I have a really sore throat, glands are up...could this be a symptom of the virus? Anyone tested positive who began with a sore throat?

Supermarket ?

CathyandHeathcliff · 17/04/2020 14:03

When I had what I think was it 4 weeks ago, it started with a very sore throat. Then developed into a cough. I also had body aches and chills.

Lumene · 17/04/2020 14:34

A sore throat is a possible symptom of Covid-19

Obviously could just be a sore throat from a cold or something else so I wouldn’t panic, but would be extra careful with social distancing etc.

Beatricesheilamaria · 17/04/2020 14:39

Hi. I had a very sore throat yesterday. Felt very off, sneezing, tired etc. Then I remembered that it's the start of hayfever season and checked the pollen count which was high. Took an antihistamine last night and feel much better today. Hope you feel better soon.

I have a cold with sore throat and swollen glands. Vicks first defense is knocking it back apart from the glands. So I'm assuming it's a cold. It's good shit that stuff.

Allyfromtheblock · 17/04/2020 23:22

I also have a sore throat, muscle pains and headache. I have been isolating for a month and have only been out to a supermarket and jogging a couple of times. Can’t believe I still got it.

Gottheteeshirtandlostit · 17/04/2020 23:25

I've heard mumps is doing the rounds and has quite a long incubation period so it could be that? (Thinking of your glands being up).

middleager · 17/04/2020 23:28

I had the same OP and this damned virus has us all wondering...
However, now I look back I assume it was something like tonsillitis.

LaneBoy · 17/04/2020 23:34

I was convinced my older DCs and I had tonsillitis at first. The throat pain was horrific and it felt like I was being stabbed in the ear for a good few days - I was sleeping with my face on hot water bottles as paracetamol didn’t do much. Nothing to see in throat or ears - no swelling or redness.

I’ve had tonsillitis (both viral and requiring ABs) frequently over my 30+ years though and the other symptoms I ended up with have never been part of it before - I don’t normally get fevers at all, the pain in my knees/elbows/fingers, sore eyes, metal taste in my mouth and not being able to taste or smell, it doesn’t normally affect my appetite that much (lost 5lb in a week) and normally I’d struggle to sleep but I could barely stay awake.

I didn’t cough much though. Bit of chest pain. The DCs coughed for a while. DH wasn’t knocked sideways by whatever it was but he had a really sore throat for days and coughed a bit too. Who knows?!

Actionhasmagic · 17/04/2020 23:37

I had sore throat and muscle pain I wish we could know! I don’t think I had it though

ANoiseAnnoys · 17/04/2020 23:40

Mumps is doing the rounds yes, my friend and all her kids had it a few weeks ago. So a possibility.

I had a dry cough/slight sore throat for a week or two but I tend to think it’s not covid. I think the majority of people who think they have/had it, actually haven’t. Didn’t they say the other day that only around 10% of the population have it or have had it? It’s much more likely to be something else.

Tangledyarn · 18/04/2020 08:31

Mine started with sore throat and swollen glands (which i still have 6 weeks later)
but went onto develop temp, cough and real shortness of breath and difficulty breathing, chest pain, upset stomach, loss of appetite and extreme fatigue. Lost a lot of weight and have barely been out of bed in weeks although on the mend v slowly now.
Not tested but been 'diagnosed' by a few medics. Felt really unwell and it was very different to anything I have ever experienced in my life before.

lemonjam · 18/04/2020 08:36

I’ve just come to the end of over three weeks of the sorest throat I’ve ever had - was waking me in the night for painkillers even. No other symptoms except tiredness though so I’m thinking unlikely to have been covid.

MzHz · 18/04/2020 11:06

THEY say a lot of things

This virus has been in the UK since November

The symptoms vary widely and as there is no routine testing being done we nobody has the slightest idea of who has and had not had it.

Both my oh and I had a really weird cold in February with symptoms that only now are being attributed to CV, and we know now that many get CV and are asymptomatic.

A prominent doctor friend said she’s sure she’s had it and then described most of all the symptoms we had. At the time we were ill though it was only a persistent cough and a fever that meant it was cv.

Only when we have a reliable antibody test will we have any idea of the extent of immunity in the community.

Glands come up to fight any infection though don't they?

OP, it could be as cold, mumps or covid-19. Just take extra precautions as a PP suggested and make sure you contact 111 if you have difficulty breathing (and make sure you call 999 if you feel your breathing is really bad - ignore 111 if they tell you your breathing issues aren't bad enough for hospitalisation).

gamerchick · 18/04/2020 12:07

Man I couldn't do mumps again. I still remember the hell from being a kid with it. Awful illness.
