Media reports vs reality

I think the media is really underplaying how many more deaths are expected and quite how much the NHS is already unable to cope.

Why would we be opening up thousands more beds in temporary hospitals unless we expect the death toll to rise massively?

We still have huge issues with accessing PPE and the basic ingredients for testing kits. These issues are just not being solved and the government plans aren't delivering anytime soon eg ventilators built in the uk are still weeks always from becoming available if they ever come to fruition at all.

NHS staff have been gagged so that they will be fired if they speak the truth about what is going on in hospitals right now.

I swear another whattabouttery re the flu and i might actually implode.

That’s the trouble with anecdotal evidence, it’s not generally very consistent or reliable (as the varying info we’ve received demonstrates!)

I think it’s been quite widely acknowledged by the medical experts that this will be a very tough time for the NHS. I suspect there will be occasions where some hospitals are stretched much too far. The Nightingale hospitals will hopefully help on that front as will the numbers continuing to stabilise.

PuzzledObserver · 10/04/2020 19:53

I think the death toll is going to be well above 20,000.

We are already virtually at 9,000, the daily death rate is going to carry on increasing for another week or two till we hit the peak of deaths, and then come down, so that’s probably over 20,000 “diagnosed in hospital” deaths.

Not counting those in care homes, at home, in hospices, who never get to hospital and therefore, under current policy, don’t get tested.

There are around 400,000 people in care homes in the UK. Chris Whitty said this week that there is Covid in 9% of care homes, but according to people on the ground, it’s over half of homes affected. It is extremely difficult to keep people who have dementia but are mobile confined to their rooms. I think we could easily see 10% of care home residents die.

The oxygen issue / lack of infrastructure to deliver quantities/correct pressure was a bit alarming re: tonight’s press conference.

Are your odds of survival, if critically ill, affected by hospital you attend?

Emeeno1 · 10/04/2020 20:05

It is as if you want this to be so. Why is that?

DeathByBoredom · 10/04/2020 20:08

Re care homes: death rate in over 80s is over 15%, higher with age. It will rip through care homes.

LaurieFairyCake · 10/04/2020 20:14

The death toll from flu last year was 1,500

There are currently more than 15,000 deaths from CV

  • deaths at home and deaths in care homes are not in the count

If it's under 50,000 dead it will be almost miraculous

PaulGalico · 10/04/2020 20:26

I think this is just another scaremongering thread. I also believe we have had a lot of information about the possible number of deaths - with 20,000 being a conservative estimate. We know this, it came from the scientific advisors. What is the point of this thread?

DeathByBoredom · 10/04/2020 20:34

Blah blah scaremongering
Blah blah it's only flu
Blah blah no need to buy food in advance
Blah blah it's not going to spread
