Isolation after hospital discharge

My parents are both in their 70's and in the shielded category due to chronic illnesses. DM badly broke her leg in a fall at home yesterday and has been operated on in hospital. My DF wants to look after her when she comes out of hospital, but I'm worried if DM gets infected in hospital then he might catch the virus - there have been a lot of covid deaths where she is being treated. He has a lung condition so he is particularly at risk.

Any ideas what we should do?

Speak to the consultant/sister of the ward and raise your concerns about your dad.
You will have to be forceful though, but obviously polite, also it depends what part of the leg she’s broke ?
As my mil broke her femur and was in hospital/rehabilitation for 3/4 mths

But I’d definitely speak up

obviously being physically in a hospital puts her at higher risk than being at home but all hospitals have a green and red route through the front door meaning that if there was no reason to suspect your mum was Covid positive, she will have gone a different route through a&e and the ortho wards would be considered covid free. If any of their patients spike a temp or start coughing they will be isolated and swabbed until they have their Covid status confirmed. What I am saying is that she will be low risk of catching it and safest place for her will be home. Maybe she and your dad could wear face masks for a couple of weeks at home when in close proximity to each other just to be cautious.

Thanks for the replies, that's reassuring to hear that just being in hospital doesn't necessarily make it high risk. She should be out later in the week. Is it still a requirement to be able to go up and down steps on crutches before discharge? I will speak to the medical staff and talk to my dad about masks. Thanks again.
