It's really busy near me today.

I went out to my local high street to try and do some shopping. I thought I'd go today instead of the weekend as I'm not in work, so I thought I'd leave the weekend days for people who are working Monday to Friday. I went to the high street as there are several supermarkets.

It is just like a normal day. Traffic on the roads, people everywhere. There are queues outside some shops and people wearing masks and gloves, but honestly there were as many people around as there are on a normal weekday.

I abandoned the shopping- I'll have to try again at some point though as we're starting to run low and the local convenience store is very overpriced.

It's frightening- it honestly feels like people round here have just decided to sod it.

This suggests to me that some people are no longer only going out for essentials in my area. It is quite unlikely that today, this many people have simultaneously run out of essentials and gone out shopping at the exact same time.

How can you be so sure? It's a Monday, exactly two weeks after lockdown. Maybe these people were following the same logic as you and preferred to avoid going out at the weekend. To assume that THEY were all selfish and irresponsible but YOU had good reason to be there is presumptuous on your part.

Ok, it wasn't busy, I stand corrected. I'll not bother starting a thread again.

As you wish. Fine by me, but thanks for letting us know.

cealewis · 06/04/2020 15:29

Where exactly is "here" what area are you referring to? Inner city, only large store outside of a village? All of these factor into how many people are out. We just had a sunny weekends why do you assume that people aren't looking at you and thinking, who's this person, going out for non-essentials, unlike me."

Rainbowunicat · 06/04/2020 15:31

Where did I call anyone selfish and irresponsible? I said it 'feels like people have decided to sod it' which it does. Because on all the other occasions I've been out, and spoken to family who have also been out, it has been extremely quiet. Today it is very busy.

I was not 'one of the people on the highstreet' as I didn't get out of my car, I went home.

Can people articulate why they're so adamant I'm wrong about this?

Sorry I am sure we have not been clear. People are not disagreeing with you that it might have been busy. People including me are asking you what distinguishes you (a person on the high street and part of the population you saw) and any other Tom Emily or Larry (also persons on the high street and part of the population you saw). That is the question.

IcedPurple · 06/04/2020 15:34

Saying that they had 'decided to sod it' does imply that they - unlike you - were being irresponsible. Unless you have a different definition for 'sod it'?

Namesgonenow · 06/04/2020 15:34

But the fact you didn’t leave your car makes no difference. You went to the high street as you needed things and thought it wise and useful to go. Others thought and did the exact same thing. What makes you different from these other persons? That’s the bit I just cannot grasp

The thing is - the OP cannot possibly answer rationally why she is different from every other individual who also decided to go shopping on the high street on that day st that time which establishes these people as sodding things but the OP as being non-sodding impartial observer. She cannot answer this. So all one will get is a flouncey not-posting-again or silence or being obtuse🤣

HarrietSchulenberg · 06/04/2020 15:41

Good grief, other people dare to venture outside and they're irresponsible whereas you are not.
Depending on where you live there are x number of shops open and probably 100x that number of people who need to shop in them. They can't all go on days when you're not there.

PhilCornwall1 · 06/04/2020 15:43

I said it 'feels like people have decided to sod it'

I'm sure there are many coming around to that way of thinking. It's increasing around here both with cars and people.

Lamentations · 06/04/2020 15:43

It's not snidey to point out that you are also one of the people out and about. A bit like when we drive a car but complain about the traffic.

Fluffiest · 06/04/2020 15:48

I can think of a few reasons why the high street might be suddenly busier:

  • like you, people avoided the weekend to give room for those who have to shop then
  • Monday is the start of the week so people might be in a get things done mindframe
  • More businesses have now had to close and go into furlough, meaning more people are available to go shopping
cinammonbuns · 06/04/2020 15:53

You are exactly the same as all of them. I’m sure if you asked those people they would say they went to do their essential shopping.

So why do you think they decide to sod it but you didn’t?

yearinyearout · 06/04/2020 15:53

Very quiet where I live (small market town). I've just been out to walk the dog. Nobody's queueing outside the supermarkets and only saw a few people walking up the high street.
