Covid weird disease

My gran is in hospital, she's tested positive for Covid. She lives in a care home and is 96.

But apparently she's doing ok! She's on oxygen and they're trying to wean her off if.
I think she might survive this.

Aibu to think this is the strangest disease? How come a 35 year old with no underlying health conditions can succumb to it? And not my 96 year old gran who has all manor of illnesses.

It's about risk.

A young person with no underlying conditions has a very low risk of dying (I'm not sure of the actual percentage, but lets say 0.05%).

An old person with existing serious conditions is at much higher risk of dying (for sake of illustration, lets say 80%).

If 2000 people in the former group got Covid-19, you would expect 1 to die.

If 2000 people in the latter group got it, you would expect 400 of them to live.

You can't take risk factors and say with absolute certainty what the outcome will be for an individual.

That's good news about your gran! I hope she continues to recover.

Yeah sorry, bit of a ridiculous question really! The stats explain the story.

I just think I'm in shock. Thanks for the good wishes.

I agree, it does seem to behave very strangely. I think sadly it comes down to chance sometimes, tiny differences in your immune system and other small factors. Could also be viral load. It does happen with other illnesses too - I had a relative with a degenerative condition, wheelchair user who smoked a packet of cigarettes a day - he had severe pneumonia and although hospitalised was relatively well. A much younger friend had pneumonia and went into a coma in ICU.

Glad to hear your Nan is doing well Smile
