Shielding and no delivery slots

What are those of you doing that are shielding but no delivery slots? Sorry if it’s already been asked.

@PumpkinP no where did you mention that you were a single parent to 4 children under 10. It was just a suggestion to try to help. No need to drip feed.

PumpkinP · 15/04/2020 22:38

It’s not a drip feed, if I could go to the shop I would.

Tesco haven’t released slots past the 5th May. Sainsburys are only releasing Sheilded slots on a weekly basis.

CornedBeef451 · 15/04/2020 22:41

I got an Asda slot for my parents at 1.30am the other day so I'm hoping for similar insomnia in a few days to try to book another.

We're using a mixture of odd suppliers like muscle food for meat deliveries, a local farm shop that's basically click and collect for veg and fruit and other bits from a local zero waste shop.

It's a pain to piece it all but probably doable. Much easier than getting a supermarket slot though.

mrshoho · 15/04/2020 22:41

We've finally got a sainsburys slot. Had been trying last week but there was never any available. DH logged in this morning and there was one for Friday. Very hit and miss though.

Tattiebee · 15/04/2020 22:42

@CornedBeef451 asda release their slots at 10pm, the ones at around 1am are people who didn't check out in time to secure their slot.

Gazelda · 15/04/2020 22:46

Are you within 10 miles of a Morrison's? They've announced today that they're doing next day deliveries for vulnerable and/or older people. You order by telephone (from a limited list) and then pay the delivery person, preferably by contactless.

We are in the same position. DS has just finished chemo for blood cancer, if one of us goes to the supermarket he has to isolate himself and given his shaky mental health right now we want to avoid that if we can. He is also really scared about one of us going shopping and bringing the virus home. We live rurally so nearest click and collect stores are 25 miles away and there are always massive queues at local shops. It's a real concern.

SinglePringle · 15/04/2020 22:49

This is a plea... not a hectoring lecture! If you are able to go to the supermarket, can I gently ask that you do? Obviously, if you’re shielding, shopping on behalf of someone who’s shielding and can’t work the website correctly (elderly for example), live with someone who’s shielding then crack on. But if you’re not... please please try and go. It’s so stressful trying to ensure those who have real need have enough food.

mrsbyers · 15/04/2020 22:51

No need to be snarky , it wasn’t clear from your earlier posts that the 5 of you were one adult and 4 kids - you could have had a partner and people are trying to help

PumpkinP · 15/04/2020 22:54

Well people shouldn’t assume. Not everyone has a partner, people should know that by now. If I did he would have to go to the shop or I would.

Yes we do have a Morrison’s a couple of miles away so yes that will have to be something to consider I will have to find out if my local store is doing it.

No friends, family or fathers that could help?

Failing that do you have a local Facebook page. Ours has lots of people offering and requesting help.

Have you tried contacting your local council for support?

PumpkinP · 15/04/2020 22:57

They have the same father who has been absent for 3 years. No one I know is in a position to help. We did have a lady from the local council call us when we first registered but she said we was only allowed to have 12 items Confused I haven’t heard from them in almost 2 weeks I assumed it would be a weekly thing, but 12 wouldn’t last us very long anyway.

Instagram is full of adverts for local producers. It might be worth a look.

ChipotleBlessing · 15/04/2020 22:58

You have to book the slots three weeks in advance. Set an alarm and get up so you can queue at midnight. In the meantime, check Iceland at lunchtime each day. Check whether Morrison’s Deliveroo cover your area. Check whether Amazon Prime Now covers your area. Join local Facebook groups and find out which farm shops, butchers and bakers are delivering.

WhoWants2Know · 15/04/2020 22:59

Facebook has been a godsend for sourcing food outside the supermarket. At least 3 farm shops within 10 miles are doing a no contact collection or delivery service of all the basics you need.

It does cost a bit more than I usually would spend, but it's excellent quality food.

bedtimebrew · 15/04/2020 23:00

Amazon does some stuff too

And you can get a morrisons family meat box

I know it's not enough but if you can afford to there are bits you can get in different places to get by until you get a slot

OntheWaves40 · 15/04/2020 23:02

I think it must depend on your area as no issues here. Just keep hitting refresh on each supermarket. As others have suggested ring local veg shops, butchers, farms etc. They will probably be a lot more helpful but I know it’s not ideal when you need pasta and cereal etc

CurbsideProphet · 15/04/2020 23:03

@PumpkinP your GP can refer you to the NHS scheme being run by the Royal Voluntary Service. They arrange for a registered volunteer in your area to do your shopping for you.

CurbsideProphet · 15/04/2020 23:05

Also, Tesco are only releasing delivery slots gradually. So there will be nothing showing today, but it you log on again either at midnight or early tomorrow morning (I'm sorry I don't know what time exactly they're releasing them) more slots will be available for next week.

PumpkinP · 15/04/2020 23:05

I think that’s what we had CurbsideProphet but she said there was a strict limit of 12 items. Haven’t heard from them since.

Bessica1970 · 15/04/2020 23:08

You can get multiple Morrison boxes, you’re not restricted to one.

SistemaAddict · 16/04/2020 00:25

I've had the most luck with Waitrose but I used them already and have heard getting a slot as a new customer isn't possible. I'm not sure how true that is though. I am a priority customer after registering as shielded. I did get a slot with tesco the first week but that seemed to be pure luck. Do you have a local mutual aid group? Ours is going to the pharmacy and health shop for me. I can't get flour or yeast in my online shop but the health shop have it. I'm pretty sure they'll go to any shop that's open and there's lots of places locally that now offer delivery such as the butchers and greengrocers. The stationery shop and toy shop are also doing deliveries. They aren't open to go there but do free delivery. Check out Facebook for your local group.

notapizzaeater · 16/04/2020 00:30

Were shielding, we've bought loads from local suppliers, veg boxes, meat boxes etc. Neighbours get a few bits if we need them in between. We already had milk and eggs delivered so just added juice to that order. We've been allocated Sainsbury's have managed one slot. I managed to get an Asda click and collect about 1am in the morning which I will collect this weekend, hoping I've got enough for 2 weeks

PumpkinP · 16/04/2020 00:39

I’m not friends with any of the neighbours. I managed to get a slot tonight with Tesco’s for the 6th of may so now it’s a case of what to do in between that time. If Tesco’s hadn’t have limited it to 80 items I could have tried to get enough to last. When I got on Tesco’s at 11 minutes past 12 (after queuing) all the slots were gone! luckily I clicked on the priority slots bit and there was one for 10am-6pm. I couldn’t believe all the regular slots were gone after 11 minutes!

I’ve never shopped with Waitrose and I also heard they don’t accept new costumers.
