BBQs

Acceptable at the moment or not? The weather is lovely and a neighbour had one this eve and it is making me want one. I've heard the odd person say it isn't ok..so would like a broader opinion please!

Why wouldn't it be ok? If you are having a bbq in your garden with your own household, I can't see that you are breaking any rules. Even if there was no C-19 I bet there would be lots of bbq's this weekend.

daisypond · 08/04/2020 20:44

It’s fine.

LuckyMarmiteLover · 08/04/2020 20:44

We had one and it was lovely - a bit of normality in a mad world.

Normandy144 · 08/04/2020 20:48

Of course it's fine. We had one last weekend in the warm weather. Perfectly fine. Obviously if you're inviting people from outside your household then it's not.

Hugglespuffed · 08/04/2020 20:49

Thanks all. I just saw a comment on another thread where someone was annoyed at their neighbours having a bbq. This isn't a thread about a thread though- I saw one comment on a local facebook group..I'm not sure why people aren't happy with it so I just wanted to gather opinions before I piss of me neighbours 😀

It's only a legal problem if you invite people from outside your household to join you.

Patterjack · 08/04/2020 20:50

We had a bbq tonight, absolutely no issue that I can see.

user1635896324685367 · 08/04/2020 20:51

If you had a tiny garden and/or sent smoke billowing everywhere that tends to be what pisses people off from a social perspective.

And some people just don't like anyone doing anything remotely nice or fun at the moment, even if it's safe and legal.

AnnoyedByAlfieBear · 08/04/2020 20:52

Our local council have advised against bbqs as the smoke could aggravate the breathing difficulties related to covid-19.

Hugglespuffed · 08/04/2020 20:55

It is a big garden, neighbours up and down the road but no one behind as it backs on to woodland area.

There’s a serious respiratory virus killing people in this country. Many gardens are small and cities densely populated. Why are people having BBQs and lighting fires? It seems a tad idiotic to not consider the impact on those suffering with the virus or needing their lungs in good form to fight it in the coming weeks. www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2020/apr/08/from-vitamin-c-to-breathing-exercises-doctors-on-what-you-should-really-do-for-your-health-right-now

I’ve been symptomatic for 28 days and suffering with terrible asthma despite a strong steroid inhaler. Smoke is very irritating to the lungs and set off asthma quite badly. My ten year old is also suffering but isn’t asthmatic so has just been prescribed steroid and ventolin inhalers.

It’s mad anyone with a brain would consider this.

maxicheddar · 08/04/2020 21:18

Totally agree with giving up BBQs for the sake of people with the virus or other breathing issues. My DH is quite ill and short of breath with some lurgy or other, and asthmatic and smoke is the last thing he needs. Same will apply for many, many others.

Especially when the weather is so hot that having to keep windows makes it unbearably hot or stuffy inside.

If you are lucky enough to live well away from people and the smoke wont drift toward them then that's a bit different but I would just give it a miss right now as you never know who is concerned about the effects of smoke and its another stress people can do without.

Our neighbours already have the occasional bonfire at the moment so I am dreading the possibility of a weekend of a hundred BBQs in a populated area with postage stamp gardens :(

Please just don't do it until this is over.

missyB1 · 08/04/2020 21:22

We have them all year round in rain snow whatever - I’m married to a South African. We will light the braai (bbq) tomorrow, but we use smokeless charcoal called heat beads.

Siameasy · 08/04/2020 21:25

We have a gas one and use it to cook dinner in summer. Definitely!

Hugglespuffed · 08/04/2020 21:30

@ShastaBeast and @maxicheddar noted, thank you both. Will not do one until this is over 😊 hope you all stay well.

We put a griddle pan over our gas hob & had an indoor ‘bbq’ at the weekend.

Used picnic ware & made burgers, halloumi kebabs, veggie sausages, salad. Used up all sorts of odd n ends.

We ate in our small yard. Cheered us all up.

SussEggsRoyale · 08/04/2020 21:35

I don't know about your neighbours but I've been a lot LESS irritated by neighbour garden stuff lately. Loud kids, dogs barking, BBQ smoke etc. Everyone's stuck at home and the garden can be an area to help people and animals cope. We're all out in our gardens so there is bound to be more disruptions and noise etc.

vera99 · 08/04/2020 21:52

It's as much about optics as anything. Nhs staff are facing unspeakable horrors on a nightly basis and risking their lives whilst other segments of the population are sunning themselves and seemingly having a party. I feel it's best to show some solemnity and respect in public spaces and that includes overlooked gardens.

flowers12 · 08/04/2020 22:29

I'm currently isolating with symptoms and my neighbours had a bonfire tonight which really affected my breathing and increased my anxiety. I would definitely ask everyone to not have bbqs/ bonfires whilst this virus is going around as it's scary enough without having to deal with smoke etc.

PrincessConsueIaBananaHammock · 08/04/2020 22:36

Is it fuck.

Guess what? NHS workers like a BBQ as much as the next person and shock!horror! they've been having them themselves.

Also most of them couldn't give a flying shit as to what people do (as long as they follow the guidelines) or be so petty and obnoxious to deny everyone else every single bit of normalcy or even happiness in this absolutely shit situation.

If you want to forego everything and anything that might make you happy, or give you some enjoyment, fine do your thing. But it's YOUR thing.

SussEggsRoyale · 08/04/2020 22:38

Oh dear. Then don't look in mine. Solemnity and respect are often in very short supply. Grin

H1978 · 08/04/2020 22:39

We had one last Sunday but the silence around us was eerie because normally they’d be a lot of noise on a sunny weekend but still it’s good people are staying home

chocolateisavegetable · 08/04/2020 22:40

Why are people having BBQs

Some of us have gas BBQs!

Greggers2017 · 08/04/2020 22:44

NHS worker here, I work in substance misuse and DP is a probation officer. Both of us still working, still seeing people.
We had a BBQ this evening. We're working are arses off, putting our lives on the line everyday. We need something good and our kids need something fun. Our garden is large, we asked the neighbours if they minded they didn't. We had a bloody lovely time.

Schuyler · 08/04/2020 22:50

Fuck me, now you can’t even lie in your own garden catching some sun rays without being considered as not showing respect!
