Home learning ideas

DSS is 5 and we are finding it increasingly difficult to home teach him. Anything he sees as work is met with refusal and then frustration. He will not work for more than a few minutes.

I really do not want him to fall behind. I do the home teaching on Fridays for him and DSD. Does anyone have any ideas how I can make phonics in particular fun? Simple games that don't seem like work?

He has also been given a project to do on mini beasts. There do not seem to be any around in the garden typically! Any ideas on things we could do for this?

My brain is absolutely fried going through the work for DSD and I feel like I've hit a brick wall with the EYFS stuff.

Thanks in advance!

there are lots of ideas here, including a letter treasure hunt. I'm not sure if its mentioned in the list, but you could also print out flashcards with simple words (you can print them off online), and stick them on the wall with bluetack. get ds to jump and touch the word you say out loud (practices reading)

have you tried looking under things for minibeasts? you might find some woodlouse? if not, have a look out when you go for your walk

Have you had a look at the BBC daily lessons? Let him think you're letting him watch tv?!

you could also try learning through games. education city has a free trial on right now, so might be worth a look link. the curious george apps bundle (eg: curious george: curious about shapes app) might be worth a look too x

For phonics - has he tried the games on phonicsplay? They have free access at present.
