Self-employed grant

MyPartInHistory · 18/04/2020 12:39

If you are self employed and you think you should be entitled to the grant, have you been contacted by the government yet?

I have heard that others have been contacted but I have not yet received any notification. My income has fallen off a cliff, so I am hopeful that I might receive something.

Premises?

Rubbish.

lubeybooby · 18/04/2020 13:55

@Guardsman18 that's a different thing for small businesses with premises. She'll be able to get what we are talking about here which is for any self employed person

user1487194234 · 18/04/2020 13:56

There is a separate Grant for which you need premises
Certainly in Scotland
We got 10k as our premises are under the size for paying business rates
I think the idea is that you need it to keep the premises going eg rent

Thekindyoufindinasecondhand · 18/04/2020 15:02

Definitely not true about needing to have premises to be eligible

Xenia · 18/04/2020 15:04

Premises - not correct except that those who pay business rates (so have premises) do get some kind of money.

There is one main scheme for self employed with profits under £50k and a other things separately for those with business rates to pay.

LizzieMacQueen · 18/04/2020 15:12

Likely based on your UTR rather than your NI number. I expect all HMRC Resources are directed to the furlough scheme at first.

user1487194234 · 18/04/2020 15:31

Well in Scotland at least you get 10k if you have premises but don't pay rates because you qualify for Small business rates relief
I got it yesterday
This is separate from the self employed payment

StatisticallyChallenged · 18/04/2020 16:32

Only if you can prise it out of Edinburgh Council's cold dead hands in our case user1487...

Teddypops · 18/04/2020 16:35

I should qualify. Does anyone know if it is on gross or net profit.

My last 3 years gross profit is 27, 53 & 57. But my net are al below 50k.

My accountant states it's based on my taxable amount. Does anyone know for sure?

StatisticallyChallenged · 18/04/2020 16:57

Pre tax profit i believe

Lovemusic33 · 18/04/2020 17:04

I haven’t been contacted yet, I work part time self employed (for 3 years).

Snorkelface · 18/04/2020 17:10

Until you are contacted be careful about the scam emails being sent out supposedly from HMRC about refunds - they can be quite convincing I've had two in the last week.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 18/04/2020 21:08

Snorkelface I was wondering about that myself - how do I know when HMRC get in touch they are the real HMRC (usually I tell because they are asking for money rather than offering it...) Are they going to send an owl with a letter or something?

TARSCOUT · 18/04/2020 21:14

@statisticallychallenged big council area, inundated with applications. Clackmannanshire only made first payments last week!

Xenia · 18/04/2020 21:18

It is pre tax profit so that must be under £50k to be eligible for the self employed thing. So if your profits are £55k then you are outside the help - your tax would of course take you well under that and you will have the delights of much higher taxes next year to pay for all those whose profits were under £50k (or who were well over but lied to HMRC).

If you have a limited company however and are an employee of it then it is different set out rules - furlough etc.

StatisticallyChallenged · 18/04/2020 21:21

Edinburgh Council claim they've paid out half already yet there are dozens on twitter who applied on day 1 and haven't heard a peep. They claim they made first payments on the 6th.

They're refusing to answer questions about processing times and you can't even get them to confirm receipt. There's no way 50% of applications were submitted before ours - they switched from emailed form to online application and I suspect they are easier to process and getting priority.

TARSCOUT · 18/04/2020 21:38

You definitely should have received confirmation they have received your application. Check your junk/spam mail. If not I would suggest you resubmit.

StatisticallyChallenged · 18/04/2020 22:47

We got the generic auto response on submission, but nothing else.

I actually suspect it may be in the council's junk/spam, but they specifically say not to resubmit online after using email, so until they confirm that we can't do anything.

Snorkelface · 19/04/2020 08:25

@EndoplasmicReticulum - traditionally HMRC like to send a vulture to pick over the scraps of my earnings! The scam emails have so far have all been sent from an HMRC email address based in Belgium so easy enough to spot. Genuine HMRC communication always still comes by post for me. I don't think they've got the system up and running yet - I'm presuming my accountant or my god-accountant Martin Lewis will say when something's actually happening.
