More people with drinking problems?

The person behind me in Tesco earlier had 6 bottles of gin. Just made me wonder if more people will have drinking problems once the lockdown is behind us?

A lot of my friends are drinking every day out of boredom.

Fantasmic143 · 06/04/2020 15:22

That is what I am wondering. I am WFH and have 7up in a cup...but it could be gin / vodka and no-one would know...

Fucking hell, can't believe the amount of nosiness that's come out of this.

Theresomethingaboutdairy · 06/04/2020 15:35

Yes, lots of people I know are drinking daily/during the day now. Photographs all over social media with people with a glass in hand etc, asking via school parent WhatsApp groups what is a reasonable time to start drinking.

Kokeshi123 · 06/04/2020 15:40

I don't think it's necessarily nosy to wonder about possible increases in alcohol consumption. However, to an extent people will be just making up for not drinking in bars and restaurants.

Fantasmic143 · 06/04/2020 15:47

I will take the nosy accusation for noticing the 6 bottles of gin.

I think my other wondering really comes from concern for people in terms of their MH and whether some might drink more to get through the lockdown, depending on their circumstances.

I am sure there is more drinking in the home that would previously have occurred in pubs / bars.

I'm drinking more to get through the lockdown - well aware I'm doing so and keeping a careful eye on it. Right now it's getting through this damned situation that's the priority and I'm very careful about potential alcohol issues anyway as I have an alcoholic parent.

BeetrootRocks · 06/04/2020 16:11

Yes I think it will

Also will be hard for those who are trying to keep a lid on it, or have quit due to past issues

I do foresee issues there for sure

Chinks123 · 06/04/2020 16:15

My dad is an alcoholic and always had multiple bottles a day, but since lockdown it’s worse. His work is closed, he lives alone, and now has nothing else to keep his mind occupied. He has rung me drunk and crying every night this week.

For others who are not usually big drinkers, I’ve seen an increase in mums drinking wine on Facebook to cope with it all.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 06/04/2020 16:16

Boredom. And unable to go out and meet friends for a drink will mean more drinking indoors than before.

I thought supermarkets were limiting the amount you can buy of any one product - I had to put some wine back the other day, did the walk of shame …. and a kind man on a neighbouring till offered to buy it for me. I must look like I have issues Grin

onwheels · 06/04/2020 16:23

boredom and restlessness are the reason why i'm drinking more. i'm drinking half a bottle of wine virtually every day of the week. i am probably drinking 30 units a week for the last three weeks - usual amount is 1 bottle of wine and literally a double gin.

DH does not drink at all and seems to cope just fine.

Actionhasmagic · 06/04/2020 16:24

We aren’t drinking because I have a uti at the moment but I wish we could. I think people are drinking because it’s a coping mechanism. Also bored.

JimandWilson · 06/04/2020 16:45

We are having an alcoholic drink at teatime every day. Will adjust back to our normal intake in time but for now it's relaxing us and gives us something to look forward to at the end of another weird day.

Applejaxx · 06/04/2020 16:45

There are a lot of alcohol dependent people in the UK.

Northernsoullover · 06/04/2020 16:47

Thankfully I stopped drinking alcohol last year. Its not good for your immune system. I'd have been terrible in this situation Blush

thenightsky · 06/04/2020 16:50

One of my friends is an alcoholic (functioning, but only just). I fear she's now going to be totally out of control and may finally drink herself to death over the coming months. She normally starts on the vodka around 6pm, but from her facebook posts I'd say 12 noon these days.

Nirvana1979 · 06/04/2020 16:57

I've made a conscious decision to stop today. Its a slipperly slope drinking out of boredom.

The hangovers and anxiety are really not good, my clothes are tight and i just feel like shit tbh.

Speaking to a couple of friends who dont normally drink mid week at all are going through bottles of wine like theres no tomorrow too.

ScatteredMama82 · 06/04/2020 20:11

DH and I are drinking more than usual. When life goes back to normal, so will we.
