If exercise rules are tightened ....

Looks like the rules will be tightened because of the mindless idiots who cannot stay at home as they have been instructed to.

My question is this - what on earth are we going to do about our dogs? They have to be exercised and they need to do their business outdoors so what will happen?

we couldn't even keep our collie on a lead after he was neutered as he went crazy...

Is that not a dog training issue? Unless I have misunderstood?

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 05/04/2020 11:49

Nobody's saying children are less important than dogs, there is a question of adaptability however.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 05/04/2020 11:49

@Olivehater - children can go to the loo indoors, dogs cannot.

Maybe a £3000 fine and 6 months in prison would motivate people like Lumisade, because that what happens in France if you break the rules 3 times (max 1hr, once a day, within 1km of you home, one adult at a time). Automatic fine if caught outside after curfew (10pm to 5am in most places).

Mascotte · 05/04/2020 11:53

suggesting meditation/yoga to people with mental health problems is rarely helpful.

Tolleshunt · 05/04/2020 11:55

Eh Mascot? Not sure where you’re getting that from. It’s official advice, and very helpful for many. Granted, it doesn’t help everybody (show me a medical intervention that does), but it helps many a lot. There are also lots of other ways to increase resilience which Lumisade and others who are struggling can also use.

Floatyboat · 05/04/2020 11:58

Dogs can go to the toilet in a garden. You shouldn't have a dog if you don't have a garden.

Lots of children live in cramped flats without gardens.

Typical minority of crazy dog people prioritising the welfare of a pet over a human.

eaglejulesk · 05/04/2020 12:00

For me it is necessary. I need to exercise, it's really important for pregnancy and my dog needs to exercise. We aren't in the middle of a city, we wouldn't affect anyone else.

Okay - new rule: you can go out for a walk with your dog, but no-one else in the whole country is allowed to. Satisfied?

It doesn't work like that, does it? Your needs are actually no more important than anyone else's.

Honeyroar · 05/04/2020 12:02

I think they could find a middle ground by issuing reasonably hefty fines to people caught sitting on park benches or beaches, or those parked at beauty spots.

UYScuti · 05/04/2020 12:03

I'm prepared to make sacrifices for the well-being of people, but am I supposed to make sacrifices for the well-being of dogs😳
Dogs are just other people's hobbies

alloutoffucks · 05/04/2020 12:04

Nobody NEEDS to go out to exercise, you want to go out to exercise. I understand that. I regularly do walks in lovely surroundings and doing an exercise routine in a small living room is not the same. But I know that I don't NEED to go long walks.

Circletime27 · 05/04/2020 12:04

Floatyboat it’s not just about the dog going to the toilet, it’s about giving the exercise that many breeds need. Our dog will become destructive without a walk each day. My children won’t. It’s also not about putting dogs before humans. It’s perfectly possible to walk a dog without any risk to any other person. You keep it on the lead, you keep your distance from others, you keep the walk to an hour maximum.

Circletime27 · 05/04/2020 12:05

UYScuti what sacrifices are you making for dogs?

LochJessMonster · 05/04/2020 12:05

Ok, Lumisade can go for her precious walk because she is the only person pregnant and with a dog in the entire country.
BUT if she catches CV or passes it on to her baby or one of her friends or family they aren’t allowed any sort of treatment. Because that’s the risk she took when she decided she was the exception. Fair?

That’s why lockdown isn’t working, because selfish people always think they are the exception. Except when everyone thinks they are the exception, mass infection and deaths happens.

Why would you risk your baby’s health for a walk? Pretend that your dog has just had cruciate surgery and can’t walk. Do indoor activities, mental stimulation. You’d manage then.

alloutoffucks · 05/04/2020 12:06

And personally I think collies are working dogs and no one should be having them as a pet anyway. But if you do and are not allowed to walk it, then you need to look at alternatives inside. And yes plenty of owners already have to do this for dogs that are convalescing and not allowed to be very active. Of course it is much harder than taking them for a walk, but you can manage it.

Overtime2019 · 05/04/2020 12:06

In Edinburgh where I am all park have been closed for two weeks now and because of stupid people heading to the beach there's police there now telling them to get home it does seem to. Be working where I am as its so so quite with hardly any cars but you still get stupid people hanging around flats

alloutoffucks · 05/04/2020 12:08

And I agree that everyone has a "reason" why the rules do not apply to them.

Circletime27 · 05/04/2020 12:09

I don’t understand why there’s this issue over people walking their dogs? The ones causing problems are those congregating in parks, sunbathing in groups, attending 18th birthday parties.

Wehttam · 05/04/2020 12:11

We were never going to be able to be compliant with a fairly broad loose lockdown were we? The views on here clearly show that people are invincible and immune to any restrictions. This is why we will go to step 2 of lockdown, with stronger restrictions and bigger penalties .

Rebootingagain · 05/04/2020 12:12

You will have to manage the same as they have in France, Spain, Italy, India...

Strict lockdowns, permits to go out.

We been stuck in the house with no visitors for 14 days now as it comes under law here and we were showing symptoms. Police are checking if people’s journeys are necessary, so the dog hasn’t had his usual daily walk for two weeks.

We play with him more in the house and in the garden, like they also in other countries where people have taken the kids and they have had to go full on nanny state because people can’t be trusted to use common sense.

QuixoticQuokka · 05/04/2020 12:16

It’s perfectly possible to walk a dog without any risk to any other person. Same for children, you can hold the hand of a young child or use a harness if need be. My teenager walks with me, his weekly martial arts class is obviously cancelled, he needs exercise as much as any dog but can't be bribed to do what he doesn't want to do.

Notwiththeseknees · 05/04/2020 12:17

Sadly, there are a lot of Lumisades about. They are so special, their situation unique, they are really sensible, won't touch anything, maintain the distance. Then 3 days later "How the fuck did I get Covid-19? I followed ALL the rules"

Circletime27 · 05/04/2020 12:21

QuixoticQuokka yes I couldn’t agree more!

QuixoticQuokka · 05/04/2020 12:22

Just to add, we would cope if we had to, I just don't think there should be one rule for dog owners and another for everyone else.

UYScuti · 05/04/2020 12:22

It's perfectly possible to walk a dog without any risk
I agree one dog on a short lead no problem, if you walk at a fast pace that should give the dog adequate exercise.
The more common scenario is a person who instead of walking at a fast pace with a dog has a flock of 'high energy' dogs on extendable leads or no leads at all.
Or the person engrossed in their mobile phone accompanied by various dogs milling around pleasing themselves.
Or person on a bicycle walking a dog on an extendable lead.
