Potentially cancer not seen due to Covid 19

I’m posting here for help for a dear friend.
Friend has found a lump, she attended. She was seen despite the C19 issues. Dr examined and said lump needed further exploration and referred to local hospital. Friend was contacted by local hospital specific cancer unit. Told she would need to ring to schedule appointment. This has all happened in the space of a few days. In that time lump has gotten bigger and is painful to touch. She called to make appointment. The person who answered her call was very unhelpful. Told friend that they were not making appointments at the moment and friend could “try to be seen elsewhere”. The person then told friend her case isn’t urgent. But if not urgent why the swift referral from GP. Friend explained she was very concerned as lump is getting worse, but the person on the phone cut her off and just told her she will not be seen.

My friend is very frightened. I have no idea what to advise or how to help her. Can anyone give me any suggestions? She can go back to her GP, but I’m not sure what further help the GP can offer.

your poor friend, she absolutely need seen. I work in this area and my trust are still seeing red flag referrals, clinics are smaller but everyone with a new lump is being seen.
She should recontact her GP in the first instance and explain what happened re the appointment. They should be able to help.

Tell your friend to contact her gp again. But very rapid growth and pain over the course of a few days sounds like an infection rather than cancer. So may actually be good news.

She should absolutely go back to GP for clarity.

Perhaps the referral sent to the clinic was not clear on the urgency. I'm not sure what information is sent over. But if it is supposed to be an urgent referral the GP should be able to phone the clinic themselves to clarify why an appointment hasn't been arranged

Thank you so much you have all been really helpful. It’s such a difficult situation. Thank you so much for the advice.
