I was out with my daughter for an early evening walk, when we turned the corner and she went into a jogger. It was no ones fault.

We came home (luckily we were only a few minutes away) and showered immediately and her clothes were put in the washing machine.

Obviously she touched my daughter briefly and said sorry.

I’m concerned because my husband is in the shielding group. We have been doing what we can to protect my husband. Luckily we have all been working from home and I only usually go out once a week for the weekly shop. I come in and shower straight away and wash clothes etc etc.

My daughter (who suffers from anxiety) is now worried she is going to make her dad Ill. I’ve reassured her this is not the case.

We live in a small house with only one toilet. No spare bedrooms etc or dh would be self isolating from us.

I don’t really know what I’m asking, I’m guessing some reassurance. I just needed to get it out somewhere.

And anyway 30s/40s are still quite young aren't they?? (Sad)

mathanxiety what a bizarre demand, for people to run in the road. The roads are empty near you. There’s still a reasonably regular amount of traffic on some roads round here - certainly too much to be able to safely run on the road!

mathanxiety · 15/04/2020 22:53

Is the OP's jogger hogging the pavement anywhere near you, Dyrne?

You are assuming then, just as I am.

ShastaBeast · 15/04/2020 23:06

@mathanxiety where do you live? I had to wait for about 20 cars before I could cross the road this afternoon, never mind walk/run in the road for several meters. It was 3pm so not even rush hour. Plus there are a lot of police and ambulances racing down the roads for emergencies. Unfortunately it’s not possible for pavement users to safely keep 2m away and many people don’t appear to be bothered - walking in the middle of the pavement or three people walking side by side.

mathanxiety · 15/04/2020 23:08

Joggers have as much right to be on the pavement as walkers.

They don't have the right to keep on going when approaching a junction or corner if they are unsighted to the degree this jogger appeared to be.

This is about a sense of responsibility, a modicum of care for others, and common sense about taking into account that there are more people out walking on footpaths these days, as well as small children on tricycles, etc.

If everyone clings doggedly to rights we will end up with people in A&E.

The footpaths are not a personal gym for anyone, and those who use them for running need to take into account that they could cause an injury just as they could if they were out in a car going too fast for road conditions or ignoring other traffic.

Road traffic is now at 1950s levels across the UK. If a jogger wants to prevent accidents there is far less danger now than there was in early March.

As a Remainer, I was scared of Brexit. Now witnessing how batshit crazy so many are about Covid, I now a) understand why the result; and b) recognise that we're fucked.

Critical thinking, intelligent analysis- is now considered a medieval art, like alchemy. Tho alchemy, alchemy- that has some positives! Anyone's aunt an Aries with an Ouija board? That's pretty much where we're at.

A person briefly brushing against another, one fit enough to be jogging, really doesn't pose a quantifiable risk of contracting Corvid.

BackforGood · 15/04/2020 23:14

The question is, why was the jogger not running on the street?

I have seen joggers here who seem to have no idea at all that running past people while breathing heavily is an appalling thing to do.

The streets are empty. There is no traffic. Get off the paths.

Maybe tell that to the jogger who was airlifted to hospital from near me, a couple of days ago after being hit by a car ?
Or, you'd probably have to relay it to her family as I'm not sure she is out of her coma yet

What a ridiculous thing to say Hmm

bakedbeanzontoast · 15/04/2020 23:14

Why is the size of the jogger relevant?

mathanxiety · 16/04/2020 09:02

It's relevant because it shows what a hazard she was, running on the pavement.

BackforGood - it sounds like an extraordinary accident, given how empty the streets are.

RuPaula · 16/04/2020 10:26

A jogger cane round the corner yesterday (on the pavement) and ran into the back of my buggy. He had headphones in, so wouldn’t have heard my squeaky wheel.

BackforGood · 16/04/2020 17:15

Well, not the only one in the City. A 12 yr old was killed crossing the road with his family last week - hit by a car. If you have the 'traffic' or 'local news' pages coming into your feed, then there are similar incidents every day still Sad

mathanxiety · 17/04/2020 06:28

Well that is extraordinary given the huge reduction in traffic.

Traffic is so reduced that air quality has greatly improved in most formerly busy urban areas.

Someone is going to be seriously injured or worse by an insouciant pavement jogger one day.

BackforGood · 17/04/2020 17:28

I didn't think I had to list them all, but, there are incidents like this happening every day mathsanxiety. These aren't 'one offs'.

You'd be idiotic to run in the roads.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 17/04/2020 18:35

To all those saying the joggers would not be out running if they had COVID 19, you can be infected BEFORE you show symptoms.

I think it would be helpful if joggers just slowed down a bit when going round corners on footpaths, it’s not going to distort their exercise, unless they are jogging in a maze.

DownWhichOfLate · 17/04/2020 20:07

Mathsanxiety needs to change name to Joggeranxiety.
