Firefighters are quietly and without fuss collecting bodies from homes. One area that has official figures of 84 deaths they are very busy doing this. These guys are often overlooked so I want to say thank you for risking your lives to carry out this unenviable task.

Guess I am the only one who is thankful then.

It's a dreadful job and thanks to them for doing it.

However, describing fire fighters as 'unsung heroes'? Hardly. They are some of the most fondly thought of workers in the UK and around the world.

I used to be involved in emergency planning. It soon dawned on me that unless it falls into the direct remit of the police or NHS, the fire service step in. The random scenarios people would come up with would always end with the Fire Chief saying ‘we’d do that’. So if doesn’t surprise me that they’re involved in this too.

I have great respect for all our emergency services. I couldn’t do it.

Bless them all for doing this. As if their ‘proper job’ isn’t hard enough.

From me, thank you. Flowers

I know about them cutting people out of cars, worked at a place that sold the cut saws and diamond blades they used. But to be collecting bodies daily seeing distressed relatives, I cannot imagine how hard that is day in and day out.

I couldn't agree more OP

This isn't actually happening within the fire service yet as much as the news would have you believe. Some of these things have been agreed nationally in principle, but each brigade will need to locally agree what they will do and in our brigade at least we have very little stock left in the way of PPE which means firefighters will have to carry out some of these procedures wearing full breathing apparatus, which isn't an easy feat. And in my experience, the management of (my brigade at least) are not looking after their staff in relation to Coronavirus as well as they should be.

In addition, staff carrying out assistance to Ambulance are being seconded into this role (voluntarily) and not doing their firefighting role at the same time.

TheWordWomanIsTaken · 13/04/2020 11:16

That's a shame LeSqiugh.
In my nephew's service, the management are looking after their staff. My nephew has been told he won't be seconded to these duties because his wife is in a very vulnerable group so he will remain on firefighting duties.
I did get the impression though that it had already been implemented.
In any event, it will happen. And I take my hat off to all firefighters and public sector workers in this country. They have been treated abysmally by tory governments for the last decade (wasn't it on Boris Johnson's watch as Mayor of London that huge cuts were made and stations closed) and are now hailed as heroes. Like that's enough.
