Where is the TV footage inside UK hospitals?

I've seen loads of clips from Italian hospitals where TV crew have been allowed in hospital wards and interviews with frontline staff saying how shit things are / how overwhelmed they feel etc.

But where is the UK footage?

I don't want to be morbid and actually look inside the hospitals seeing sick people. It's more those images really bring it home to people that this shit is real and it's happening on your doorstep and hopefully people will stay at home.

I understand why there's no TV crews but there were also so many stories, account from doctors on YouTube and Twitter, WhatsApp conversations about how terrible it was. Hospitals bursting at seams...we don't seem to have that here and I'm sure it would be around now that it would manifest as those Italian accounts were two to three weeks ago.

automa · 06/04/2020 09:45

FFS I knew some "idiots" like LovingLola would think I would love watching sick ill people on TV. Of you actually read my op I specifically said that I find that it really helps sends the message home that is is serious and people adhere to the guidelines of staying at home more.

Exactly, TheFaerieQueene. Plus surely the drs and nurses putting themselves at risk every day with inadequate PPE would be pretty pissed off to see some of it used on camera crew. Unless the camera crew were willing to do it without PPE, which seems unlikely (and foolish).
I don’t understand why anyone expects to see footage from a ward. It would be a completely stupid thing to do for many reasons.

GreyishDays · 06/04/2020 09:48

I think it might make it a bit more real for those struggling to stay the fuck indoors.

Sirzy · 06/04/2020 09:48

If you where in intensive care wokld you want a tv camera in your face?

If you where an nurse trying your best to save lives and at the same time stay safe would you want unnecessary cameras in the way?

If your loved one was dying and you weren’t allowed near would you be happy for them to be filmed?

nellodee · 06/04/2020 09:49

We do have stories about staff being told they will be fired if they complain to the media about lack of ppe.

NotEverythingIsBlackandwhite · 06/04/2020 09:51

My next door neighbour is a nurse and she isn't overwhelmed or really busy at all. They emptied hospitals of as many patients as possible and cancelled non-emergency/urgent/ elective surgery. There are some nurses who don't have a lot to do at present.

The hospitals aren't full of CV patients. I don't know how many there are now but last week we were told there were 9,000 CV patients in hospitals representing about 1 in 10 beds. If they are emptying beds but not doing elective surgery, it stands to reason that there are plenty of hospital beds that are empty.

Poppinjay · 06/04/2020 09:53

So glad I'm not isolated in the same household as someone like @LovingLola.

It's very reasonable to ask this question. The nasty responses are unnecessary.

The responses re protecting patient privacy are helpful.

I think too many people still think this is a storm in a teacup and they can just carry on as usual. It's worth considering what more could be done to drive this message home.

tigger1001 · 06/04/2020 09:55

I deliberately have not watched any footage of Italian hospitals. I think these poor people deserve dignity and don't need their worst moments filmed. Doctors don't need to clamber over film crews to treat patients.

So I certainly don't want that to happen here either. Apart from anything else it's a risk for infection control - film crews shouldn't be there.

If people don't grasp the seriousness of it by seeing the daily figures, hearing about the people who have died then watching people they don't know in a hospital won't change their behaviour.

cdtaylornats · 06/04/2020 10:12

We are in lockdown. A TV crew dragging itself round a hospital to feed your voyeurism is not a necessity.

mumwon · 06/04/2020 10:15

@NotEverythingIsBlackandwhite the other point of emptying beds is the number of patients who went in for operations or medical treatment contracted corona & its a case of having potential resources for emergency or corona overflow

negomi90 · 06/04/2020 10:22

We do film in hospitals in this country. One born every minute, Hospital and 24 hours in A&E are examples. However they're done with consent from patients and families. I have no doubt we will get documentaries with real footage but not for a few months once consent has been sorted.

slartibarti · 06/04/2020 10:34

I think the majority of UK people know how serious the situation is. We don't need to see pictures.
What would be the point showing patients suffering and staff trying to cope?

DuLANGDuLANGDuLANG · 06/04/2020 10:41

I don’t think we’ll get any footage inside NHS hospitals, not officially shot anyway. The Italian footage was seen as necessary to warn the rest of Europe to take it seriously, it was arranged by one of the mayors who locked down their cities before the government made it a nationwide policy.

This is an excellent interview with a consultant intensivist outside the Welsh hospital where he works (Royal Gwent, Newport).

Both Channel 4 and Sky have put out some really good interviews with medics in various counties.

Sirzy · 06/04/2020 10:48

I doubt there will ever be any footage and rightly so. With current restrictions in place then letting a tv crew in would be highly irresponsible

GCAcademic · 06/04/2020 10:51

There were loads of TV footage from various world media in Italian hospitals.

There was a programme on last night about CV-19 in Italy. They showed the lengths the mayor of Bergamot had to go to get permission for the British TV crew to have access to a Covid ward. Many, many phone calls and perseverence following initial refusals. It was only permitted in the end because it was believed that the programme would have some benefit in warning the British government and public what to expect if they didn't change course.

Mummyoflittledragon · 06/04/2020 10:54

The Sky documentary in Italy will have been taken shortly before publication, which from a quick google hit the press on 20th March. This was shortly before lock down was announced. Was it the media telling us and raising pressure on the government to lock down or the government asking for it to be published to ready the public? Idk. The latter is not likely imo due to timings. However, it is hopefully useful now

I don’t think we will see Uk patients in this way. Moreover, people would be horrified to see their loved one. I read on another thread it’s so as not to alarm the british public. I agree it does this whilst simultaneously trying to get us to comply with the new rules.

gingercat02 · 06/04/2020 10:54

As a hospital worker the last thing we need in the middle of a pandemic is tv crews traipsing around getting in the way and bringing more germs in with them. There have been lots of frontline staff on tv via various web links but we are a bit busy!

VeganCow · 06/04/2020 17:58

Would you want to be filmed while poorly in a hospital bed?!

DuLANGDuLANGDuLANG · 06/04/2020 21:05

I’ve not watched this yet. Published on the BBC website within the last few hours.

Ormally · 06/04/2020 21:31

Where's the PPE for people that would render them able to enter and film any footage....or, wait, come to that, for the actual front line people treating and caring for admissions?

HoffiCoffi13 · 06/04/2020 21:33

Exactly Ormally! People are ignoring the fact that there isn’t adequate PPE for the actual frontline workers, let alone a bloody camera crew.

baublegirl454 · 06/04/2020 22:13

On the 10pm BBC news, now!

justoffshift · 06/04/2020 22:33

There's a 6 minute film on bbc website inside UCLH ICU today

I lived in Spain in the 90s and I noticed their news reports were very graphic Northernsoul. I can still remember seeing on the Spanish news the footage of a stampede at a football match in Guatemala. You could see everything and in my minds eye I can still see the images and it was around 25 years ago. Hideous.
