Can you hear less traffic?

I'm a key worker, so still driving to work, and there is definitely less traffic on the roads.

But there is still a fairly steady stream of traffic and walkers and cyclists going past my house. DC are in the garden, and so I have an ear out, and I would say there is the same traffic noise outside that there always is at a weekend (I know strictly speaking it's not a weekend) Don't get me wrong, it's never massively busy, it's not a main road, people passing are likely to be local. But still, listening, you wouldn't know we are supposed to be limiting outings.

I see all this drone footage of completely empty streets in central London, but in my small town nothing really seems to have changed.

What's everyone else's experience, and what sort of place do you live in.

Definitely! We live about 500 yards from a major A road (it runs along the back of our village). I hadn't realised how much traffic noise there usually is until it wasn't there!

TheWashingMachine · 13/04/2020 18:44

We live in London Zone 2 on quite a busy road, we have two bus routes on our road, it is noticeably quieter and the pollution is right down.

Perfidy · 13/04/2020 18:45

Friend biked over the m25 yesterday, said it was spooky quiet.

Timeandtune · 13/04/2020 18:51

We are in a suburb of Glasgow. Traffic is virtually zero and haven’t heard a plane for weeks.
Much more birdsong and the noise of children playing in back gardens.

AnneElliott · 13/04/2020 19:04

Much quieter. We live in zone 4 and there's a noticeable difference in traffic noise in the mornings.

Inkpaperstars · 13/04/2020 19:08

London, not central but we have quite a busy road nearby which has been much quieter than normal. The contrast didn't kick in till a few days into lockdown but it really has now. It's not deserted by any stretch but it's usually really congested at rush hours and busy throughout, it's now normal/quiet at those times.

Way less traffic but been hearing quite a few sirens through the day and night for the past week now. Am in London borough of Croydon, south of the borough. Live at the top of a hill and main road towards central Croydon is at bottom of valley, so sound seems to travel. It's like a constant reminder of what's happening in our area right now :(

poppet31 · 13/04/2020 21:42

My house backs on to a motorway. I stood in my garden this morning and for a good minute or so, heard nothing but silence. That never happens!

Kalifa · 13/04/2020 21:44

I just looked at flightradar and the amount of planes across the world is still considerable. Might be carrying food and other goods though, not passengers.

Yellredder · 13/04/2020 21:49

Definitely less traffic through our village which has a main A road going through it. However, they're definitely going faster. We usually get loads of bikers speeding through at weekends - definitely not as many of them, but there are still some.

cologne4711 · 13/04/2020 21:58

Much less where I live. Which is a good thing, given the number of couples who won't walk single file and you end up having to walk or run in the road.

Someone posted a picture of the motorway locally on Friday evening when you could have normally expected part of the Easter getaway and there was one car on it.

MarshaBradyo · 13/04/2020 22:01

Much quieter but quite a few sirens throughout the day

Laiste · 13/04/2020 22:11

Yes. No traffic noise here. There was never much, to be fair but now there's none. We can hear when a delivery van is coming down the road Shock

Middle sized village but we're in the older quieter end. Houses are spaced well apart. Yesterday i was in the garden and said to one of the DDs listen ... ... absolutely nothing but bird song. No traffic, no planes and actually no gardening noise. The birds seemed really loud!

One of my older DDs is in isolation with her boy friend in the boyfriend's parents house and they live in a small town a few miles away. She says there's much less traffic noise, but sitting out in the garden where they are it's a constant riot of powered gardening tools revving and humming and chopping. She jokes there'll be no gardens left round there by the end of this!

pourmeanotherglass · 13/04/2020 22:19

We're on a main road near pubs and a football ground. Definitely less traffic, and also less shouty drunks.

TowerRingInferno · 13/04/2020 22:45

Much less traffic.

It’s normally hard to cross the main road in our village. Now you could walk along it in daytime because there are no cars.

Etcni · 13/04/2020 22:51

Yes but more sirens. I live about a block away from a hospital with an A&E Sad

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 13/04/2020 22:53

Hardly any cars

We dont live on that busy a road but there has without doubt been a reduction

BunsyGirl · 13/04/2020 23:04

I live in a very rural area (although it is only 40 miles from London). We are still getting groups of bikers making a huge amount of noise. Villagers have witnessed them in lay byes drinking in groups. Reported to police but it keeps happening.

FlamingoAndJohn · 13/04/2020 23:07

My road is always very quiet but it’s now even quieter.

I’m about 1.5 miles from a very busy A road which is quieter. I’m also close to a port which is very quiet.

sunandrose · 14/04/2020 03:23

I can usually hear the distant hum of the A30 (we live in Cornwall) and it’s so much quieter. Mainly lorries and vans now. On the handful of trips I’ve made to either the supermarket or to deliver bits to my parenst the roads are noticeably quieter, verging on dead.

Redglitter · 14/04/2020 04:26

I live parallel to a main road and theres been a massive reduction in traffic. It's strange for it to be so quiet

Bowerbird5 · 14/04/2020 04:53

Less traffic through the village apart from the tractors and when we went for a walk yesterday I realised that there was no noise from the motorway. When we walked over the bridge there was only one wagon going north and two cars going south.it was like it was when we moved here.

NotEverythingIsBlackandwhite · 14/04/2020 07:33

We have an 'A' road about 200 metres away. Hardly any traffic on it. It"s lovely.

NotEverythingIsBlackandwhite · 14/04/2020 07:35

Refuse Collectors have been up my minor road this morning and a couple of posties park in the road but, apart from that, it's all quiet here.

woodencoffeetable · 14/04/2020 07:38

less road traffic, yes. but what really makes a difference to my area is less air traffic noise, esp helicopters.
