Is this ok or not? I don't even know any more

My mum is dropping some food off for me tomorrow as she managed to get a click and collect order at sainsbury's so did my shopping as well as hers, to save us both going to the supermarket.

Is it OK if I go down to chat to her (obviously from a distance) when she drops it off? Or does she just have to drop it at the doorstep and I don't open the door?

If she’s 2 metres away there’s nothing wrong with a very quick chat...but please don’t turn it that thread where poor OP’s neighbour and his mum shouted at each other for half an hour every evening.

I stay and have a quick chat with my parents from a distance. Dad is in the shielded group and I am doing their shopping. Dad has terminal cancer and might not be around much longer so these little chats are really important to us.

DD drops off the food to my 86 year old Aunt, and our friends in their early 80s. She always drops the food, rings the bell and goes to the other side of the drive. They have a 10 minute chat before leaving, as they see no-one.

Frompcat · 08/04/2020 14:13

OK so sounds like it would probably OK.

It’s fine.

I have been freaked out by threads on here saying you can't talk to your neighbours if they're in their gardens

Good replies here! It's fine to talk to your mum from a distance

Some people on here are following a stricter lockdown than ordered by the government and get angry when people are obeying the actual rules.

NotEverythingIsBlackandwhite · 08/04/2020 14:19

It is absolutely fine.

I sat on my friends driveway at the weekend with a glass of prosecco. She sat on her doorstep with a glass of Baileys. We had a good catch up and then I went home.

You can have a chat to your mum. Just keep the 2m distance.

Just because people say things, doesn't make it true. Think rationally about what the risk is if you stay more than two metres apart and just have a chat for a few minutes. Probably none and certainly less than going to the supermarket, which we're allowed to do.

I took some shopping to my mum at the weekend and sat in her garden a few metres away and had a chat and a cup of tea. It was good for both of us and I'm confident that there was no risk to either of us.

Myfriendanxiety · 08/04/2020 15:07

If you are going anyway to drop off shopping then it’s fine to have a quick chat from 2m apart.

It is not ok to arrange to meet someone, or just go to someone’s house for a chat, even if you stay 2m apart because it’s non-essential travel.

Totally, but then if I'm walking down the street on my daily walk, or on the way back from getting food or whatever, and I see a neighbour in her garden, can we then not chat from a 2m distance?

Yes I would say this is fine.
