Scaremongering

callmeadoctor · 19/04/2020 11:57

Can we all take a deep breath and try to stop the scaremongering please. Yes you may have been ill, and yes your GP has said that you might have COVID (covering their arse). But unless you have been diagnosed, none of us know for sure.
All these posters jumping on the bandwagon................. its really not fair on the members who are anxious enough as it is...

Thanks for your input miss

MRex · 19/04/2020 12:44

How is someone saying they've been unwell scaremongering? Clearly they're not that bad or they've recovered if they're posting, that's the opposite of scaremongering.

This is the sort of covid-19 story that would scare you, just for perspective:

Frenchfancy · 19/04/2020 12:47

Scaremongering??! There is a global pandemic killing 1000s of people every day. The death rate is only at 2-5% so obviously lots of us have been ill without dying. I've seen 2 doctors, both of whom think I have it, but no tests are being given unless you need hospital treatment.

You can stick your head in the sand if you like, but Covid is real, it is out there, and lots of us have been ill with it.

GirlCalledJames · 19/04/2020 12:49

I agree, there are people on here saying in the thread title that they have had it and giving advice to others when they don’t know for sure. That’s not useful to anyone.

GirlCalledJames · 19/04/2020 12:51

The vast majority of people that doctors decide to administer a test to turn out not to have it. Doctors can’t tell without the test.
If you have symptoms, best to assume you have it in terms of staying at home but that’s not the same as deciding you have had it and giving treatment advice to others.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 19/04/2020 12:53

If someone hasn’t been tested they don’t know they had it. They can think all they like, but with the media being constant Covid 19 at the moment of course that’s what they jump to thinking.

Basically if they haven’t actually been tested they just take what they say with a pinch of salt 🤷🏻‍♀️

MikeBawldwinsBras · 19/04/2020 12:56

I think OP is talking about the 'pretty sure we have it but we haven't left the house for weeks so it can only have come in through the garden fence or a shopping delivery/envelope' posters.

When those people probably have hayfever or...nothing at all.

pigsDOfly · 19/04/2020 13:01

Like MRex I don't understand how saying 'I've had it and have recovered' is scaremongering, it's the complete opposite.

We know it's here, we know people have died. If people are being made anxious by the news of the deaths then they should probably avoid social media and stop watching the news.

However, people telling them that, 'people get this and recover' is probably a good thing.

MRex · 19/04/2020 13:08

@MikeBawldwinsBras - I saw one probable hayfever, nearly every reply was telling her it was hayfever. I doubt that is proving anything.

MikeBawldwinsBras · 19/04/2020 13:11

What did I say it was proving? I didn't.

All I know is I have known multiple people tested who thought they had it and didn't. And a few who had it but it was mild.

MRex · 19/04/2020 13:15

I meant proving to be scary, as OP was suggesting.

SophieB100 · 19/04/2020 13:23

I do think it is worth bearing in mind the statistics - so in hospitals they test people who they think might have Covid. Less than a third of them do. This has been the same since the early outbreak. So GPs are referring them, or they are going by ambulance, and two thirds test negative. They are presenting with symptoms that could be Covid. They are still ill and need hospital but they don't have it. That is a fact.

Doctors will always be cautious and won't say "It's not Covid" - more than their job is worth.

No one knows for sure, but I do agree that a lot of posters who think they have it, without being hospitalised, actually don't. Basing this on the hospital admissions data of those admitted.

I understand that some people want to have had it and got over it because of the peace of mind. But without testing, at the time of symptoms, they will never know. A doctor over the telephone doesn't know, nor do 111. This is unsettling for all of us.

Yes, there's a thread running at the moment that goes into a lot of detail regarding symptoms of 'Covid19' and home 'remedies' that helped.

But actually it turns out that the OP of that thread wasn't tested at any point and never actually saw a doctor, just spoke to one over the phone.

It's all very dramatic and guaranteed to alarm people who might be at all anxious, so yes callmeadoctor in instances like that it absolutely is scaremongering.

WellIWasInTheNeighbourhoo · 19/04/2020 13:57

Some people take comfort in covering their eyes & ears and pretending it’s not happening.

And some people take comfort in educating themselves on every little detail they can & sharing it with the likeminded.

Let’s not judge each others choices & personalities & stay in our lane.

everythingisginandroses · 19/04/2020 14:12

You sound defensive and scared, OP: you've been all over other people's threads saying the same thing. Don't read the threads if they bother you. Some of us have been unwell these last few weeks, much as you don't want to hear about it, and we have been finding helpful information and support on here.

callmeadoctor · 19/04/2020 16:07

You are so right Everything, hadn't realised.......................................Wink
