Would you go back on holiday straight away?

We had a holiday to Walt Disney World In Florida booked for this April. Obviously we have got a refund on the holiday. We have told our children that we will rebook and go as soon as we can fly there and Walt Disney World has reopened. According to my brother, this is irresponsible of us and extremely dangerous! Ffs, how is it irresponsible?

Oh and if we could be guaranteed theme parks with no parades or fireworks just pure rides with no crowds we'd be there like a shot < weird family who liked Disneyworld but not overly fond of big crowds or parade watching >

Ylvamoon · 22/04/2020 08:55

One of the reasons corona spread around the world like wildfire is because of international travel.

I think travel will be restricted at least until there is a vaccine available for everyone.

Goatymcgoaty · 22/04/2020 08:55

Travel insurance may be an issue for some time - the companies aren’t covering Coronavirus. Would you still go without full cover?

Ylvamoon · 22/04/2020 08:59

rookiemere - go to Europe! We have frequently encountered theme parks without the crowds. You can go on popular rides 2- 100 times... if you wish. Just make sure you travel outside the destination country school holidays!
not derailing the thread at all

Nixen · 22/04/2020 09:01

We will be wanting to travel as soon as possible

MzHz · 22/04/2020 09:01

Hmm... someone’s brother is jealous isn’t he?

Smile, nod and make the decisions for your family as you wish.

Egghead68 · 22/04/2020 09:01

I’d wait till there’s a treatment and/or vaccine.

Makeitgoaway · 22/04/2020 09:01

Yes insurance. As things stand you couldn't get insurance to cover either being taken ill with coronavirus whilst away or travel plans being disrupted by the reintroduction of restrictions.

Polkadotties · 22/04/2020 09:11

I am meant to be going to Rome in July. If travel was allowed I definitely would still go. Me and my DSis are low risk and would ensure that we take all precautions

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 22/04/2020 09:13

I'd probably wait a couple of months until things have died down a bit but other than that I'd be off. 😂😂😂

showerdodger · 22/04/2020 09:15

I'm less worried about the risk more the insurance angle, getting stuck somewhere as I assume future waves will be "locked down" faster & not being able to fully experience wherever i'm visiting as sights are closed etc

Neverenoughcoffee · 22/04/2020 10:14

Lots to weigh up. My risk assessment would involve the following:
on what basis wdw was operating. (Reduced numbers/ reduced attractions etc.., what they had in place for social distancing)
Whether there would be sufficient restaurants etc open around the area.
Whether there'd be enough other attractions open, if you're likely to want to do more than just wdw
Whether our travel insurance would cover covid 19
Whether us hospitals have plenty of capacity and a good record for treating covid 19
What the r0 was there
What social distancing was in place.
Whether there'd be a general air of unease there amongst the locals, workers and visitors.
Whether it was our trip of a lifetime or whether we were likely to go and embrace it for what it is.

Sharing people's air on the plane for 9 hours would be another matter, plus it would depend how the airports were operating, to avoid large groups in one place.

If one of you was ill and needed to quarantine yourselves, how would you manage? Would there be sufficient supermarket/takeaway etc deliveries.

NailsNeedDoing · 22/04/2020 10:19

I’ll be going away as soon as it’s possible. I can’t see why your brother would have a problem, is he particularly paranoid about the virus or does he think he knows more than the governments that will make the decisions about when we can travel again, or is he just jealous?

Snowflakes1122 · 22/04/2020 10:21

Went in Feb just before it all kicked off. Had a great time, and will be going again next year all things being well.

I’d definitely go. I also have a couple of U.K. breaks and I’m hoping to go on these too.

We will all need a holiday after being stuck at home like this. Smile

HairyFloppins · 22/04/2020 10:26

I would be worried about travel insurance. We are meant to be going to the USA in August and it involves a theme park and a concert. I'm actually hoping it will be cancelled as I just can't imaging doing these sorts of thing for a while.

Planes are filthy things at the best of times.

Anyone would be absolutely mad to go overseas without valid travel insurance. Imagine the costs of needing ICU for weeks and then being flown home if needs be. Could run into tens of thousands of pounds. I can’t see any travel insurance companies covering Covid so on that basis, until they do, I’m staying in the UK.

EasyJet have released their Easter schedule today for next year, no doubt to try and get some cash flow. It takes you to their insurance page with Allianz and clearly states they won’t offer cover for Covid.

I can’t see how insurance will change their tune on this until we get a vaccine or a cure.

mynameiscalypso · 22/04/2020 12:05

I say this on every thread but travel insurance isn't mandatory. If you have the cash to pay for treatment/repatriation if you get unwell while abroad, it's not essential.

cassgate · 22/04/2020 12:32

We have a trip to Miami and Key West booked for July/August. We booked everything separately. I am going to try and reschedule for Summer 2021. Not worried about the flights as I know Virgin are allowing this (although summer schedule not released yet) but unsure about the 2 lots of accommodation. I am holding off for now as balances for accommodation not due until the end of May so we can wait a while longer. My main concern is travel insurance. If you went and god forbid one of you became ill with corona the expenses would bankrupt you.

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 22/04/2020 12:39

Hmm... someone’s brother is jealous isn’t he?
What is it with MN that so many posters think others are jealous? Just because he thinks it is irresponsible to go to Walt Disney World asap doesn't mean he is jealous. You have no idea what the OP's brother is like.

I also think it is irresponsible to go there straight away after restrictions are relaxed or lifted. I would wait until the global situation is much better and we know what is happening about vaccines, antibody tests, possible treatments.

Travel insurance may be an issue for some time - the companies aren’t covering Coronavirus. Would you still go without full cover?
Yes, this too. You could end up needing to sell your house to pay for treatment in the US if you fell seriously ill and insurance didn't cover it.

Traveller101 · 22/04/2020 12:42

How many people have that sort of cash though my name. A medical bill could astronomical if you got this abroad and needed intensive care. It would certainly be tens of thousands of pounds. Only the super rich would risk that surely

blue25 · 22/04/2020 12:48

No-I usually travel a lot, but do not want to be in an airport or on a plane anytime soon and I don’t think I’ll be going abroad again for some time.

mynameiscalypso · 22/04/2020 12:49

Yes but you have to weigh up those costs vs the risk. You just do the insurance company's job for them. Not saying it's what I'd do myself but it's a perfectly valid choice. My DF has a number of spreadsheets re different types of insurance and costs/benefits/risks to decide which ones are actually worth it.

SuperlativeScrubs · 22/04/2020 13:03

Having been saving for a holiday for a very long time, planning to be booked for this year, I will be making the personal choice to go.

pigsDOfly · 22/04/2020 13:23

travel insurance isn't mandatory

No it isn't, but the OP is planning to take the whole family to Florida as soon as it's permitted.

If one or more of them caught Covid and needed to be admitted to ICU and then had to be flown home whilst still in the recovery period it could end up running into thousands and thousands of pounds.

I suppose it depends how desperately someone wants to go to Disney.
