Anyone else had a pay cut and are renters?

My husbands company this week announced a pay cut that is a bit of a chunk! They plan to do this for 3 months.
All the company are working from home and have not had their workloads cut in any way.
We know they will be saving money on rent as a company. We can't claim anything as he is not being furloughed. They have said they won't be making up the lost wages.

I am on a very basic sick pay due to recent surgery. So this couldn't have come at a worse time. We are on our ass!

We called our letting agents to ask for a reduced rent. They said that they were not offering that. We told them they needed to ask the owner. But they have said it's not necessary. We know the owner has no mortgage at all as the house was left to him.
I appreciate it may supplement his income but he has been very good for the last 12 years in refurbishing.

I think it's the letting agents just giving blanket answers.

Anyone else had similar?

I’m sure legally they can’t refuse to pass on the message to the landlord

I agree it’s shitty what your husbands company have just. But they still have to pay rent at their premises, whether they are there or not. I don’t think whether the owner has a mortgage or not is that relevant. They have an asset which they are letting you borrow for a fee. As far as l am aware rents have not decreased

Home owners are having mortgage holidays.
Renters are most definitely being shafted by this as they are at the discretion of the owner

Mortgage holidays mean time off from paying it but at a later it has to be and with interest. It doesn’t mean it’s never paid back

It's just crap all round

Would you be entitled to any Universal credit if your rent is high?

zsazsajuju · 12/04/2020 02:05

If his pay is being cut, you can see if you can get universal credit. Otherwise, I don’t understand why you can’t pay your rent. A mortgage holiday for your landlord just let’s them defer payment of their mortgage, you seem to be asking them to reduce your rent so you don’t pay it at all rather than postponing it.

Shitsgettingcrazy · 12/04/2020 07:50

Did you ask to reduce it, or temporarily reduce it and pay more a month in, for example, 3 months?

blossompie · 12/04/2020 08:02

See if you can claim UC. A mortgage holiday only defers the payment and also you can normally only take it once or less than a few times over the lifetime of the mortgage so it's understandable some landlords may not want to do this if it's not suitable for them right now.

Have you got the landlord's address? Is it in your Tenancy agreement?

If not then you can request it writing and the agency legally have to provide this within 21 days otherwise they can be fined.

Your legal relationship is with the landlord not the agent so you are entitled to write to the landlord and ask.
