Driving to click andcollect

herecomesthsun · 09/04/2020 17:46

We are driving to collect a weekly shop on Saturday. We live in a village and the nearest branch of Sainsbury's is about 7 miles away. I am planning on doing a print out of the items to give to my husband, over £100 worth for the family. We are isolating at home with the children and none of us have been out for over 2 weeks. Presumably there won't be a problem if the police stop him?

Also, I am hoping that it will be fine for DH to collect the shop rather than me, as I am quite vulnerable to respiratory infections, especially with all the details.

You are allowed to drive to the supermarket. There won't be an issue.

ErrolTheDragon · 09/04/2020 17:51

Of course that's fine.

user1635896324685367 · 09/04/2020 17:55

You're allowed to go out to buy food. Nobody is expecting you to stay at home and starve to death.

Didntwanttochangemyname · 09/04/2020 17:58

My nearest supermarket is 40 miles away, please be safe in the knowledge that its fine to go to the supermarket. Just try to go as little as possible.

TreeTopTim · 09/04/2020 18:00

You are allowed to go to the supermarket. Although I did see the news and the police said that it could get to the point where they are checking supermarket shops to make sure that you are buying only essentials. Now sure how fair that it.

What do you mean you are going to give your dh a print out of the items?

herecomesthsun · 09/04/2020 18:10

If you order online they send you a list of the items and this would also have the order number on, so I'll print that out (phone is a bit temperamental).

There are some little shops in the village, but I think click and collect is safer, we can get everything we want with one cashless transaction this way.

We live in an area of natural beauty that is usually heaving with visitors this time of year so we may well have police stopping cars to ask their business.

Although I am quite vulnerable healthwise I am wondering whether I would be better going than DH as I would be more careful avoiding contaminated surfaces etc and also I would cope better with being stopped by police.

OP posts:
StoorieHoose · 09/04/2020 18:20

You don't touch many surfaces when doing click and collect. You drive up, they give you your receipt through the car window, they bring out your shopping, you get out the car open your boot and out the shopping in. You touch the crates and that's it. Wear gloves and dispose of once you have finished

Bimbleboo · 09/04/2020 18:21

Done it every week of lockdown. Don’t worry you’ll be fine. Never been stopped and wouldn’t worry if we were as it’s legitimate travel.

Allgirlmum · 09/04/2020 18:25

It's fine it's food shopping 🤷

bulletjournalbilly · 09/04/2020 18:25

How on earth will the police have capacity to check supermarket trolley's, local shop baskets AND check cars are doing essential journeys AND check parks for crowds AND check you're only doing 1 outdoor exercise a day AND do their day to day?

The media has gone fucking mad

TheGreatWave · 09/04/2020 18:25

7 miles to get to the supermarket isn't that far, he'll be fine, especially alone in the car. 2 adults 3 children and a dog is a different matter and the 'just going shopping guv' might not be believed.

Wingedharpy · 09/04/2020 18:29

Ha, ha, ha@herecomesthsun

It sounds like you have as much confidence in your DH's ability not to bring the plague home, as I have in mine😀

Deep breath and then release him into the wild.

You can't see what he's doing so try not to let your imagination/knowledge run wild.

I just remind DH about what to be careful of as he goes.

I'm in a similar position to you in that I'm the shielder and he's the "carer", though, in reality, I'm far more able than him.

In what way would your DH not cope with being stopped by the police?

Grobagsforever · 09/04/2020 18:31

Jesus OP what newspaper have you been reading that makes you think there will be a problem?

As for the bat shit crazy poster who thinks police will be checking for essentials - STEP AWAY FROM THE DAILY MAIL

herecomesthsun · 09/04/2020 18:39

Police are very likely to be checking that people aren't driving around for a jolly. We are in a National Park and it is in the local papers that there will be checks.

DH doesn't cope well with being stopped by police etc and usually if he is with me I do all the talking. He would get very panicky. He just would. I think some men find that sort of thing very challenging.

OP posts:
Esca · 09/04/2020 18:45

At my click and collect, they ask that I stay in the car and they load the shopping into the boot in carrier bags. It's by far the least stressful shopping method IMO.

To be fair to the OP, I worried the first time about being stopped by the police, but that's because my mother was frothing about nonsense she'd read on Facebook. It'll be grand.

perniciousdot · 09/04/2020 18:50

Why do you need a print out of the order?

This weird fuckery that Mumsnet seems to be giving people has to stop.

You are allowed to get your groceries.

ErrolTheDragon · 09/04/2020 18:50

Although I did see the news and the police said that it could get to the point where they are checking supermarket shops to make sure that you are buying only essentials. Now sure how fair that it.

Radio news just now, Westminster has clarified that you can buy anything that the shops have in stock. So don't worry about what some busybody may think is 'essential' or not,

perniciousdot · 09/04/2020 18:51

Eh? 'Some men'? What?

He is a man child, clearly.

Esca · 09/04/2020 18:53

Ah, I see that he's properly anxious. If you don't think facing his fear will help longterm, going yourself to click and collect is probably the lowest risk version of shopping there is at the moment.

Wingedharpy · 09/04/2020 18:55

Just remind him the that the police are doing their job.
It's not personal.
Is he a drug baron?

HelloTerrance · 09/04/2020 19:03

It was on the local news here tonight that the police may check your shopping. I presume to check that there are essentials as well as frivolous items it you haven't just been on a random shopping spree.

I think it's a scare tactic more than actually going to happen.

Poppi89 · 09/04/2020 19:53

I went with my DD to get a click and collect today. I didn't need a print out because if you are stopped then you say you are going shopping. My DD stays in the car while I load my shopping into the boot.

I think I know what you mean about your husband not wanting to get stopped by the police. I was at work standing at the side of the road waiting for children to cross and a police van drove past and started and then turned around and I was already annoyed and I had to tell my self they are just doing their job. Some do have a reputation for being power hungry but most aren't.

As I mentioned just upthread , the news (bbc R4) reported this but that Westminster have clarified that shops can sell anything they have in stock. So you're obviously allowed to buy it.

IamHyouweegobshite · 09/04/2020 21:44

I have ordered compost and veg seeds from b&q, it's click and collect, but not my local one, the next town along, 8 miles or so. My dh is a keyworker and is unable to collect on his way home, because the shop shuts early, and he's working over Easter too. I'm worried that I'll be stopped, only left the house once to drive and collect food last week. I know it doesn't sound essential, but we're making a veg plot.

Grobagsforever · 10/04/2020 09:44

@helloterrance

Then I suggest you report that particular journalist for fake news.

LOCAL NEWS from tin-pot journalists quoting Karen on Facebook is not a reliable source.

Also do ppl understand we NEED a functioning economy to get back to after this? That won't happen if we're only to buy bread and one apple person.
