I’m ill, how?

It’s only a cold and sore throat, I don’t suffer from hay fever so it isn’t that.

I haven’t been outside these four walls for 18 days - even for a walk or in the garden and no one else has either. 18 days ago was my last walk in the fields outside. We had a shopping delivery the day after that and nothing since. Post falls into a plastic bag tied to the letter box and I leave it for 72 hours and then take it out, open it, throw it away and wash my hands. I’ve touched the bins I suppose, which thinking about it were at the bottom of the drive (about 10 meters) so I guess I’ve been out for that, but washed my hands immediately afterwards.
How is it possible?!

You can develop hayfever at any time, and the pollen count has been very high recently. Likely to be that.

wowfudge · 15/04/2020 09:19

Sounds like it's not coronavirus.

Smashedavacado · 15/04/2020 09:21

I'm sorry to hear you're not feeling well and hopefully it is nothing. This is something that I'm constantly thinking about - if or why people who are completely isolating can end up contracting the virus. We are being super vigilant - wiping shopping down etc but I have friends who don't feel this is necessary.
I'm interested to see what our fellow Mumsnetters think.

GiveMeAllTheGin8 · 15/04/2020 09:21

Hay fever. I developed it last summer after 35 years of never having it!

ineedaholidaynow · 15/04/2020 09:22

I’m assuming OP is asking how could she have got any illness as not been in contact with anyone

Triglesoffy · 15/04/2020 09:23

It could just be a Cold because you haven’t been outside and you are run down.

MayFayner · 15/04/2020 09:26

I had this. I think it is hay fever and I possibly do, in fact, get hay fever. I would normally just have assumed it was a cold.

milkcartoncat · 15/04/2020 09:26

It’s not covid.
I just don’t know how I’ve caught anything at all and it worries me that if you can do all of the above and still catch something then it’s possible to still catch covid.

Well you are being ridiculous OTT about it all. Leaving post in a plastic bag for 72 hours? Not even going in your garden?! Come on now, that's hysterical. Anyway my point is that your immune system is likly weakened from lack of exposure so as much as you likly have hay-fever the second lock down is lifted and you go out you are likly to become very ill.

MRex · 15/04/2020 09:30

I expect it's hayfever, I don't usually get it but have it this year. It's the highest pollen count in 70 years apparently. Try taking an anti-histamine, it clears my nose and throat almost straight away.

wowfudge · 15/04/2020 09:43

I wash my hands when I get home from a walk or supermarket trip. I wash my hands after opening the post. I don't wash the shopping although I wipe milk bottles as they've been outside. Compared with many people before all this I would wash my hands much more than others do because a family member worked in catering and drilled it into us when we were growing up.

If I get it, I get it - I might have already had it, but I've not been tested so I don't know. Many more of us will get Covid-19 before the year is out. When I do, I won't be beating myself up for not quarantining the mail, etc.

ifonly4 · 15/04/2020 11:07

OP, are you sure it's a cold? I normally get a touch of hayfever in June, but I've noticed the last week my nose and eyes have felt irritated, I've been sneezing a little and I've had a sore throat, increasing after I've been out for exercise. I was sure it was hayfever rather than Covid, but decided to take some hayever tablets we've got as sort of confirmation. I've taken them for a couple of days which helped, forgot to take one yesterday and I had a sore throat in the night and this morning.

Oxyiz · 15/04/2020 11:10

Could be silent acid reflux. Or something that's been dormant for a while. Or passed on from someone else?

purpleboy · 15/04/2020 11:27

@GreytExpectations the first past of your post is unreasonably unkind.
Why do you have authority to tell people they are ott and hysterical?
Op is entitled to conduct her life in anyway she sees fit, she doesn't need idiots like you berating her for taking precautions.

Insideout99 · 15/04/2020 11:37

My 1 year old is quite poorly. Persistent dry cough, hoarse throat, tired. He and the rest of my family haven’t left home for 3-4 weeks. I’ve picked up 2 click and collect orders in that time, drive through and no human interaction. I’m baffled

My thoughts were along the lines of yours OP. I don’t know if it’s Covid but even if it’s a cold obviously we’ve been exposed to something despite being careful

Inkpaperstars · 15/04/2020 11:44

Anyway my point is that your immune system is likly weakened from lack of exposure so as much as you likly have hay-fever the second lock down is lifted and you go out you are likly to become very ill.

Um, no. An adult being isolated for a short time will not have this effect.

OP, what exactly are the symptoms?

Oxyiz · 15/04/2020 11:48

Yeah, three weeks in the house won't knock you back that much. I've suffered from bad agrophobia in the past and three weeks is nothing.

GreytExpectations · 15/04/2020 13:31

Oh grow up, would you. This is a public forum which means everyone's opinions are allowed. Just because you dont like mine doesn't give you anymore "authority" to tell me not to post. Also, maybe learn how to have a discussion without resorting to calling people idiots. The OP isnt behaving in the reccomended guidelines anyway so her precautions are extreme.

Oxyiz · 15/04/2020 13:33

But what value does your post add? It doesn't tell the OP anything about why she's feeling unwell. Its just you sounding off about things you don't like.

HoffiCoffi13 · 15/04/2020 13:34

I’ve developed hay fever for the first time this year, I’m 35.

Porcupineinwaiting · 15/04/2020 13:36

@GreytExpectations I'm assuming you've not had COVID 19 yet if you can speak of it so lightly.

Mustbetimeforachange · 15/04/2020 13:38

It could just be a Cold because you haven’t been outside and you are run down.
A cold is still a virus (and it's a coronavirus, which notably, there is no cure or vaccine for) so still caught from somewhere. Pollen counts are really high, so likely to be an allergy.

Tulipstulips · 15/04/2020 13:40

I’m pretty sure I’ve developed mild hay fever this spring aged 41... I’ve had a scratchy sore throat on and off for more than a week, with itchy eyes and a runny nose - if I take an antihistamine it feels better, and I’ve realised it’s worse on days where the weather forecast says the pollen count is high. I’ve been staying in religiously so I’m wondering if it’s the result of my immune system not having anything better to do?!

GreytExpectations · 15/04/2020 13:40

But what value does your post add?

I've suggested to OP is likly hay-fever and offered my opinion on her choices. Just because it isn't the favoured opinion, doesn't mean it isn't valid to post.

I'm assuming you've not had COVID 19 yet if you can speak of it so lightly.

How am I talking lightly of it? Surly, any reasonable and sane adult could comprehend that not even going into your own garden is over the top in regards to precautions? Even the shielded groups are allowed into their gardens

Thighmageddon · 15/04/2020 13:44

Even the shielded groups are allowed into their gardens

I though they were advised not to go in their gardens and to crack open a window for fresh air?

I developed hay fever in my 40's. I'm barely even going in the garden at the moment, just sitting indoors and still I'm snuffly and scratchy with irritated eyes.
