in everywhere then i actually think it could be a possibility.

Not everyone can pay by card.

I see posts on here from people who say thats how it should all be done.

Fuck the elderly as per!

LilacTree1 · 23/04/2020 21:36

Now I’ve realised how much the government will interfere, I wish I could pay bus fare in cash!

Trying to stick with cash now, but I was doing that before because I was worried they’d phase it out.

Millicent10 · 23/04/2020 22:23

Regarding b & q, I was surprised that they closed initially. Hardware shops were always allowed to stay open and they already have a good size/layout for social distancing. They’ve lost a lot of money to the likes of The Range and Wilkinson’s when it comes to paint sales. I even saw paint for sale in Tesco last week.

LilacTree1 · 23/04/2020 22:24

I don’t even like shops but I really want my local Homebase to open, mostly so I can look at the plants.

Unescorted · 23/04/2020 22:32

Ohffs66 they sell to SME builders too. There is concern about materials supply in the construction sector which is still trying to function where it can.

Ohffs66 · 24/04/2020 18:18

unescorted that makes complete sense. I'm just concerned about the 'ooh I fancied wallpapering the bathroom' contingent and the message B&Q being open sends
