Well, we have a Communities Secretary who has stood on podium at the 5pm Press Brief and urged us to Stay Home, Protect the NHS and Save Lives. He has been found to have visited his parents in Shropshire (an 80+ mile round trip) to take them some groceries. The man, Robert Jenrick, has demonstrated the “it doesn’t apply to me/I’m different” attitude that will see BBQ’s/parties/picnics happening up and down the UK, this weekend.

How are people to get the message above when those in Govt. don’t get it? It’s the “Ive visited hospitals today and shaken hands with COVID19 patents” from Boris. And look where that got him.

And we ordinary folk are being vilified for not shopping essential items only. Police waiting to rummage through our shopping baskets to check we haven’t put contraband in there alongside the bread and milk. I don’t get it.

I’ve struck to the rules ridgidly. Haven’t shopped for a week now but will need to go to Boots tomorrow to collect DH’s diabetic meds. What’s the point if Mr Jenrick just “nips” to visit mum and dad?

@InkPaperStars ... good point. Why can’t people see that sometimes the simple explanation is the most obvious?

Are his children at a school in Hereford?

Or his rented house in his constituency (not Hereford)

Or in London?

Because I think they are NOT at school in Hereford, making this a SECOND HOME and against the rules.

TheLadyAnneNeville · 10/04/2020 21:44

The guy is a class one sleaze. Just making it up as he goes along, to suit himself. And he has all that Tory spin behind him.

As I said at the beginning, we are fed constant bullshit.

This idiot does not do the UK people any favours, does he?
Sad thing is Newark had a candidate on the final shortlist who had lived in the town for several years and really was deeply engaged with the community. I guess maybe he wasn't such a smooth talker on selection night, although I think it was close....but he would have been a vastly superior MP for the local area. and neither did this Tory selection committee. Let’s all hope he is booted out pronto.

TheLadyAnneNeville · 10/04/2020 21:55

If the man had any principles he’d go. But he won’t.

OP posts:
TheLadyAnneNeville · 10/04/2020 21:57

Because, he doesn’t.

Abit like Stephen Kinnok having the labour party fawning over him when he did the same thing

GrimSisters · 10/04/2020 22:58

I've met Jenrick on several occasions. My delightfully scruffy but erudite DH had a lovely chat and a handshake with him at a village event soon after he was elected in 2014. Made him properly squirm with some light chit chat about school recommendations in the local area, whilst knowing full well that there was no way he'd ever move his family here.
I've been along to one of his surgeries (with my true blue mate) to ask for help in saving a local charity. He has a habit of talking right over you. Even when we'd told him that a particular funding source wasn't an option because of x y z (we'd done our research) he had his PA phone and check anyway. My friend promptly changed her mind sky him after that. Grin
I recall congratulating him on FB for securing something for a local school, but then gently questioned his figures on education funding, quoting a government body's report suggesting it had decreased in real terms. Instead of engaging , he deleted and blocked me. When I spoke to him subsequently, he said he only deletes and blocks abusive messages - wafted away my attempts to show him the screenshot.
Oh how we chuckled when he came along to a school assembly. Keen to get the photo op out of the way and run, the teacher told him to wait until afterwards so he had to sit through the whole thing. Shock
He's commonly known as Robot Generic. Is completely out of touch with his constituents. Instead of renting a nice house in Newark near the mainline station (from where many commute to London), he's situated himself in much 'naicer' Southwell 20 minutes away by car, choosing to pay 2/3 more than necessary in taxpayer funded rent.
He's totally out of touch, but still people vote for him!

TheLadyAnneNeville · 10/04/2020 23:15

@Grimsisters... it’s the age old story of Tory safe seat “not really interested in his constituents as long as he has a seat”. There’s yards of ‘em.

I’m sick to death of this bloody Govt. They have no idea of working class people’s lives. No idea about the issues re. housing and low pay and poverty and... And fuck me, I’ve just read how well Jenrick did under Esther McVey. Says it all, really.

If his children are at school in London then it's blindingly obvious they all have decamped as soon as he had inside knowledge about planned lockdown rather than wait for it to be announced on TV.

Coz they wouldn't have decamped if schools were not closing.

goldpartyhat · 11/04/2020 09:23

@LaurieFairyCake It's not a second home. It's their primary home (a mansion no less). They moved prior to lockdown. Schools are closed anyway so what difference does it make. We were in lockdown prior to schools closing because ds had a vomiting bug, so were told to isolate for 14 days. You don't know their circumstances, neither do I.

@Inkpaperstars There are many people regarded as key workers, so presumably government is included in that, who are having to work then go home to family. Maybe he's working from home? Who knows what his working conditions are? He and his family have, like most people, had to do a personal risk assessment. My DH is a key worker in the nhs and is having to live in a caravan on the drive because we are shielding my vulnerable disabled son. He has to go to work, just as some government workers do.

He doesn't sound a particularly good person, but I will defend anyone who is doing what they think is for the benefit of their family provided they are sticking to rules, regardless of whether they live in a palace or a slum.

NameChangedToProtect1 · 11/04/2020 09:44

What this man did was not a problem. Why is it an issue if the journey was 40 miles instead of 4 miles? It's as though you need to stop for fuel or food at a services for an 80mile round trip!

NameChangedToProtect1 · 11/04/2020 09:49

I despise the Torys and their Brexit, just seems as though this trip isn't really an issue.

TheLadyAnneNeville · 13/04/2020 17:02

After what happened to a gentleman of colour in Fallowfield, Manchester on Saturday, it’s a good job Mr Jenrick wasn’t stopped by Greater Manchester Police. He was threatened with pepper spray and so was his vulnerable mother, then arrested ... for taking her food/medical supplies.

Nice.

Bumping this thread in honour of Jenrick's failure to justify decamping to his second home in the press briefing today.
The wanker.

Thank you to the Sky journalist who pointed out the hypocrisy.
