My aunt lives in a very big house. It's 6 bedroom with 30ft attic room. 3 bathrooms .30ft kitchen ,unity room, double oven , 120ft garden very wide aswell and in back of garden granny annexe the size of a small apartment with power and toilet. She also has separate dining room and 2 living rooms. Space for 4 cars on drive.

I live in a flat she has proposed to swap my flat for her house ?. This will be temporarily as she doesn't like to be by herself in a house that size and she doesn't like the cleaning. The grass in very long garden and doesn't feel safe in house on own as she only uses one room.

I am used to living in a flat . I would have to cover the bills but not council tax . She will pay my bills will it be a big difference from my 2 bedroom flat. I have 3 children ?

Assuming she owns this large house with no mortgage, if she dies who will inherit it? If it is you will you be able to pay the IHT?

Maybe111 · 18/04/2020 17:12

My flat is in the same town so she knows everything around here.

London

So your Aunt owns a 23 room property with a 120ft garden in London.

Hmm

You’ll need to check if your home insurance would be valid. If you allow guests to stay without you there for a longer period it can be excluded in some policies.

Large house and garden in St John's Wood? Is your aunt Kate Moss?

EmpressMcSchnozzle · 18/04/2020 19:13

Ask to see a couple of previous bills to give you an idea of the financial hit. And maybe ask her just to confirm in a letter or something that she's willing to cover the council tax? I take it you'll still be paying the council tax on your flat? And as others have said, that's quite a lot of garden if you're not keen on gardening!

Loving the people saying you won't need the heating on this time of year - I think we've turned our radiators off once since Christmas, and that's in the West Country! (And I grew up in a county where it could snow in August....)

This surprises me, we've had a lovely spell of warm weather over the last month. Easter was especially nice.

It depends on the house. Big old houses tend to be cold in my experience.

She should sell the house. A house that size in London would be worth a fortune.

MsPavlichenko · 18/04/2020 19:22

Hearing on here. Central belt in Scotland. Sunny days but cold at night, and often daytime too.

MsPavlichenko · 18/04/2020 19:22

Heating.

stella1know · 18/04/2020 22:07

Sounds perfect. Is there a catch though???

terrigrey · 18/04/2020 22:52

Makes no sense that she wants to stay in your flat for 6 months. Why doesn't she rent out her place and buy a flat to live in?
Are you and your aunt British?

HoffiCoffi13 · 18/04/2020 22:56

After the 6 months will she go back to living in one room in her mansion, with 9 unused TV’s? Why? Why doesn’t she just sell it?

Maybe111 · 18/04/2020 22:59

Yes British

Wow that's a 5 million pound house at least. Can she adopt me?

Claireshh · 18/04/2020 23:07

Is she offering because she feels bad for your children being in a flat during lockdown?

aWeaponCalledtheWord · 18/04/2020 23:53

you are Kate Middleton and i claim my five pounds.

Ellmau · 19/04/2020 00:21

Is she aware the council tax will increase by 25% if you move in?

GrumpyHoonMain · 19/04/2020 00:25

Do you think she’s anxious about CV and is indirectly asking you to move in with her without saying it? I think combining households is a better idea tbh. That way she gets the security of other people (house that size she can still have her privacy).

terrigrey · 19/04/2020 19:24

Aweapon Grin

MrsMummyBx · 19/04/2020 23:18

Sounds amazing! I’ll go if you don’t want to Grin
