People bored of social distancing

Just a moan really. My household is adhering to lockdown. When we were “all in it together”, it feels okay. Necessary and a small thing I can do to help in this horror story.

But yesterday and today, my neighbours on all 3 sides have independently had friends round to visit. It’s so infuriating to think that this will drag on a whole lot longer if people break the rules. One of these neighbours is a cardiac nurse FFS. It just all feels so helpless, so pointless to be the 1 in 4 who stays in, if 3 in 4 aren’t. Add to that today I go to my local park for a run (and yes, I stay at least 2m away and don’t spit!), and there’s a group of 6-8 teenage friends sat sharing a spliff.

Anyway, rant over.

It's very quiet where I am and I live on a terraced street that is usually quite busy. There's a grocers opposite me that's busier than usual, but they are serving from the door and everyone keeps their distance when queuing.

I've been avoiding the park where I normally walk/socialise my dog, but walked past yesterday to visit the post office. Was upset to see people not keeping distance and acting like normal. Sad, but nothing I can do about, just glad now I trusted my instincts to do my dog walk elsewhere now.

CheriLittlebottom · 07/04/2020 18:40

My street wants to clap for Boris tonight. With pans and wooden spoons and music.

I'd like to socially distance myself to the fucking moon.

Connie222 · 07/04/2020 18:42

Just to add, It was the neighbour who called Dh a rude cunt, not Dh shouting at the neighbour.

LaurieFairyCake · 07/04/2020 18:44

Luckily I live in London

That didn't vote Tory much...
I anticipate no clapping this evening

Stellaris22 · 07/04/2020 18:46

Very Labour area where I am, really hoping for no clapping tonight here either.

Randomschoolworker19 · 07/04/2020 18:53

I'm not sure I understand the politics. I'm an ardent Labour supporter and voted for Corbin over Boris because I would never vote Tory, but given the current situation that's all gone out of the window where I'm concerned.

I'm really worried for Boris and fear he might die. I really hope not!

CheriLittlebottom · 07/04/2020 19:02

I'm not particularly keen on Boris, don't hate him either. Think he's a bit of a chancer. Like him more than I liked Corbyn though.

I've just had enough of fucking clapping.

Bimbleboo · 07/04/2020 19:05

@ReallyLoveChickens that was literally my first thought on seeing her!

Chloemol · 07/04/2020 19:06

They have worked out figures based on 75% complying and the other 25% thinking it doesn’t apply to them. I look at it as those 25% being incapable and selfish, if more like 90% adhered we would help the nhs more, and stop a possible full lockdown. But you just can’t tell some people

PuffinShop · 07/04/2020 19:06

Why would people socializing make the whole thing last longer? Surely the more people that get sick quick means that it will all be over sooner?

Exactly! A lot of people seem to have got completely the wrong end of the stick here.

This will not drag on longer if the disease spreads faster. The faster it spreads, the faster this will all be over. BUT the theory is that if it spreads too quickly then the death rate will be higher due to stretched resources.

People following the rules are not making sure this will all be over sooner, you are making sure it will last longer in an attempt to lower the final death toll.

AgentCooper · 07/04/2020 19:09

I know what you mean OP. Next door’s adult daughter has been over loads. I miss my mum and dad so, so much and it hurts to see my mum keeping it together when we video chat and she sees my two year old DS who she and my dad normally have 3 days a week. Seeing other folk not bothering is really upsetting.

heidihigh · 07/04/2020 19:11

I have only seen one house on my street have visitors round since this all begin. Interestingly, the daughter that visits her parents in my street is a nurse Hmm

Taddda · 07/04/2020 19:11

So basically ignore the 'rules', killing tens of thousands more than necessary so this will be over quicker?

Yeah, fuck em all, lets get back to the pub hey!

Idiot...

Taddda · 07/04/2020 19:25

Why would people socializing make the whole thing last longer? Surely the more people that get sick quick means that it will all be over sooner?

It will make the 'Lockdown' last longer because it seems people are unable to keep from socially distancing themselves from anything....

If people were more considerate of this where I live I could get us out of the house for a walk....but I can't, as they're not...if anything they'll put further restrictions in place to stop the daily exercise....I'm at a stage where if they did it wouldn't affect us anyway because we can't get out of our front door without bumping into the 'gatherings in the sun'....

I bet you someone will put a bbq out if the weather keeps up....

aWeaponCalledtheWord · 07/04/2020 19:29

my neighbour’s daughter seems to have decided lockdown doesn’t apply to her and merrily pops in and out every couple of days.

my neighbour works with disabled children. i don’t even have the words.

Ilikefresias · 07/04/2020 19:34

Do you think other countries have this problem too?

Isitmyimagination · 07/04/2020 19:35

The faster it’s all over .....? Really? How many more times - if we all get it over a short period of time then the NHS cannot cope, therefore a much larger percentage will die. If we control the spread via social distancing and relatively relaxed conditions (see other countries) more people will be left alive in a year or so.

ifonly4 · 07/04/2020 19:39

Someone on another thread was asking how you report people clearly not adhering to the restrictions. Apparently there is an online form, so if you think something is unreasonable, consider reporting them.

It's not fair on those that are adhering to the restrictions, and also those that have to work and come into contact with people everyday and run the increased risk of contracting it over people working at home. I obviously don't have to comment on what the doctors and nurses are going through, and how we should limit that pressure and experience for them.

StCharlotte · 07/04/2020 19:40

I haven't been out for ages so haven't seen much but next door's adult children are serial offenders and won't be told. She's a bloody paramedic!!!

BubblyBarbara · 07/04/2020 19:44

Don’t feel too bad, if you see neighbours pointlessly socialising or having relatives round, just think they are more likely to end up in a serious medical pickle.

IgnoranceIsStrength · 07/04/2020 19:46

Very similar experience in Tesco to Fanny. Loads of people going against the arrows, popping back into aisles, grown 'children' shopping with their mums, people, blocking aisles with trolleys. Got back home and have decided I would rather starve than face that again.

Hercwasonaroll · 07/04/2020 19:53

Some of you are so freaking sanctimonious, I bet you're the ones reporting people on Facebook because they sat on a bench.

The risk of catching it while out shopping or walking is TINY.

People popping out is fine. You are allowed outside fgs.

IvinghoeBeacon · 07/04/2020 19:53

I had to go to both the hospital and the supermarket today and everyone was very considerate and compliant. Everywhere very quiet other than a few people running or riding bikes. I live just outside London

Hercwasonaroll · 07/04/2020 19:55

As for popping back down aisles, do you have any idea how easy it is to miss items when shopping for others? I would keep going back down aisles to pick up stuff I've forgotten.

Let's not forget 3 weeks ago most of us were gadding about without a care. Now we'd shoot our neighbours if they so much as cough.

AsMuchUseAsAMarzipanDildo · 07/04/2020 20:03

When I say drag on longer, I mean the lockdown. Sorry probably didn’t make myself clear. As in - if people don’t follow the rules, the government will see death rates climbing higher, the NHS unable to cope and will have tighter lockdown for longer. Whereas if we follow the rules, admissions and deaths are at a predictable/stable rate, they’re likely to begin to relax lockdown.
