Coronavirus critical care data for the UK

crazydiamond222 · 05/04/2020 20:42

I have been reading through the latest UK data available here:
t.co/mdq8GhRQEV?amp=1

A few things stand out

  1. For patients admitted to critical care the survival rate is 50%
  2. Gender makes a huge difference to admissions 73% of patients are male
  3. BMI makes quite a big difference to admissions 73% have a bmi over 25
  4. The % of admissions with other severe comorbitities is low
  5. For those admitted the biggest impact on survival rates is age with 32% over 70s surviving compared to 76% of 16-24s

Bmi doesn't seem significant (it is the same % as the population) but perhaps ethnicity is? It seems to affect black (not asian or white) groups disproportionately. Interesting data.

Wow don't think I should have read that!
Awful. They are losing 50% which I knew. But why when other countries arent?
Is it because they aren't trying the drugs?
And as you say the vast majority actually have no underlying health issues....,,

Also it's all very well gov thinking oh well we still have capacity but it's because they are all dying!
Do they need to start admitting them earlier so they don't get so bad

TestBank · 05/04/2020 21:27

That matches what they say about Germany's success so far - younger patients (the skiers who brought it back from Italy I guess) - makes sense looking at the survival stats

Keepdistance · 05/04/2020 21:27

China had 85% of over 70s survive.

TestBank · 05/04/2020 21:32

That's the overall survival rate isn't it though? Same as everywhere else more or less for the over 80s (Italy lower as so many were over 90, so I am guessing that makes a difference)
This is icu survival rates

TestBank · 05/04/2020 21:33

I don't know tbh, happy to be corrected though (altho am massively dubious about China's data it has to be said)

I listened to a young Chinese student on the radio a few weeks ago. As soon as he presented to the hospital with symptoms he was given HIV anti-Virals and I think antibiotics. He was unwell for a while but survived.

This is data for ICU, where only the sickest patients go, so the survival rate is already going to be lower than the overall rate. Also, it's useful to read the last page, which explains what 'basic' and 'advanced' respiratory support means - there is a lot of respiratory support that still falls into the 'basic' category and advanced respiratory support is really, really advanced.

It's also worth bearing in mind that someone can be really very sick and still not quite tick the ICNARC boxes (I was an ICNARC nurse until very recently). The categories are very strict to give rigorous data. The 'severe co-morbidities' categories are really severe, so a patient can have quite advanced respiratory or cardiovascular disease and still not meet the criteria for having 'severe respiratory disorder' or 'severe cardiac disorder'.

A lot of people who are still insisting it’s ‘old people who would have died in the next year anyway’ need to take a look at that.

As well as the ones saying it’s ‘fatties’ need to take a look too.

Thanks for posting.
