why is the range still open? i don't bear a grudge - but they're not really a supermarket are they?

Because they sell DIY, toiletries and pet food maybe

dementedpixie · 09/04/2020 16:44

There was a queue for my local one the other day. Probably all buying compost! I was going to a different food shop that had no queue

TeaMilkNoSugarThanks · 09/04/2020 16:45

The Range in our town has equipped itself with a fridge and a big pile of bread so it can claim to be selling 'essentials' as well as lawn sprinklers, grouting, pinboards, giant photos of the Brooklyn Bridge for your en suite, and other necessities.

Runkle · 09/04/2020 16:45

They sell what is deemed as essentials. Simples.

SymphonyofShadows · 09/04/2020 16:46

Ours has an Iceland in it, it’s a bit random

dementedpixie · 09/04/2020 16:47

I'm glad I was open last week as ds has been getting a lot of work from school involving sketching so I got him a sketch pad and drawing pencils from there as they have a good art department. They also sell cleaning products, toiletries, etc

PeacockPies · 09/04/2020 16:55

Ours has got an Iceland inside it.

I had to listen to a speech when I went. When you get to the front there was a woman with a clipboard and she had a little podium and you have to stand in a cross and then she said 'I'm going to read you something' and then she read a little speech which started 'thank you for shopping at The Range for your essential purchases' and said that we had to include an essential purchase in our shopping.

I'd gone for a sketch book for my year 11 who had been told by school that she had to continue her art coursework at home but her portfolio is at school but they didn't ask me why it was essential.

R1R2 · 09/04/2020 16:57

The Range are still open because it is ran by cunts who think of nothing but money hence why half the shops are falling to pieces.

purpleme12 · 09/04/2020 16:59

Or range has got loads of food in frozen, tins etc etc. It's also got pet food in. Those are essential so it does qualify yes

TheGinGenie · 09/04/2020 16:59

Mine also has Iceland (or could be the same one as other posters)

Elieza · 09/04/2020 17:35

The owners clearly only care about profits and not human lives.

PleasantVille · 09/04/2020 17:37

There's no rule that only supermarkets can open, where have you got that from.

PicsInRed · 09/04/2020 17:44

I guess if your toilet breaks, and you can fix it yourself, fair's fair to be able to buy the supplies? More than just basic food is essential to a plumbed, heated, lit way of life.

Presumably lockdown didn't require reversion to Doomsday standards of habitation... which still involved trade in tools

Elieza · 09/04/2020 22:09

@PleasantVille non essential shops were to close. I don’t think it was only is Scotland I think it was I’m wide.

I hardly think the purchase of a new duvet cover and clock or something similar is sufficient reason for the range to stay open, even if they do have 1% of their goods or somesuch that are food.

dementedpixie · 09/04/2020 22:18

I would say it counts as a hardware store as it sells DIY goods. It also sells pet stuff and cleaning products/toiletries. There is a long list of stores that can stay open.

Supermarkets and other food shops

• Medical services (such as dental surgeries, opticians and audiology clinics, physiotherapy clinics, chirpody and podiatry clinics, and other professional vocational medical services)

• Pharmacies and chemists, including non-dispensing pharmacies

• Petrol stations

• Bicycle shops

• Hardware shops and equipment, plant and tool hire

• Veterinary surgeries and pet shops

• Agricultural supplies shops

• Corner shops and newsagents

• Off-licences and licenced shops selling alcohol, including those within breweries

• Laundrettes and dry cleaners

• Post offices

• Vehicle rental services

• Car garages and MOT services

• Car parks

• High street banks, building societies, short-term loan providers, credit unions and cash points

• Storage and distribution facilities, including delivery drop off points where they are on the premises of any of the above businesses

• Public toilets

• Shopping centres may stay open but only units of the types listed above may trade

Elieza · 10/04/2020 10:17

That’s true. I forgot it sold hardware. It’s not somewhere I’d buy that from right enough but they are allowed to remain open.

Cheeryandmerry · 10/04/2020 10:19

Ours has a large Iceland in it and it’s also been useful to pick up cleaning products and toiletries there.

Jammies · 10/04/2020 10:33

and then she read a little speech which started 'thank you for shopping at The Range for your essential purchases' and said that we had to include an essential purchase in our shopping.

I think it’s safe to say they know they’re not an essential shop.

PicsInRed · 10/04/2020 12:40

It sells both essential items as well as nasty, pointless tat, just like the supermarkets, petrol stations and chemists.

Shall we just shut all stores to prevent the acquisition of tat? Perhaps have the police patrol stores to identify and ban identified tacky rubbish? Close our ports to the import of garish kitsch?

That'll show the coronavirus who's boss. 😂
