To wish DM would piss off with their scaremongering stories

I'm sick to fucking death of it. I just want to read something else for once and all I ever see is who has died. An 11 YO boy has which is so unfortunate but posting these is not helping anyone. Why haven't we got any stories on covid 19 recovery? Surely there is someone out there desperately wanting to post it to put other people's mind at ease. Sorry for the rant my health anxiety is proper flared up today Sad

There are certain parts of the media that love a good old gloat, but I can’t understand why you’d seek them out if you suffer from health anxiety? The situation is pretty bleak. I can’t imagine there’s much of a positive spin you can put on hundreds dying every day.

Lovebb · 11/04/2020 17:18

Mumsnet is worse than the Daily Mail

kevintheorangecarrot · 11/04/2020 17:22

@Cheeryandmerry I've deleted it now. I don't know why I seek it. I think because I am hoping to find something positive to calm me down but every single story is grim and full of people who have died of it. It's devastating. I really need to just take a chill pill and calm the f down.

WorraLiberty · 11/04/2020 17:24

I'm losing count of the amount of Daily Mail readers who come here to rant about the Daily Mail Hmm

I know they tend to have a reputation for not being very bright, but honestly!

Titslikepicassos · 11/04/2020 17:24

The media are reporting lots of feel good recovery stories Confused as well as extensive coverage of the bloody weekly clapathons.

How exactly do you suggest that they report the news about this global pandemic?

Titslikepicassos · 11/04/2020 17:26

The telegraph online have a CV good news round up at 12:30 each day.

HairyFloppins · 11/04/2020 17:26

Mumsnet is on par with Daily Mail at the moment. Constantly on and on about obese people. When those poor nurses passed away I read on here well they look obese.

The DM are loving all this.

kevintheorangecarrot · 11/04/2020 17:28

Will check telegraph out. Sorry guys I am grouchy. Not feeling too good either I have posted on 30+ / Lungs forum with possibly suspended covid. Right now I feel like I am burning up so I'm just hoping nothing untoward is going on.

Hamster1111 · 11/04/2020 17:29

I have stopped reading the DM. I knew it was a crappy newspaper before this situation but I have to admit I enjoyed the comments for the entertainment. But reading it now is a seriously bad idea if you are struggling to keep your rational head on. Much better news sources out there if you want more credible info. I'm glad you've deleted it, well done Smile

Baaaahhhhh · 11/04/2020 17:31

DH and I were discussing this very thing yesterday.

If about 1,500 people normally die every day, and we have a Covid death rate of about 1,000, of which some would also have been in that 1,500 anyway..... so, we could say we will be getting about 2,000 deaths a day at the moment.

That is still evened out by the 2,000 births per day. Life goes on.

Knocksomesense · 11/04/2020 17:31

The 11 year old I know died a couple of weeks ago? This seems bizarre to me

HandfulOfFlowers · 11/04/2020 17:32

It's because bad news sells. Never forget that the first priority of the media is to sell papers.

Baaaahhhhh · 11/04/2020 17:33

Also of the 66 million people in the UK - "only" 1,000 died of Covid yesterday, I know, I know, it's horrible, but that is only 0.000015% of the population.

toryandproud · 11/04/2020 17:34

in terms of newspaper rankings, I'd say it goes something like (from best to worst for bs)

  1. the times
  2. the telegraph
  3. the ft
  4. the rest (guardian, indy, dm, express, mirror, S*n, Star.
thatgingergirl · 11/04/2020 17:36

I take the i paper - the reporting seems factual to me and there's a "thankyou letters" page in there today. A good mix.

Cheeryandmerry · 11/04/2020 17:39

The trouble is, the more tawdry elements of the media are like crack. You know it’s really bad for you, but the comments in particular suck people in.

I avoid the news on telly full stop. I just do a quick catch up online each evening. My local Facebook group used to be lovely but that’s turned toxic with multiple posts every day from people frothing themselves into a frenzy over supermarkets, sunbathing and cyclists.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 11/04/2020 17:39

Absolutely no different in the Guardian, but I guess with their own particular spin on the stories. Initially I found their minute by minute run down anxiety inducing. I pick and choose what I click on now but maybe I’ll give the DM a go, same old shite I guess but with a different viewpoint, a change is as good as a rest 😉

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 11/04/2020 17:42

Actually I think I agree with toryandproud (wow, lot to think about in that sentence 😂) and their run down

KaronAVyrus · 11/04/2020 17:47

I think Mumsnet is on par with the Daily Mail at the moment.

TheCanterburyWhales · 11/04/2020 18:15

Well let's hope the unimportant 11 year old's mother isn't on here eh?
I'm sure she'd be most apologetic her child's death upset you.

Shame on you.

PeterWeg · 11/04/2020 18:22

If about 1,500 people normally die every day, and we have a Covid death rate of about 1,000, of which some would also have been in that 1,500 anyway..... so, we could say we will be getting about 2,000 deaths a day at the moment.

According to government death statistics, weekly mortality has increase from 10k to 15k per week, so an additional 5000 are dying per week.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 11/04/2020 18:25

I agree OP- its annoying me too.
They were screaming about full lockdown "never ending" the other day and the next day it was going to last until "next year". Right, how is that going to work considering the mortgage companies are only offering us a 3 month break then? we'll all be homeless by the summer if this is true. Thats really going to help social distancing isn't it?- just make sure your cardboard box is at least 2 m away from the next gutter family!

BigChocFrenzy · 11/04/2020 18:30

"scare-mongering" would be more if they started saying your 11-year-old may die too

They are not inventing stories (yet !)
just choosing the most sensational ones for the ad clicks

.... If good news sold better than bad, then all you'd read about is recovery stories

If you want facts and calm analysis about anything, avoid the Fail
Try the FT COVID section, which has free articles during this crisis - v public-spirited of them

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 11/04/2020 18:35

That is still evened out by the 2,000 births per day. Life goes on

I know at a population level you are right, but was this your reaction when 2k people died in the World Trade Centre? Will it be how you feel when someone you know dies from Covid-19?

However, I agree that the sensationalism is appalling (the DM is entirely appalling...).

halcyondays · 11/04/2020 19:03

There have been stories of recovery as well, such as the 99 year old war veteran.

It’s very sad but unfortunately it’s not scaremongering. There have been children and young people who have died of Coronavirus. There have been very old people and people with very serious health conditions who have recovered. Nobody should be complacent because they’re young and/ or healthy or think they’re doomed because they’re in a high risk group.

Try getting your news from the BBC and limiting your consumption if it’s making you very anxious.
