Supposed to be Travelling abroad in July final payment due in next couple weeks if we cancel now would loose deposit which is few hundred pound or we wait and see if gets cancelled and then refunded or if we are allowed to travel by then have the holiday ? But I'm concerned in the slim off chance holiday happens that I wouldn't want myself or dc to be ill abroad but we are going with other families who don't seem as concerned .would it be unreasonable for me to cancel now and loose deposit not sure as group booking if that would affect price etc ? So would that be unfair if me on others .What would you do .?

I’d pay it off and then get a refund if you don’t go.

Daffodil101 · 14/04/2020 00:24

I’ve just this evening cancelled our holiday abroad. If we get poorly, I dint want to be abroad.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 14/04/2020 07:55

If it's a package you're protected. I'd pay it, I highly doubt foreign travel will resume by then so when they cancel you will get a full refund.

If your holiday is with TUI, don't expect a refund any time soon. We requested a refund on the 17th March for our cancelled April holiday and are still waiting.

We too have a balance of £2k (already paid £3.5k) to be paid on the 8th May for our August holiday. They will ,owe us nearly £10k once we've paid that.

OvaHere · 14/04/2020 10:33

I booked to go to Spain mid August with TUI. After reading here and the MSE forum that no refunds are forthcoming so far for people whose travel dates have already passed I decided to cancel.

We've lost the 1k deposit but I weighed that up with adding a further 4k to that with no time frame as to when we might get a refund if Spain are not open for tourism by August (likely).

But also I don't want take my family abroad this year. I'm not confident about health insurance coverage or whether there could be further waves of the pandemic. We might run the risk of being quarantined in a small hotel room for the duration as I think it's likely that restrictions could go up and down at the drop of a hat for the next 12 -18 months. Anxiety and uncertainty does not make for a good holiday.

Losing the money isn't pleasant but I consider myself fortunate that 1k is all I've lost so far in this pandemic. Others have suffered much more financially and otherwise.

I would just take the hit on your deposit. There is a danger that you pay the balance and the holiday goes ahead, but you don’t actually want to go (no way I’d go abroad in the next few months). Then you’d lose all your money.

We were due to travel in July but have cancelled because we do not wish to travel. If we cancelled now we lose deposit only. If we cancelled after full payment we would lose 30% and then if later still 50%. We don't wish to go abroad this Summer now with all this going on. We did not wish to be in a situation where we would lose 50% ie.£3600 when we only lose £240 now.

Even if we waited there is a risk the company won't cancel.

Easilyanxious · 14/04/2020 10:56

Thanks for all replies
Yes I’m thinking rather loose deposit than take the risk of being stuck in hotel. We have paid a fair bit off as been paying in chunks but last couple payments have held back just incase as don’t want to be waiting On all money back then at least have some for a deposit for hopefully next year or if some kind of travel in UK is allowed maybe a few day’s asY

We have holiday booked in August with Tui. I know it’s never going to happen and I’m going to just cancel and forfeit the deposit. The Times mentions TUI offering date changes not refunds.

We are due to fly two weeks on Saturday, our holiday still hasn’t been officially cancelled. We’ve no holiday clothes, no suntan lotion etc. The situation isn’t going to be resolved in two weeks and so we’re pretty sure we’re not going but still the holiday company can’t cancel it just yet. I wish I’d just lost the deposit and not paid the full balance. We’re also not expecting a refund any time soon but the certainty of it being cancelled would be good now. In your shoes, I would probably cancel and lose the deposit and wait for a refund on the balance you have paid.

edwinbear · 14/04/2020 11:36

Be mindful that the majority of travel companies are refusing to offer refunds. They will off to rebook or to give you a credit note, whilst ABTA are lobbying the Government hard to ensure the credit notes they offer are ATOL protected (so you would be refunded if the company went bust), this has not yet been formally approved.

Easilyanxious · 14/04/2020 13:47

Interesting on refunds only being credit etc but I’m guessing if technically only had to pay the deposit by certain date ( although we paid if more ) they would have to give us back minus the deposit . The company we use don’t have alternative holiday for next year that we want otherwise I would if considered just booking with them for next year

@CakeAndGin how comes your holiday not cancelled yet , who is it with as I think tui and jet2 are saying no holidays until mid June earliest ??

Doilooklikeatourist · 14/04/2020 13:52

Not quite what you asked , we should be on a tui holiday next week ( booked last November and paid in full in February)
Our holiday is now cancelled , and our travel agent is processing the refund for us , we’ve been told it will be at least 28 days
Prior to this , tui we’re offering amendments to the holiday , which we didn’t want

Easilyanxious · 14/04/2020 23:28

@Doilooklikeatourist hope you get your money back soon it's good they are refunding your

One of the reasons I booked with Jet2 and not Tui was the deposit. We have only paid 60pp and are due to pay balance in June.

I suspect we won't go. Unless it's certain that we can go and our holiday will be as booked (very unlikely) we won't pay the remaining balance and will cancel.

I am prepared to lose then deposit. I am not prepared to transfer almost 3k and then it is cancelled.

I am not worried about being ill actually. Our travel insurance will cover it.
