What's wrong with going out more than once?

An expecting a flaming here but -

What's the issue with going for a walk twice a day? The government have said once for exercise but i like to take my dog for 20 minutes in the morning and a slightly longer route of half an hour in the evening. I live rurally and rarely see anyone at either time.

I am taking the rules about isolating and mixing between households very seriously and haven't seen anyone or been anywhere other than shopping or walking since this began, but taking two walks a day is something I really can't get het up over.

What is the actual reason that our exercise has been limited? Presumably because it increases the likelihood of contact in busier, more urban areas? I'm sure a few of my curtain twitching neighbours have noticed me going out more than once a day but I genuinely can't see the additional risk when I see nobody and come into contact with nothing (gates, stiles).

Don't walk through fields with pregnant ewes. Keep your dog on a lead. Pick up your dog's shit. You don't need to drive to walk in the country. You can walk from where you live. You don't need a 'lovely view'.

ElisavetaOfBumsornia · 17/04/2020 09:29

Yes they are, and they very clearly permit going out more than once. But your argument appeared to be that you think the rules are wrong?

supercee · 17/04/2020 09:29

Difference between should and could. Needs and wants.

fourpeasinapod · 17/04/2020 09:29

@PurpleDaisies where is this? As far as I was aware this was all part of the rules

PleasantVille · 17/04/2020 09:30

I've missed the change to allowing exercise once a day, was that announced yesterday?

That would be a boon to me and I'm sure other dog owners as I currently use my exercise for a dog walk and would like to do a run too.

fourpeasinapod · 17/04/2020 09:32

Well like I said, if you’re social distancing I couldn’t give a toss who goes out more than once.

I go out more than once anyway. I couldn’t cope with Not being allowed out for my walks with my dog

Thank you ilovecak

I will see what I can find about the allowa ble certain circumstances for more than one exercise.

jasjas1973 · 17/04/2020 09:35

Judging by the Police guidelines on what is "reasonable" i'd not worry any more.
You can shop (as many times as you like) for food, shop for essential DIY products, shop for one off items, exercise, drive to your walk/run or cycle ride, which can be as long as you like.

Its hardy "lockdown" is it? perhaps "Slightly restrictive down"

Pulpfiction1 · 17/04/2020 09:36

Do people really think they are going to get the virus from a jogger running past them or a man whizzing past on a bike. Or even a couple walking their dog 2 meters away from them.

The chance of catching a virus when in an open space is very low.

And we're not trying to stop the spread, we're trying to slow it. That's why they have brought out these new rule clarifications, people have been going overboard and the infection spread is now too slow. We need it to spread fast enough that the lock down can be as short as possible and the economy impacted as little as possible, but not so fast the hospitals get overwhelmed.

Many hospitals are currently empty. We can afford to let it spread a bit more. I actually think outside cities the lock down should be greatly relaxed.

Floatyboat · 17/04/2020 09:38

@fourpeasinapod

And the NHS is grateful not everyone is as self absorbed as you.

Bartlet · 17/04/2020 09:38

I go out twice a day to walk our dog. He enjoys it and I enjoy it. He doesn’t even wear a lead as he’s well trained and doesn’t need one. We live in semi-rural neighbourhood and the roads (no pavements) are not busy.

I couldn’t care less if some of the lockdown police on Mumsnet think my morals are less than exemplary. I think they are slightly pathetic busybodies who are engaging in a competitive misery championship.

ilovecakeandwine · 17/04/2020 09:38

Going out more than once isn't like you are doing something really wrong it's only if you need to . I mean you shouldn't need to go out more than once some people don't exercise at all .
Examples are the other poster who exercised once with one child to run and once with other child to walk .
Me going out for a run on own then taking dc out later for a walk . I wouldn't do that every day just to have the option that and know that I'm not breaking the rules .
It's on the news website this morning at nothing new it's just clarification.
It's never been true that you can only exercise for 1 hour a day but people still quote that .

jasjas1973 · 17/04/2020 09:43

Did you listen to Merkel explaining to the German people about the R number?
Basically a tiny increase from R1.2 to R1.3 means the German health system is overwhelmed 2 months earlier.

R being the number of people an infected person goes on to infect.

In the UK we have zero idea what that number is because we can't or don't want to do the community testing, so lock down will remain here far longer than necessary.

jasjas1973 · 17/04/2020 09:44

That was to @Pulpfiction1

ImaPinkToothbrush · 17/04/2020 09:46

For me, the people going out more than once, driving to exercise etc whilst they think they are adhering to guidelines and not doing anything 'wrong', if every single person applied that thinking what would be the point of a lockdown?

The point of lockdown is to maintain social distancing to slow the spread. So as long as everyone applies common sense whilst adhering to the law then they will continue to maintain social distancing. Driving to a secluded spot where you will see no people means you are not spreading the virus. That is the point of lockdown.

My colleague is driving to meet his girlfriend for walks. He thinks this is fine.

the problem here is the meeting of the girlfriend, not the driving. Of course it's not fine. People spread the virus to people. Not cars.

Jesus people are wilfully stupid

silverdollarcity · 17/04/2020 09:46

I have to say, I don't think the part about exercise is very clear at all. It's not plain English, and it's open to interpretation. What does it mean? (I work in a job writing clear English that people can understand - I've been doing this sort of work for years and I'm struggling to understand exactly what it means...is it even targeted at the general public?)

feelingverylazytoday · 17/04/2020 09:48

The chance of catching a virus in an open space is very low
It's already been determined that nearly all transmission takes place in enclosed spaces www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.04.04.20053058v1
As long as social distancing rules are followed the risks of walking outdoors are tiny, and probably offset by the benefits - increased fitness, possible weightloss and intake of vitamin D and improved mental health for some people.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 17/04/2020 09:50

Going out more than once is fine. I'm getting really fed up of the "well what if everyone else did the same" crap spouted on here. You're more likely to win the bloody lottery than have everyone in the city/town/village rock up at exactly the same place as you at exactly the same time. As long as social distancing is kept it's fine.

Giraffey1 · 17/04/2020 09:50
  1. When am I allowed to leave the house?
You should only leave the house for very limited purposes:

shopping for basic necessities, for example food and medicine, which must be as infrequent as possible
one form of exercise a day, for example a run, walk, or cycle - alone or with members of your household
any medical need, including to donate blood, avoid or escape risk of injury or harm, or to provide care or to help a vulnerable person
travelling for work purposes, but only where you cannot work from home

PurpleDaisies · 17/04/2020 09:52

Police guidelines giraffey.

What's wrong with going out more than once?
fourpeasinapod · 17/04/2020 09:54

@ImaPinkToothbrush actually the driving is a problem.

You’re not meant to drive anywhere unless it’s for work, medical reasons or shopping.

All walking and exercise starts at your front door and ends at your front door. You must not drive anywhere for exercise so actually both are a problem in his case

PurpleDaisies · 17/04/2020 09:54

Look at my last post @four. Driving to exercise is not a problem.
