Hi, my husband is a nurse and I just wanted to ask what other people are doing now to protect themselves from the virus! I've heard the best thing is to take your uniform off in work and put it in a pillow case so you can throw straight in the wash. Then change again when you get home, are most people showering too? And washing the clothes you had changed in to? Just want to make sure we're not being too ocd and see what other people are doing! 😘

is there any option to shower at work so that there is no way of taking the virus into the community?

Not a pharmacist, but working in one (so not as much direct contact as your DH). Washing my hands before leaving work, sanitizing hands before touching car and again before I touch front door handle. Taking clothes off in kitchen and putting in washing machine. Again washing hands and lower arms. Just showering as normal. If your DH is happy to do what you're saying, then go for it - it's not just about protecting others, it's about keeping our loved ones safe.

I work in a supermarket, not a hospital but this is my routine. Leave shoes in car, walk up the path in socks. Wash hands thoroughly. Go straight out to the shed and get black bin liner. Go to bathroom, strip off and put every item of clothing in bin liner. Shower. Dry myself and dress in clean clothes (ok pyjamas) Take bin liner out to the shed where my washing machine is and put everything into wash. Come back into house, wash hands again. Go round with bleach spray cleaning everything I have touched. Wash hands again.

We are leaving uniform at work and putting the parts needing a wash straight in. DH can shower at work but I can’t so I shower at home as soon as I get in. Then I wipe all door handles and light switches. (Not medical personnel)

Randomschoolworker19 · 07/04/2020 16:07

Work or food shopping I do the same as PP.

Strip as soon as I'm through the door. Scrub down in the shower, clothes and towel in the washer then I wash and wipe down things like my keys, phone, ID badge, wallet etc.

He should have guidance from his trust for this.
In our trust advice is non covid pt contact change out of uniform at work then wash uniform separately at highest temp allowed for garment. Wash hands after.
Covid pt contact wear scrubs laundered by the hospital and shower at work before leaving. Obviously full PPE also.

Siameasy · 07/04/2020 16:23

Oh yeah I give my phone a good wipe too

CakeHoleinRoof · 07/04/2020 16:24

Jennie murray said washing uniform isn't essential as it doesn't live long on fabrics? Or something like that.

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 07/04/2020 16:27

I don't wear a uniform but do work for the NHS.
We had instructions to keep our phone in a plastic bag during the day, and remove this on leaving work, as well as wiping.
There was a suggestion to only have one pair or work shoes and one work bag, and to keep these in a box by the door, minimising their contact with other stuff. Wiping door handles, gear stick and steering wheel in car, and front door access point.

I am a nurse, some covid contact but not everyday (as far as we know, not all our patients as tested), no access to a shower at work (we don't actually have access to a changing room so are getting changed in the one staff toilet). I am putting uniform in pillow case, putting it on 60 degree wash at home. I usually travel on public transport so get changed from those clothes when I get in too, and only wear those jeans and top to go to and from work.

TheQueef · 07/04/2020 16:35

DC is a supermarket worker.
Uniform comes off in the car on the drive and he chucks it in the hot wash.
He's going through Sketchers and eczema cream like mad.
Washes his hands, arms and face outside (there is hot water) and gets straight in the shower.
He said I wouldn't believe how many people cough and splutter at him especially if shelf stacking.

goldpartyhat · 07/04/2020 17:57

DH changed at work and put uniform in a pillowcase, and took a shower. Then came home changed clothes that went straight into washing machine, and he had another shower. We have a vulnerable child.

Charlottejade89 · 07/04/2020 18:26

NHS worker, I change at work and put my uniform in a carrier bag, chuck it all straight in the wash (trainers as well) and then have a hot shower and wash my hair. Use anti bac spray or wipes to clean anything ive touched afterwards

SuperlativeScrubs · 07/04/2020 18:38

Our trust has made changing mandatory. Come to work in plain clothes and change, then change out before leaving. You will be stopped and made to go change if caught leaving in uniform without a decent excuse.

Echo08 · 07/04/2020 22:40

Community carer.Uniform off straight on 60 wash soon i get in also work shoes by front door .Wipe work phone and my phone stays out of sight in the car i don't touch it at all until i get home .

Echo08 · 07/04/2020 22:41

Meant to add straight in the shower as soon as uniform off .

twighlightsparkly · 07/04/2020 22:44

Thanks for all your replies! All really good advice. He can't shower at work so drives straight home & into the shower. We haven't been as thorough with shoes tho so need to start being careful with that. He's not in contact directly with Covid patient but it's still worrying! Thank you xx
