Do you think anyone from the government monitors mumsnet?

This is in the Guardian today:

"A third cabinet source said: “There’s no exit plan at the moment because they don’t want to do anything without the boss’s say so. “Not a huge amount is going on in these cabinet meetings.”

The source added: “They are waiting for the public to change their minds.

“We didn’t want to go down this route in the first place – public and media pressure pushed the lockdown, we went with the science.

“The lockdown will only start coming loose when the public wants it to – not ministers.”

-------
Given Johnson has history of seeing "which way the crowd is running, then dashing in front", do you think anyone has the job of monitoring these forums to see what public opinion is on easing the lockdown?
And more tin foil hatty - do you think anyone on here is a shill, paid to try to nudge that opinion?

Lol
There's software that can pick up info from a wide range of sources. Not for a second can I imagine any key conversations referencing something that was said on mumsnet.

Davespecifico · 21/04/2020 18:08

Not monitor as such, but a useful gauge of a broad range of opinions/behaviour so could be a useful source.

SpyApp · 21/04/2020 18:12

Yes.
Why wouldn't they?
I think there are a fair few threads started by journos and gvt researchers too sometimes in groups to gauge or nudge public opinion. Some are quite obvious really. I love it when the thread doesn't quite go the way it was planned.

Anecdotally maybe but not as a formal input. It is interesting as opinions on here do seem to shift en masse.

CoughKeepsOnComing · 21/04/2020 18:17

I hope so!! Then Chris Whitty will know we all love him and he has a fan club!!

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 21/04/2020 18:23

All social media as a way to assertion changes in public opinion all political parties do

But not MN in particular

effingterrified · 21/04/2020 18:25

Don't think MN opinion monitored or valued as much as Daily Mail comments, which pretty much drive government policy. Grin

But on some issues eg where largely middle class female opinions are wanted, then MN views will matter. So imagine that MN views on reopening schools will matter, for example. But our collective voice on say HS2 probably not monitored.

The other way round, I am absolutely sure there are paid trolls on MN whose full-time job is to influence opinion here.

There was a very notorious one on the Politics board leading up to the Brexit referendum, who disappeared and never returned once the referendum had happened (after posting non-stop all day before that).

missyB1 · 21/04/2020 18:25

Boris won’t allow Chris Whitty to know that we love him. He couldn’t bear for anyone else to have the attention.

effingterrified · 21/04/2020 18:26

CoughKeepsOnComing - less of the royal we.

I have no particular fondness for Chris Whitty, given his partial responsibility for recent government policy.

CatBatCat · 21/04/2020 18:37

No, they're getting their public speculation from panel surveys.

glueandstick · 21/04/2020 18:38

It doesn’t surprise me. Somewhere between mumsnet and pistonheads lies the popular opinion.

Concerned12345 · 21/04/2020 18:45

That's why I call for the communities secretary to resign.

Concerned12345 · 21/04/2020 20:50

Mind you, Boris Johnsons a twat for running to CHEQUERS rather than go back to Downing St..... ONE RULE FOR THEM ANOTHER FOR EVERYONE ELSE

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 21/04/2020 20:59

I hope they do.

WHAT IS YOUR EXIT PLAN?

TheCanterburyWhales · 21/04/2020 21:03

Might have done before penis beaker saw the beginning of the end as far as having a voice that counted.
Now, not a cat in hell's chance.

Their science bods could do with asking the Covid Graphs and Numbers thread people for a lesson or two though.

TheCanterburyWhales · 21/04/2020 21:07

I think a lot of the posters spouting factually incorrect and easily proven to be so stuff about how well the crisis has been handled might have been listening to the Hancock and Johnson featuring Harries half hour though.
