Is anyone watching Jeremy Vine this morning?

I'm probably being a bit dense but I wanted to ask anyone in the know about some of the advice sarah Jarvis has given this morning. Normally I find her very practical and talks a lot of common sense but shes made two points today I dont understand.

1: face masks and gloves. She seems to be against the public wearing these and I understand her point about them not being used correctly and therefore creating a false sense of security. However shes saying that they are unlikely to prevent the wearer from catching the virus but could slightly help prevent them from passing it on.

Now to me, that's the same thing. If wearing a mask means people carrying cv without knowing it are less likely to pass it on then that means fewer people are likely to catch it?

2: washing home made masks at 60°. Shes also said that fabric needs to be washed at 60 to kill the virus. Now I get this with nhs scrubs because of the viral load but were told the best defence we have is washing our hands with soap and water. The soap and water breaks down the cell of the virus wall and weakens/helps destroy it. We dont wash our hands in 60° water so why would a wash at the normal 40° in the washing machine with detergent not kill the virus on a small cotton face mask?

I'm not wearing a mask yet as I'm pregnant so I'm not leaving the house but I've got a few midwife appointments coming up so I've been thinking of making one for myself. What's everyone else doing?

You are right that in turn you are less likely to catch it if others are wearing masks but that relies on everyone wearing a mask. There are also issues when you remove the mask and the potential for spreading it then. Masks are different from skin. In order to kill germs on fabric it usually requires a hotter temp than that of skin. What temp do you wash your hands in?

Ah didn't know about the difference of germs on skin and fabric. I dont know the exact temperate I was my hands in, hot as i can stand i suppose but no where near 60°- I'd have no skin left.
