Can I collect my daughter from Uni?

DD is stuck at uni in Hertfordshire. As there were cases at the uni and my husband is on the shielded list she refused to come home on the 23rd and decided to stay by herself to self isolate.
That was 3 weeks ago and she has run out of food.
Can I now go and collect her?
I know we are all supposed to still be staying home - but the idea is not to pass on the virus - which she has done by staying put. Is it unreasonable for me to take 1 car journey of 40 minutes to pick her up and bring her home.
She is getting a bit edgy now - and we are not keen for her to go out and start shopping when we have everything here.

100% go and get her. Much more sensible than the suggestion of taking food for her. You are not visiting her, you are going to fetch a vulnerable young person. She has been self isolating, that is now over, you are not at risk from her in the car. Just go.

TeensArghhhh · 15/04/2020 18:40

As a parent on the shielded list I would say go and get her but make sure she stays isolated in her bedroom for 7 days to make sure she isnt showing symptoms.

PickAChew · 15/04/2020 18:41

Surely a lot of students who haven't already headed back to their parental home will need to, in the next few weeks, as their tenancies end or halls close, anyhow.

ApplesinmyPocket · 15/04/2020 18:42

I don't know why you'd ask MN for advice on this one! Just make your own mind up (I don't mean that unkindly Flowers

(Actually it's got to the point I wouldn't, and haven't, 'asked MN' for any advice on anything at all, because there are many who now camp out on here only to try and make someone else's life that bit more unpleasant every day.)

It is ENTIRELY allowed to collect University students and move them in and out of their accommodation.
Several threads (with links) on the Higher education board.

I collected my son from Uni after the lockdown I am shielding so he completely isolated for 10 days first to make sure he was virus free and then i collected him.

BlueJava · 15/04/2020 18:55

Yes, I'd go and get her.

LaDonnaDellaCasa · 15/04/2020 18:57

Thanks all for the sound advice - I really appreciate it.
Just to put minds at rest - she hasn't completely run out of food but it would mean her going shopping again - that's another person going out into the public domain and she would have to self isolate for another 14 days before I could collect her. If I am in the car and bring her straight home we are not going to be in contact with anyone.
So I think in the Spirit of the thing - self distancing- this would be better. I think 95% of the students have gone home already, so its very quiet there.
I am slightly anxious about being stopped by the police - and whilst I think they are doing a sterling job, when I see them talking to people on the TV they dont always seem to be keeping that far away. As I have been like a mad woman doing everything to keep DH safe - even putting the shopping in quarantine - I am concerned that they will make me get out of the car.
I thought I could write a note an put it up at the window?
Thoughts............

Yes go and get her she has isolated and wont be infectious. Some people are losing their minds have a safe trip x

Mummyoflittledragon · 15/04/2020 19:02

Thoughts....

Make yourself a mask, take gloves and type up a note to hand to the police explaining why you are out on the road.

LaDonnaDellaCasa · 15/04/2020 19:02

Thank you all!!

Yes. I would.

ListeningQuietly · 15/04/2020 19:07

LaDonna
I am driving around a fair bit at the moment.
I carry evidence of why I'm going where I'm going.

For you, proof of ID and a copy of her tenancy will fully protect you against even the most jobsworth police

but the motorways are positively French at the moment ;-)

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 15/04/2020 19:09

I’d get her. DH got our DS last Thursday, I’m so much happier he’s home.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 15/04/2020 19:10

Dh did a 7 hour round trip, he says he didn’t even see a police car.

emmathedilemma · 15/04/2020 19:10

I'd definitely go and get her.

teenagetantrums · 15/04/2020 19:14

Just go and get her. The police are not going to stop you. Even if they do it's allowed. You don't need a mask or gloves

Underhisi · 15/04/2020 19:14

You are allowed to move homes. What you can't do is flit backwards and forwards

teenagetantrums · 15/04/2020 19:16

I'm out everyday in car and walking never been stopped. I do have a key worker letter in bottom of my bag just in case

Bluntness100 · 15/04/2020 19:19

My husband got my daughter on Friday, five hour round trip, she self isolated to make sure It was safe, for nearly a month actually, and then we brought her home. No way I’d have refused to have her back. No police were around, there are no road blocks asking you where you’re going.

He didn’t even get out the car. Just get her.

slipperywhensparticus · 15/04/2020 19:20

I spoke to my mp he said my daughter should stay until the university closes in June then I can go get her it might be because she is in wales and they are still open so it would be deemed unnecessary

ListeningQuietly · 15/04/2020 20:24

Your MP is an arse

LaDonnaDellaCasa · 15/04/2020 20:46

My daughters uni is closed - it was locked down quite quickly as they had a couple of cases.
They were already all working remotely the week before the lock down.
Appreciate all the support!
