No Lockdown Review Next Week?

Just saw this line in an article posted on the Guardian today:

"No 10 said last night that there would be no review of the curbs next week as promised by Johnson when he introduced them three weeks ago"

I know this was expected, but there doesn't seem to be any particular fanfare abut it, rather it's just nestled into a vaguely related article. I thought it would be bigger news if they decided to extend the lockdown?

Watching the news this morning the government spokesman being interviewed would not answer the question of whether the review would take place, despite being asked repeatedly. It's not going to happen.

It's 5 days away yet, a lot will happen between now and then

Kuponut · 08/04/2020 10:31

People didn't expect a lifting after 3 weeks like the sanctimonious faux-outraged posts on here are claiming - but there are a lot of people, like myself, managing this by mentally breaking it up into chunks of "cope with 3 weeks" > review and expect to feel down for a bit > "cope with the next 3 weeks" and repeat. It's a hell of a lot easier psychologically to take yourself to the next 3 week checkpoint and then on from that, than to deal with "indefinite" outright.

Not to mention that there's then the feeling of people being lied to if the review doesn't happen, and right now we need people to feel like they can trust the government if you want them to comply with it - there needs to be some form of the 3 weekly check on if the restrictions need to still keep going - even if it's just an announcement in the daily briefing that, "yep, looked at the numbers and we need to carry on for another 3 week block before we review again" and not some kind of Olympic lockdown opening ceremony big deal over it.

While I don't think many people expected the lockdown to be lifted on the 13th, I believe it was reasonable to expect a public briefing regarding the review, whereby we would be given an explanation of the rationale and the evidence which informed it. This article implies the lack of formal review is due to Boris Johnson being in hospital and Dominic Raab being unable to make significant decisions in his absence. While I'm sure there are daily reviews going on behind the scene, cancelling the official review date with no discussion around the implications doesn't exactly engender much confidence in the current government set up.

It's only the 8th. I wasn't expecting to hear anything yet.

Farahilda · 08/04/2020 11:29

The law requires review every 21 days

I suspect the Guardian is garbling 'expect no change' with 'no review'

Myimaginarypenguinhasfleas · 08/04/2020 13:08

The Independent is reporting that the review has been postponed.

TalkingIntoTheEther · 08/04/2020 13:32

It isn't that we are expecting information today coachman, its that they have cancelled the review on the 13th.

This is what the guardian has published today: "No 10 said last night that there would be no review of the curbs next week as promised by Johnson when he introduced them three weeks ago"

I was thinking we may hear something towards end of this week or maybe after the weekend. It's only Wednesday today and it may be Sunday/Monday before a decision is made , we won't get notice as such as it was decided at 8pm on the Monday regarding lockdown it may be same again .
I think they will say a week or 2 extension and then it may be relaxed slightly. We will have to wait and see I suppose.

thegcatsmother · 08/04/2020 13:43

I'm not expecting to be out of lockdown until June probably. I think 3 weeks, then another 3 weeks is easier for some to deal with than a straight 12 week lockdown. If the elderly have been asked to self isolate for 12 weeks, and the exams have been cancelled, which is a huge deal, then we are looking at least til June if not longer.

Thethiniceofanewday · 08/04/2020 14:38

As a PP mentioned, it is written into the legislation that there must be a reiview so No 10 is on sketchy ground saying it will be cancelled. I can’t see the problem with “we reviewed it and we conclude that the measures need to remain in place.”
