Are people seriously 'boycotting' China?

I have seen a fair few posts on Facebook of people complaining that we have ventilators arriving from China (the article quoted only says 300) - stating that it's disgusting and stupidity from the Government..... as if these ventilators are going to arrived doused in covid-19?!!

Fair few people and posters on here have also mentioned 'boycotting' items from China from now on.... erm wouldn't that mean trashing 80% of the contents of your home?!

Are they stating this from their iphones? Hmm

justanotherneighinparadise · 05/04/2020 13:37

We cannot boycott all items but we sure as hell not buy all the unnecessary land fill shit that pours out of China. That would be an excellent result for the environment.

ArriettyJones · 05/04/2020 13:39

Well we SHOULD be boycotting China because of the murder for organs scandal they are perpetrating against minorities and dissenters.

So if the facebook idiots are suggesting the right thing for the wrong reason, then good. I hope they crack in and nobody talks them out of it.

It’s about time something positive came out of FB.

Snowflakes1122 · 05/04/2020 13:40

You know, they treat their workers in factories horrifically-perhaps we shouldn’t be supporting that?

TeaAddict235 · 05/04/2020 13:41

No more than anyone is boycotting the UK/ US/ Germany/France .... for their dealings in the Arms trade. Did you know that our country traded in Arms? The same weapons used in Syria and Afghanistan to name but a few.

LegoBloodyHurts · 05/04/2020 13:42

Why would you want to support a regime like China that has such appalling human rights.

Maybe you like sweatshops, OP? Confused

MayTheGodsBeEverInYourFavour · 05/04/2020 13:42

If people would do this, that would be great. It would also be pretty good if people remembered that it’s not just China that has caused problems with unsafe animal practices. BSE, for example.

flameprincess · 05/04/2020 13:42

Haha @CalleighDoodle good point!

Factories in China are only producing what the rest of the world wants to buy. You need to look closer to home for the culprits justanother. And before anyone starts going on about animal welfare, there is a lot of poor animal welfare here too, on a systemic basis even.

Insaneinthemembury · 05/04/2020 13:45

I run a business and dont use china anymore. Based on a wide array of issues but mainly around knowing goods are from sustainable sources without animal cruelty and human rights abuse. It's not outrageous to boycott such a regime.

ShanghaiDiva · 05/04/2020 13:46

Yes, we are the ones buying all this crap including lovely, shiny new iPhones.

flameprincess · 05/04/2020 13:47

I wasn't saying I actively support them, no need to put words in my mouth.... but just glancing through simple items in my bathroom even - some hygiene products are packaged in bottles made in china. My computer has parts manufactured there. How reasonably could you boycott them?

Also I certainly wouldn't turn down a much needed ventilator for someone who was in need of it just because of where it was manufactured. Imports from there aren't 'contaminated' like the FB posts are suggesting.

@charlestonchaplin part of my buisness is skin care and it is MANDATORY it's tested on animals in China.
I even had a lawyer look into it as I thought that couldnt be right. UK standards are far higher and animal testing for skin care is illegal. So actually the UK is much better in this regard.

charlestonchaplin · 05/04/2020 13:48

That’s the cost of cheap goods, Snowflakes. The cheap goods we happily consume.

GrumpyHoonMain · 05/04/2020 13:49

There is a lot of anti-China sentiment coming from India (particularly the Indian manufacturing industry) at the moment - so many of the posts slating the British ordering of Chinese ventilators you see on social media aren’t from Brits at all. Be careful what you read!

ShanghaiDiva · 05/04/2020 13:51

Boycotting goods manufactured in China is nearly impossible. My dh’s factory manufactures fibre that goes into tampons, masks etc all made in China and then on to other factories. Where do you draw a line in boycotting products?

Snowflakes1122 · 05/04/2020 13:53

It won’t change without a boycott though, will it? charlestonchaplin It’s wrong, and maybe now is the time to stop supporting a country willing to treat its people like this?

Muminabun · 05/04/2020 13:53

China is a major trading partner but due to the risk from regular and very serious pandemics originating from China I think it would be pragmatic if countries were less reliant on them for goods. I think that this is already happening and China’s economy will take a hit as a result of not just cv but sars and bird flu etc. Do these outbreaks make them too unstable and unreliable as a trading partner purely from an economic point of view?

MayTheGodsBeEverInYourFavour · 05/04/2020 13:59

Yes, we are the ones buying all this crap including lovely, shiny new iPhones.

Speak for yourself indeed.

I’d never heard of the organ harvesting thing before. That’s horrifying. It’s no wonder they feel it’s ok to treat animals so badly, they seem to treat their citizens little better.

charlestonchaplin · 05/04/2020 14:04

Companies can choose to produce their skin care products elsewhere. If it’s important to their customers they would do so and market their products to highlight this. The truth is, for many customers price is more of a concern than animal welfare.

When we stop using animals for our entertainment, putting them at risk of injuries, including injuries that lead to them being killed, maybe we can start getting self-righteous. Many retired racehorses and greyhound dogs don’t find homes and end up being killed. And it’s not that long since fox hunting was banned. Many would like to see it reinstated. (If foxes are a real problem they should be culled humanely. Fox-hunting is obviously more about tradition than about vermin control. Even the idea that foxes are a problem is looking at things from the human point of view, as if we have some sort of moral right to organise everything in the world to suit us.)

Wonder where the phones they are typing on are made?

Ridiculous
