Can I move in with parents after self isolating for 14 days?

Just wanting a bit of advice and educating based on my situation -

My parents are in the high risk category for COVID-19 (Dad has prostate cancer, Mum has COPD) so have been self isolating for the past few weeks. Sister has moved out and lived elsewhere during this time as she's a key worker so comes into contact with a lot of people. It's worth mentioning that my dad is also my mum's full time carer.

Last week dad received a call to say they have an surgery appointment available to remove his cancer today (op was this morning), he'll stay overnight then will come home but is unable to do so much as pick something up from the floor. I know my mum won't be able to do everything he usually does (cook, clean etc) due to her disability.

My question is, if I self isolate for 14 days from when I last went out and don't show symptoms, would I then be able to go over and care for them, providing I continue self isolating with them and don't go out? The alternative is to have nurses/carers come into their home to help but this seems more risky as they will have come into contact with more people than I have. Just not sure if it would be classed as a non-essential outing or an unnecessary journey?

I’d class that as a medical reason and do it. Hope your dad’s op goes well. X

Likethebattle · 07/04/2020 15:03

I think so as any symptoms would show up.

daisypond · 07/04/2020 15:05

I think that’s fine - caring for a vulnerable person.

lyralalala · 07/04/2020 15:06

It makes far more sense then having different carers in and out each day.

How far away do they live? Can you get to their house without breaking isolation?

Fundays12 · 07/04/2020 15:06

Yes in the instance I think its fine.

Lumene · 07/04/2020 15:08

That would be classed as essential care for the vulnerable so OK

Lumene · 07/04/2020 15:08

And fingers crossed for your dad Flowers

disorganisedsecretsquirrel · 07/04/2020 15:12

Absolutely fine and really sensible especially as you are moving in. Please be careful travelling to them. If driving thing about things like petrol pumps, door handles and of course wash your hands and put all clothes in washing machine when you arrive.

Just imagine you could be touching the virus everywhere you go between theirs and yours. Hope your dad recovers soon.

I think this is fine OP.

I am currently isolating for 14 days before going to live with my parents who are at increased risk due to medical conditions.

Just be careful about items coming into your home (I am quarantining deliveries/letters for three days before handling them at all) as well as you not going to shops etc.

SirVixofVixHall · 07/04/2020 15:27

Yes, I think that is fine. We may do this with Mil if she gets to a point where she is struggling. We have all been in isolation for over three weeks here, and she has done two so far.

Scbchl · 07/04/2020 15:37

Id 100% do it. Hope your dads op goes well and he recovers quickly.

dancinguser · 07/04/2020 15:41

Thank you all for the advise, it's much appreciated and will definitely be taken on board. I have enough petrol to drive over so I think the main thing will just be door handles getting out of my block of flats.

And thanks for the well wishes for my dad, not heard anything as of yet but hoping all has gone well.

Yes definitely!

Just make sure you have definitely self-isolated as he will be very high risk after surgery. I hope he's ok x

Keepdistance · 07/04/2020 17:04

I would think it's more likely he would catch it from his surgery. So he would need to isolate.
Just to say though, we havent been out in about 4w but now come down with sore throats and nasty cough. (Though could have been from dc a few weeks before that).
I think 2-3% of cases were found to exceed either 11 or 14days.

Interesting about your mum and dad though as mine have had exactly the same (mum smoked for about 30years).

Hoping you can all stay safe, good luck
