Are you wearing gloves and mask to the supermarket?

I’m avoiding going as much as possible but had to go yesterday and noticed that a lot more people were wearing gloves and/or masks, more so than when I went three weeks ago.
I wore disposable gloves as I find they remind me not to touch my face. I wash my hands as soon as I get home and wash or wipe down the shopping. Other than that I don’t suppose there is much more I can do?

@Derbygerbil with all due respect as at today's latest figures:

Chance of getting Covid-19 seriously and dying:

8958/66000000 x 100 = 0.014%

Chance of getting Covid-19 seriously - no of +ve tests.

70272/66000000 x 100 = 0.11%

I haven’t been to the supermarket in probably a month as I have an underlying health condition. But if I can’t get a delivery slot in another week or two, yes, I’ll need to go. I have a proper respirator face mask with filters than are fine enough to filter out viruses. Dh uses it for work, so it’s something we have at home anyway. Yes, I’ll wear it if I need to go. I wouldn’t wear gloves as I don’t see the point but I do use clinnell wipes on my hands anytime I do need to go out (and then wash well when I get home). They’re what the NHS uses and very good (I always keep some at home as they’re really good for dealing with sickness bugs, etc).

TheoneandObi · 10/04/2020 20:53

Yeah gloves. I don't get what you would. If you touch your face while wearing them you're at just as much risk.

TwoBlueFish · 10/04/2020 21:01

No gloves,no mask and no wiping down of groceries. I do clean my trolley and use hand sanitiser at the start of shopping and try not to touch my face. I use hand sanitiser when I get back to the car and wash my hands after unloading the shopping.

EvilPea · 10/04/2020 21:05

The car parks are littered with gloves.
Not only is it bad for the environment, some poor sod has to risk corona picking them up.

I’ve noticed a direct correlation between glove and mask (both not one or the other) and twatty behaviour of getting too close and reaching round you on shelves.

I wear disposable gloves but only because I have eczema on my hands, with open sores. I take them off when I get back to my car but obviously I have to touch my car to get in and have touched my shopping, so not sure that they really do any good. I have a big stock from oiling my kitchen worktops, other I wouldn’t, and they’re not sterile so would be no good to a hospital.

FirewomanSamantha · 10/04/2020 21:09

I put mine in a bin in my car, just in case my post made it sound like I just drop them next to it!

randomsabreuse · 10/04/2020 21:11

Gloves - yes, mask no.

Have plenty of gloves from doing up old house, reduced paint on hands, effective reminder not to touch face and limits what I add to any viral load around the shop - have to touch things to read packets for hidden dairy!

Mask - don't own any and both attempts at wearing a running buff over mouth/nose lead to constant fiddling to get the thing to stay up but actually let me see! Tonnes of face touching and touching area over my mouth seems less than ideal to protect others.

My view is try to minimise viral load rather than drive myself crazy trying to avoid all contact with the virus - no one in the household is very vulnerable so trying to balance risk with environmental impact and prioritise risk to others.

Car keys are the biggest issue with gloves. Not taking gloves off until in the car to minimise risk of dropping them and them blowing away somewhere, so touch my keys both with and without them. If I took them off on approach to car I'd then be touching the trolley without gloves... and still have to deal with keys!

Arnoldthecat · 10/04/2020 21:13

No point in wearing gloves. I avoid supermarkets like the plague and try to get deliveries or C&C. If i must go supermarket i go at off peak/quiet times. I have my list and i get in and get out rapido. No mask (not yet anyway) but sleeves rolled up. I put a soapy flannel in a tupperware box along with a towel in the boot. Exit shop, shopping in car, wash hands and forearms, get back in car. Get home put shopping away ,wash hands again.

SpeedofaSloth · 10/04/2020 21:14

No.

inwood · 10/04/2020 21:15

I wore a mask today at the supermarket, to stop me touching my face, I do it absentmindedly a lot. I don't wash my shopping.

Derbygerbil · 10/04/2020 21:18

@OhTheRoses

I’m aware of the current figures. The chances of dying of COVID-19 are not 0.014%. That is the chance of being already being dead from COVID-19.

PointlessUsername · 10/04/2020 21:19

Yes to a mask & gloves.
Wash hands as soon as i get in.

PrivateD00r · 10/04/2020 22:07

No mask, no gloves, no washing of items. Plenty of hand washing and I keep alcohol gel in my pocket and rub it on my hands before touching my purse and once I get back to the car.

I have to wear PPE in work all day, I cannot bear to wear it beyond that to be honest. Masks only protect others, not yourself, so no point in wearing them unless everyone does. I wear one in work even if the patient is asymptomatic to protect them from me, not vice versa.

Inkpaperstars · 10/04/2020 22:12

Although I slipped up last night and took a Lindt bunny out of quarantine.

Mask yes. Ffp3 and properly fitted. Gloves no but scrupulous about handwashing.

Wash n wipe everything down before putting it away.

goldpartyhat · 11/04/2020 11:25

I wear a mask and take hand sanitizer to use

Inkpaperstars · 11/04/2020 11:46

One glove off as approach car to do keys? Or another glove underneath?

randomsabreuse · 11/04/2020 14:53

To be honest I'm being a bit slack and deeming the car controls and keys "potentially contaminated" and just washing hands after I get in. As I said above my main aim is to limit viral load rather than ensure all traces are removed.

I'm properly hating myself for the massive increase in single use plastics and limited recycling options as it is.

Standrewsschool · 11/04/2020 16:49

No, no gloves or mSk.

I did see a feature on tv the other day about masks. They said that many people wear them inappropriately, and if you touch your mask, you could get contaminated. Also masks makes people feel safer than they are, so they could relax on overall safety (as demonstrated by the lady who stood too close to me in the post office #stillfuming.)

geojojo · 11/04/2020 16:56

No.
