My dad was told he had Covid 19 this morning.

My dad had the test last Wednesday and was phoned this morning to say he had tested positive. He was on a flight from Spain just over a month ago and had been beside someone who was coughing all the way back on the flight to Ireland. But my dad had no high Temperature and only a chesty cough when he went to his gp 9 days later, so not typical symptoms. Anyway his GP was going to have a think about whether to refer him for the test. My dad was told the next day to go for a test but then the testing criteria changed so he didn't meet the criteria which included a high temperature. He was surprised to be called again last week to have the test but decided to go. I think the fact he has sleep apnoea and uses a Cpap machine every night has saved his life. The only people he has been in contact with are two of my sisters and my mother. My sisters were in work and shopping and my mother was in the chemists recently. Now they are worried they might have given it to a vulnerable person although they were hand-washing and social distancing. Just shows that not everyone has a high temperature or a dry cough even people over 75.

I expect you could buy a cpap?

Would an oxygen concentrator help for general covid breathlessnes?

Miscella · 15/04/2020 16:41

Ffsnosexallowed - why do you think the HSE will not contact trace?

@Hollyhobbi

My friends were on a flight out of Alicante oin the 13th March too. It was an evening flight which flew into Stanstead. Could it be the same flight?

goldpendant · 15/04/2020 21:50

@Keepdistance I'd love to buy him a CPAP. He's been looking into it this week - no idea how to use one mind you!

Hollyhobbi · 16/04/2020 00:59

@BenjiB they were flying to Dublin from Alicante airport. Did your friends get Covid 19? Obviously the fella on my parents plane went through the airport that day so he could easily have infected other people. Really shows how the virus is carried so easily around the world. HSE were already on to my mum and sisters yesterday. No tests necessary unless anyone develops symptoms and self isolation for two weeks. My mum is cocooning anyway.

My dad had to buy his own Cpap machine and he pays for any parts/maintenance needed for it. His pension is too high to qualify for a medical card which gives free health care and other benefits (and nearly free prescriptions) to those on low incomes or benefits in Ireland.

@BenjiB their flight was an evening flight too!

@Hollyhobbi - no they haven’t got it as far as they know. When I saw your post I let them know it may have been the same flight as I know they said it was one of the last flights out. They flew into Stanstead though. I said I would have thought they would have been contacted by someone x

goldpendant · 16/04/2020 07:15

@Hollyhobbi that's really interesting. Here he should easily qualify but his referral has been ridiculous (delayed twice and now Covid19), will look into private purchase for him.

Update. My mum had the 'trots' this morning, she's had a sore throat and nasal congestion for a few days and she has a headache, now plus she's more fatigued than normal. Got her to phone her GP who chatted to her for 10 minutes (sometimes the secretary doesn't even answer the phone in this practise) and she told her she is a priority for testing due to her age, close contact with a known case, and the fact she had a malignant breast tumour removed very recently and the symptoms she has now. Doesn't matter that she has no high temperature either. So she's waiting on the HSE to phone her again with a test appointment date and time.

I hope you mum is ok, Hollyhobbi. Such a worrying time.

Keepdistance · 16/04/2020 21:06

Hoping she hasnt got it

starray · 16/04/2020 21:12

Yes, I had to use a CPAP in hospital. The machine forces oxygen into the lungs. Covid 'doesn't like' oxygen.

Paddlinglikehell · 17/04/2020 00:12

I hope your parents are okay. I believe I had it, not tested, but GP said very likely. I was in London the last weekend in Feb. Became ill with aches, pains, headache and fatigue. I never had a temperature either. I’m Day 29 and still coughing, but feel better.

Do they routinely test if symptoms in Ireland?
